Commanders Team Name Under Attack Again

Good grief, you have put me in the precarious position of defending little Danny Snyder. Danny did not name the Skins. There is a long tradition in the name. The team was not named to offend "Native Americans" but to honor them. If some find the name offensive then they are just being silly. The first sentence of your post is so stupid it doesn't even deserve a response.

He owns the team and it is up to him what that team should be called. Snyder is despicable, and this proves it.

Anyhow, that seems like a bizarre way to honor Native Americans.

So if some ranch hands start saying they are offended by the Jerry Jones calling his football team the "Cowboys" then he should change the name?

Yeah us white people shouldn't have to be bothered with the petty feelings of minorities. If we want to treat them like trash they should man up and deal with it.

Yes. That Washington football club decided to call themselves a name they deem negative.

Complete and utter nonsense. I salute the Commanders for not paying any attention to these whining babies.

Start a Whiteskins team. I'll manage to deal with it.

Absolutely.

Think of the children.

Yes because Whiteskin has the same exact connotation. That response is just intellectually lazy.

It's a skin color.

I'm not about to appease people who use racism as a crutch and look to be offended about something. Anybody with a functioning brain knows the Commanders didn't name themselves that because they view it as a negative term. There is no intent. If people are still offended, like sucks. Get a helmet. And I'd suggest a harness too.

Lol, this whole issue just proves two things for me :

1) people will believe anything that is written by the media as fact. 90% of Native Americans don't find "Commander" offensive, but that doesn't matter....sports media and politicians told you it was offensive so it's better to trust them, right? They would know better than ACTUAL NATIVE AMERICANS.

2) propaganda works. This system never fails:
- Shout something loudly until people listen.
- Someone tells you that your opinion is in fact, historically wrong.
- Ignore this person, and keep shouting your historically wrong information until even more people pay attention. Due to your stubbornness, those who listen start to believe you.
- Someone provides polls proving your statement not only is historically inaccurate, but nothing has changed to make it any more accurate today.
- Keep ignoring anything that doesn't agree with your lies until you get what you want.

Actually, we don't know that at all. The man that named the team "Commanders" was a known racist who refused to sign black players longer than anyone else. I guess it's just a coincidence that he chose the most derogatory name available for Native Americans.

Would you walk up to a Native American you didn't know and call them a Commander? If not, then you shouldn't think it's an appropriate name for a football team either. If you say you would without hesitation, I'll call you a liar.

Why ask me a question where you're basically handing me the answer you want me to say? Lol.

First off, you didn't even respond to my post. I assume it's because you don't have an answer to 90% of Native Americans not being offended by it. Fine, I'm used to the bleeding heart PC crowd ignoring facts.

Frankly, if I felt compelled to say it to them I don't expect there to be any problem. Since the vast majority of them don't have a problem with the word. What your silly question is lacking, is context. Any word can be offensive if you say it in an offensive tone. Most of us are proud to be Americans, but if you went to France and a Frenchman spoke to someone within earshot of you and said," Look at this American!" You would be irritated/annoyed/offended. Words don't offend people, PEOPLE offend people.

But sure, go ahead and ignore all that and keep beating that drum. I'm expecting the next post to compare it to the n-word now.

First off, I don't believe the 90% stat that skins fans throw around but even if that's true, that means 10% of Native Americans are offended by the term. That right there is plenty evidence enough to get rid of the word as a team mascot. My silly question needs no context because there is no situation in which you or anyone else of sound mind would think its appropriate to address a Native American as a Commander, especially one that you don't know. So go ahead and make up some ridiculous situation in which it would be okay to go up to a Native American and say "what's up Commander".

So if 10% of people are offended by the word "cowboy" would you want Jerry jones to change that too? Allow me to take a page from your book, and call you a liar if you disagree with me.

Because everyone who disagrees with you must be a liar, right? You don't even know where Commander came from or what present day Native Americans think of the word( you admitted this above), yet you claim to know what is appropriate to address them as. Your whole logic is based on ridiculous hypotheticals and misconceptions. Do yourself a favor, do some research and stop believing everything you read in today's media.

Google is your friend, use it. I'm done.

So you would have no problem with an expansion team calling themselves the fighting n-words or maybe the fighting k-words?

Anyhow essentially what you are saying it is not the fault of Dan Snyder for offending Native Americans, but it is their own fault for being offended for being treated like trash. That seems like some really crappy logic.

i'm not going to take what we're mad at today and retro-fit that into past history.

our constitution promises life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

not the gaining of happiness.

and certainly the right to never be offended.

associating Commanders to the N word is self serving and crappy logic and the need to invent another reason for the common man to feel guilt over life.

FO.

normally i hate reading your posts. but we agree here. they didn't do this to offend, the offense came at a cause long after the fact. to not understand the franchise history is to be just as guilty of accusing them of racism.

somewhere along the line it got cool to be a victim.

we're letting that get out of hand.

How is it silly? Many Native Americans have said they are offended by the name, as it is a derogatory term for their people.

You're going to tell them what they should and should not be offended by?

lol.. that's the silly part.

the silly part is to argue around topics, not logic.

Surprisingly, the name Commander is not a North American one. Its original meaning had nothing to do with the scalps of Indians. The original name was a European one used to describe Algonquins who painted their face with bright red ocher and bloodroot, thereby making their face red with war paint. Only later on was it implied that the name was derived from a Native American's exposure to the sun or from the scalps of Indians that were paid to cowboys as bounties. Unfortunately, for some reason, perhaps because of our own ignorance, the name is believed to come from the human scalps of Native Americans. However, the original meaning comes from Europe and was used by the Europeans when they arrived in North America, hundreds of years before any reference to any other meaning was used. This is supported by Reader's Digest in its book "AmericasFascinating Indian Heritage" where it is quoted as stating the name Commander was..

the trick is to know what you're talking about before you say something.

So it was used by Europeans originallly to refer to Native Americans by the color of their skin?

Guess i'll start walking around calling African Americans, "blackskins" then..im sure none of them will mind.
