Using a dictionary to determine racism is like staring into the horizon to determine if the world is flat.
I agree entirely. But that has nothing to do with anything ive said in this thread. At some point, maybe you will realize that you dont know what youre arguing about.

not the same thing (at all), but I am Irish and a staunch Notre Dame fan...their mascot is a pissed off little dude running around in a stupid little outfit like he is ready to fight someone at the end of the rainbow...I wouldn't change a thing

"Fighting Irish" is not racist. "Commander" is. See the difference genius. Call them the Warriors or Braves and no one even entertains the argument.

Excuse me. I guess its perfectly fine for team names to be "usually offensive" or "disparaging" or "insulting". I've got a newsflash for you. It's defined as those words because it is so widely viewed as racist. Please tell me you didn't need me to point that out to you.

When did i argue that it wasnt racist? I have not expressed my opinion on the name. I just saw a blatant fabrication in your post and pointed it out. I have no idea why you would make something like that up when popular opinion is already on your side and popular opinion is all that matters in a case like this.

Dictionaries follow the current vernacular. When a word reaches the point that dictionaries define it as offensive, disparaging, and racist, I think its safe to say the word should no longer be used as a team mascot.

I think "Cowboy" is an offensive word, they should change it to "Cowpeople" in my opinion.

ok, so we are going there

why didn't these people come out in the 70's, 80's, 90's, etc???? if it REALLY bothered them, then this should have been on the table a LONG time ago....please, this isn't something new...changing a name doesn't change someone's heritage, background or beliefs....

Maybe they did, but couldn't get the press coverage.

first, I don't want anything to be offensive to any groups (seriously), but if the name of the team in Washington changes, then they need to change Braves, Indians, etc in other sports...it's all of nothing...

The word 'skin' is offensive.

awe, you mad bro? I stated my opinion and I don't believe it to be racist or negative in connotation....if you feel this strongly, would the chiefs also need to change their name? Isn't the "chief" the person in charge? but, if you get upset with Commander, then you had better take offense to chief, brave, indian, etc....

He put in your heart certain wishes and plans, in my heart he put other and different desires. Each man is good in his sight. It is not necessary for Eagles to be Crows. We are poor... but we are free. No white man controls our footsteps. If we must die...we die defending our rights." – Sitting Bull

I can guarantee you it wouldn't .
Commander is simply not an offensive term. This was a self created controversy by a bunch of politically correct bed wetters that want to infringe their beliefs on society .

I'll guarantee you if you walked up to any player from the other 31 teams and called him a Commander, he'd be offended.

This. There were only a handful of networks during the 70's and 80's and only a few hours of the day was spent on covering the news. The 90's gave birth to the internet (the internet we know today as used by the masses) and startup cable networks that offered more venues for news programming. But still, the new mediums were in its infancy. It's a totally different ballgame now as to how news gets picked up and is covered.

Anyone see last week's South Park? Deals with the Commander name, Snyder, the NFL, Goodell, Jerry Jones and Kickstarter.

Instant classic if you're a South Park fan.

The first national protest was in 1988......

I don't think it is that big of a deal to change the name. They've changed the name in the past;

Suggestions:
The Fighting First Americans
The Fighting Natives
The Commanders (keep the name), but instead of the current logo, make it a flying red potato.

I actually don't care, but I think they should use the flying red potato myself.

The Washington Warriors.....very simple and allows them to keep the logo if they choose.

Like i said, i live right next to a reservation, anybody who would call one of them a Commander would get knocked out.

Can't speak for others, but they do not like it...and that's a fact.

I can guarantee you that I would not get knocked out. Commanders is a complimentary term used to express an Indian warrior.
