Commanders Sign Vincent, Release Burns
By Gary Fitzgerald

October 16, 2006

The Commanders have added a veteran presence to the secondary with the signing of defensive back Troy Vincent on Monday.

Vincent is a 15-year NFL veteran who played with the Buffalo Bills last season. He was coached by Commanders secondary-cornerbacks coach Jerry Gray, who was the Bills' defensive coordinator in 2005.

A four-time Pro Bowler, Vincent produced a strong season last year, logging a career-high 102 tackles and four interceptions in 16 starts.

Vincent spent the 2006 preseason with Buffalo, but suffered a hamstring injury in training camp that forced the Bills to place him on injured reserve, ending his season.

Last week, the Bills released Vincent upon his request.

"I'm ready to go," he told the Associated Press last week. "To be fair, it was the right time for me. Now's the time for me look at where I'm at. And I still want to play some football."

If Vincent is active for this Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts, it will be his 200th career NFL game.

Vincent was a first-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in 1992. He played four seasons with the Dolphins before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent in 1996. He played eight seasons with the Eagles before signing with the Bills in 2004.

With 47 career interceptions, Vincent ranks first among active players in that category.

He has played cornerback most of his career, but in Buffalo he made the transition to free safety.

The Commanders are expected to use him in nickel packages at safety, and possibly at cornerback. To make room for Vincent, the team released safety Curry Burns.

Vincent, 35, also serves as the NFL Players Association president. The 6-3, 200-pounder played his college ball at Wisconsin. He is a native of Fallingstown, Pa.

What idiots the Commanders are. Didn't Troy Vincent's release have something to do with an past injury? :lmao2:

I wonder if this move is because of Rogers broken finger or the fact that Adam A is playing pretty bad. I can't believe that they spent all that Money and then would bench him for a 15 year player.

It is also being reported that although Troy Vincent was released, the Commanders have agreed to give Buffalo their 2007 1st round pick and a 2008 2nd round pick for good measure.

Troy has also agreed to the 6 year 30 million dollar contract and $10 million signing bonus.

Well...actually I am kidding. But come on it is the Commanders, making fun at their expense is always a good thing.

It was reported as early as last week that they were interested

Think it has more to do with the 1st and 4th round picks the Bills spent on safeties

It appears they need help with Rumph and Wright back there.

Not sure how much he will help as a CB because I doubt they play him at S with Arch and Taylor. I also doubt they signed him just for depth at saftey.

Like the Commanders have a 2nd round pick. I think they only have picks in rounds 1,5, & 7. That's it. :lmao2:

A fan does. His name is Daniel Snyder and he is a fanatical Commander fan.

I read this on that site:

"Except for family and very close friends, he prefers to be called Mr. Snyder rather than Daniel."

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that. I call all my clients and aquaintances by their last name unless they ask me not to. It's respectful.

It makes me laugh because someone put it on his Wikipedia - which means that he probably asked someone to call him that.

It's like if fans ran a team.
That is the most accurate assessment of this that I have ever seen. Essentially that's what Napoleon Snyder is and why he bought the team.

It cracks me up. Like, when guys like Vincent are released, I know there's gonna be a thread on here, wondering if the Cowboys should pick them up. Except, Snyder actually acts on this. But, as we've been told many times, Gibbs is in full control. Maybe this one snuck by him. The Chase for the Cup is in full swing, his interests are all over the board, right? He can't be blamed if his team went and picked up an older, worse Adam Archuletta for no apparent reason.

I think it's a pretty good move. They obviously need secondary help, and having Vincent there won't hurt.
