I hate the Commanders, it is part of my beliefs as a Cowboy fan to hate them more than any other team (by far)...if they changed the name, they wouldn't be the Commanders any more....it's like the browns becoming the ravens....there would be an asterisk next to all of the ***-whoopin's....Commander losses vs big baby losses

leave the name alone

And that is supposed to trump the fact that the word is extremely painful to a significant number of Native Americans and is defined in every dictionary as a racial slur?

ok, so we are going there

why didn't these people come out in the 70's, 80's, 90's, etc???? if it REALLY bothered them, then this should have been on the table a LONG time ago....please, this isn't something new...changing a name doesn't change someone's heritage, background or beliefs....

I'm getting seriously sick of hearing about the Commanders controversy. The name, in all likelihood, is going to eventually have to be changed. Just cut the crap and do it already.

I love hating the Commanders as much as anyone, but if the name bothers native americans... then it is eventually going to be changed... so do it already and get it over with.

I cant find a dictionary that defines it as such. I googled "define Commander" and searched through the first 5 entries. They say things like "usually offensive" which to me indicates that intent is what makes the term offensive rather than the term itself being inherently offensive.

I don't think it is that big of a deal to change the name. They've changed the name in the past;

Suggestions:
The Fighting First Americans
The Fighting Natives
The Commanders (keep the name), but instead of the current logo, make it a flying red potato.

I actually don't care, but I think they should use the flying red potato myself.

A dictionary? Really?

Who cares why and by the way, Native Americans have been trying to get the name changed since the 70's. It just wasn't major news and they weren't nearly as organized and well funded as they are now. Who is talking about changing their heritage? They simply no longer want to be bombarded with a word they view as hurtful and racist while a large group of people dress up and act out in a way they view as disrespectful to their ancestors who suffered greatly at hands of those very people's ancestors. How about I turn your great grandfather into a team mascot and exaggerate some aspect of his persona for my personal amusement? I doubt you would find that enjoyable, especially if I got a stadium full of 80,000 others to follow suit.

first, I don't want anything to be offensive to any groups (seriously), but if the name of the team in Washington changes, then they need to change Braves, Indians, etc in other sports...it's all of nothing...

not the same thing (at all), but I am Irish and a staunch Notre Dame fan...their mascot is a pissed off little dude running around in a stupid little outfit like he is ready to fight someone at the end of the rainbow...I wouldn't change a thing

Excuse me. I guess its perfectly fine for team names to be "usually offensive" or "disparaging" or "insulting". I've got a newsflash for you. It's defined as those words because it is so widely viewed as racist. Please tell me you didn't need me to point that out to you.
