Commanders | Team remains over the salary cap

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Washington Commanders are one of four teams over the new salary cap limit. The Commanders are about $7 million over the cap.

Of course they won't do all that's described in that article. I predict they'll be about 7-10 MM under. Thats just enough to fill the roster out. *NOT* enough to make any significant acquisitions. They couldn't possibly afford any sort of bidding war. It's not cap hell, but with a team with so many holes, its not cap heaven.

Bear in mind that those estimates of the Skins' cap room do not take into account the re-signing of any of their own free agents, or money to pay their draft picks, or money to fund a practice squad... figuring that they want to retain the services of guys like Ryan Clark and Robert Royal, combined with the money for their rookie pool, and the money to fund a practice squad, you can project that will take another 7 mil or more of cap room...

Cap hell sucks ***:laugh2:

The restructures are simple, convert salary to bonuses (give the players the money upfront which is why the would cooperate) and spread that bonus over the life of the contract

Some of them are automatically placed in there. The Commanders will make the moves they want to make and will not be hamstrung by the cap at all. Raymer, Bowen, Harris, Noble, Tupa will still be realsed to make room for new and younger guys, and the team will have a chance to add depth

Curse this cap hell! :bang2:

Which just pushes the financial commitment further into the future... apparently, you Skins fans think that this is a practice that can be continued indefinitely, that the price tag will never come due...

This is one you cant win silverbear.

What will the media say next ? 2012 ? Then all of a sudden the option of uncapped or major increase in cap ?

I am not sold on this cap hell that the Cowboys, 49ers, and Titans have experienced.

I'm hoping they go after a D-linemen and maybe a LB.

None of the WR's out there make me think they are that much better than ones in the draft (for the cost).

That's why I'm happy you aren't the GM.

You guys could really use a good DE out there.

Again, why are we so cought up in Washington's cap?

LOL... you keep telling yourself that, son... I guess you figure the Skins will just write off all those bonuses they're gonna convert this offseason, that they'll never have that money count against the cap...

I'll grant you that the Skins have done a fine job of pushing the hit into the future, but they WERE headed into cap heck in recent years, it took a new CBA to bail them out...

They had little cap room to work with last year, which is the ONLY reason they weren't major players in free agency (in spite of all you Skins fans tryin' to tell me that Danny Boy had suddenly discovered fiscal responsibility), and you would have to make some major, major moves to get under the cap this year too, but for the new CBA...

The CBA bought y'all a couple-three years respite, it's true, but you're still not in an enviable cap position, either this year or on down the line...

I am not sold on this cap hell that the Cowboys, 49ers, and Titans have experienced.

This suggests that you think that Danny Boy is somehow smarter than the architects of those teams... well, if that's true (and I think it's a completely ridiculous argument), how do you explain that Snyder hasn't been able to duplicate those teams' success on the field?? The Boys, Niners and Titans all had their Super Bowl appearances before cap hell did them in...

Face, it the Skins dodged a bullet this week...

quick pop quiz:

how many playoff games have the Commanders won since 1996?
how many playoff games have the cowboys won since 1996?

note: dan snyder took over the Commanders in 1999....

None of which is relevant to the cap situation of the Skins, and the likelihood (or unlikelihood, depending on your perspective) of their ever finding themselves in "cap hell"...

My point was that the teams that went into "cap hell" did so only after achieving a measure of success that the Skins have yet to duplicate... part of the reason for the Cowboys' lack of playoff success in recent years is the "cap hell" they had to go through...

Seems like every time I get into a factual debate with you Skins fans, you go draggin' in all kinds of non sequiturs...

But hey, I guess you're real proud of Danny Boy's two playoff appearances in seven years... especially when he's spent money like nobody in the history of the league ever has...

ROTFLMAO...

Once again, some fans have laughed prematurely. Looks like the Commanders will have upwards of 15 million in free money this year...whatever they are doing seems to continue working for them.

Not sure why everyone is so concerned with the Commanders.

If Dallas takes care of business, the Skin's don't matter. Besides...let little Danny Boy spend all the cash he wants. It's worked so well till now hasn't it.

local radio here in the Distric is reporting they still have to shave $7 - 9$MM of the cap. Maybe this post is a tad bit premature.

hey just wondering here, but does a team HAVE to feild a 53 man roster or can they say only feild a 50 man roster if they were in cap trouble? I am not suggesting any team is in that situation, just asking for personal knowledge.

I think the CBA says they have to have 53 players on payroll

10-15 million BEFORE they do anything with their own; before the draft.
Even without a first rd pick that is still going to soak up 2-3 million.
realistically they will probably have at most 5-7 million to actually SHOP.
that is not much.

ok, I don't know what local radio some people are listening. But I can say two things.

#1. They are not double digits UNDER the cap. Not right now.
#2. They aren't 7mil over either. That's before the guys like Raymer, Bowen and Harris are let got.

They had around a dozen guys, mostly starters willing to restructure before the CBA agreement. Since they don't need that sort of room. They have a different restructure plan in place to go with the new deal.

Safe money says that without the rookie pool, they are somewhere are 6 to 10 mil under.

Feels like I've been coming here for the most up to date Skins news lately. ;)

The great thing is, that they don't need to do a ton of shopping. Just a couple of free agents really, and then depth.

6 to 10 MM sounds about right. Looking at the link posted last night thats certainly doable. Of course they could get lower, but that would include some ill-advised moves. 6-10 is about where everyone predicted they would be with a new CBA. Without it they would have been...you know. That would have been fun to watch. Still its a very poor position to be in. Great cap management guys. I think the idea is to improve your team, not squeeze by with mediocre talent.

Also, minimum salaries went up $40K across the board. Not much if you tend to pay above minimum salaries, but if you're a team that has a lot of "cash over cap" contracts (see Commanders), this is going to eat into the extra $7M of cap space the CBA just granted. For example, 40 players getting a $40K raise equals $1.6M of cap room eaten up.

enough talent to get to the 2nd round of the playoffs.

If we were overhauling the team, and adding a mess of FA's. It would mean we've got a ways to go before contending.
