The Commanders bolstered their defensive line depth Thursday, selecting Kentucky defensive end Jeremy Jarmon in the third round of the NFL's supplemental draft.

Washington, never known to hold on to future picks too tightly, will give up their 2010 third round pick for the right to select Jarmon.

Jarmon would have been a senior, but was suspended for testing positive for a banned substance. He has ideal pro size and could be a good run stopper.

Washington is thin at defensive end, so Jarmon could compete for significant snaps right away. Playing alongside Albert Haynesworth certainly won't hurt Jarmon's chances for making an immediate impact.

Jarmon is the first player selected in this year's supplemental draft and potentially could be the last. Deon Murphy from Kansas State looks like the next most likely to be taken.

Many scouts had him going in the third. For just one example, see this:

Awesome ....... rolling a 3rd rounder for a drug user.

Thank God for Dan Snyder (or Xenu in little Danny's case)

Snyder: "Would this be a sexy pick?"

Cerrato: "Yes it would."

Snyder: "Take him."

Other than the substance issue, is the guy a viable prospect?

ExtremeHomers is very excited by this move.

Even though it was a Cerrato/Snyder pick, I am actually pretty excited about this move -- I can understand the judgments though.

How is this different then taking this kid (with an additional year of experience) in the 3rd round of this 2010 draft?

he's pretty legit, 13.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 23.5 TFL last 2 years

he's on the short end though for a DE

Art must have given it his blessing.

:muttley:

I bet he couldn't beat Art in an arm-wrestling contest, though.

And WG, he is a pretty good prospect, but it's just funny how the Skins send a whole crew to his workout, then Vinny talks him up in the press, and then they actually take him. It's so obvious when they fall in love with a player.

Like always, it's great now because it feels like a free draft pick. But the next April always comes around faster than you think.

He was a talented kid.

Has not played in over a year.

Most people thought he would be picked up in the 5-6th round (because of the steroids thing).

 he played last year and racked up 10 TFL, 4 sacks and 2 forced fumbles

Here's the scouting report per Draft Countdown (http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/SuppDraft/Supplemental-Draft.php):

Strengths:
Excellent bulk...Reliable tackler...Active with a terrific motor...Is stout at the point of attack...Does a nice job against the run...Solid technician...Shows the ability to get off blocks...Plays with good leverage...Knocks down a lot of passes at the line...Smart and a hard worker...Good production...Offers some schematic versatility...A lot of experience against top competition.

Weaknesses:
A bit shorter than you would prefer...Needs to get stronger...Not overly quick or explosive...A little stiff...Average agility...Doesn't change directions well...Isn't a top sack artist and repertoire of pass rush moves is limited...Has some minor durability concerns.

Notes:
A three-year starter for the Wildcats...Played a lead role in the UK Theater production of the play "Weak/Side/Help" in 2009...Was named 2nd Team All-SEC by the leagues coaches in 2007...Ranks third in school history when it comes to sacks...Has a history of shoulder injuries...Seriously considered going pro after his junior season and was given a 4th / 5th Round grade...Tested positive for a banned substance (reportedly an over-the-counter dietary supplement) during a random drug test and was ruled ineligible for his senior season...Had already earned a political science degree and decided to enter the NFL's Supplemental Draft...Could play defensive end in either a 4-3 or 3-4 front ... A solid all-around player with top - notch intangibles.

Thought he had not played since 2007.

My bad.

That post is full of fail.

First, he was projected as high as the second round, but PFW stated he was a likely 3rd round candidate.

Second, he played for three full seasons before being ruled ineligible for the 2009 season.

He also wasn't a "drug user" but rather was sanctioned for using a diuretic supplement.
