It's how the league is now. Only the really skilled front offices like Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Baltimore and New England can continuously build their roster like this and if you look at the chaos the flacon contract caused the ravens this year you will see it immediately. Think they wouldn't like to have boldin or some of the other players that left.

I agree. That's why I think coaching is important. You should have a proven system (such as what the Patriots have) where you can continue to fill the holes of the roster with cheap rookie contracts while relying on your highly paid veterans at key positions such as QB. Look at the teams that made the playoffs. There were two types of teams. 1) older teams with good coaches, elite veteran QBs, and a bunch of young guys filling in the cracks. 2) younger teams with new coaches, good but not great young QBs, and explosive elite defenses composed of a bunch of guys still on their rookie contracts. The Seahawks, 49ers and Panthers might have 4-5 good years, but teams with QBs like Brady, Peyton, Brees and Rodgers will be in playoff contention every year for 15 years.

Some of you are totally missing the point of the post. Implying that the Seahawks got lucky on a few picks is an incredible disservice to their coaching staff. simply put, they know good value in low risk FA contracts in addition to having done an INCREDIBLE job of drafting these past couple of years. Case in point, most of you point out they cannot keep Brandon Browner, who was on a free agent contract from the CFL. To most seattle fans, it's a foregone conclusion that he's gone (he's 29, one year suspension) and they've actually replaced him with a 6th rounder (not a high 1st rounder) from clemson, Maxwell, and have been better off for it. That comes down to scouting and coaching. Knowing that you can still get valuable rotational players who can be coached up into starters at the back end of the draft and not pissing away picks on a second kicker like David Buehler. *ahem*

2013 Cap Hit
CB Richard Sherman $600,606 (5th rounder)
CB Byron Maxwell $583,363 (6th rounder)
CB Walter Thurmond $612,890 (4th rounder)
S Kam Chancellor $3,878,404 (5th rounder)
S Earl Thomas $2,921,427 (1st rounder)
LB Bobby Wagner $979,045 (2nd rounder)
LB Malcolm Smith $566,475 (7th rounder)
DE/OLB Bruce Irvin $1,936,271 (1st rounder)
DT Tony McDaniel $605,000 (UDFA/acq via FA)
DT Clinton McDonald $592,941 (7th rounder/acq via FA)
DE/OLB Cliff Avril $3,750,000 (short term FA)
TOTAL $17,026,422 81% of total playoff game snaps

all of these guys could have been had by any team. Only ONE (Earl Thomas) was a blue chip draft prospect. You guys act like 'oh, they happened to hit on a bunch of picks and once those rookie deals run, they'll suck'. I'm looking at this list and they would realistically only need to resign Thomas, Sherman, and Wagner. They have bad contracts/older players coming off their books (clemons, bryant, Sidney Rice) . The rest of them can be replaced with again, cheap FA contracts and draft picks because they have a strong enough coaching staff to put JAG in a position to succeed.

Not that this is relevant to the topic...but since it's about the Seahawks, I figured it could somehow be fit into here...

I didn't really care who won this weeks games until i saw this.

When they have to pay up, they'll have new guys coming through the draft with cheap contracts.

I read the whole thread, waiting for someone to say this. Thank you Clove.

All of you in the "BBBBUTTT WAIT IN 2 YEARS THEY'LL BE SCREWED!!" crowd, do not get it. Organizations like the Seahawks will choose 1 or possibly 2 players to pay (I'm guessing Earl Thomas), then find replacements for the rest in the draft. They will not be "screwed" like so many of you are so excited to point out. Same thing goes with San Francisco. Both franchises have a system in place, they have players they will target in the drafts to fit their systems and they will say "bye bye" to the old players when their contracts are up. There will be no Miles Austin contracts on their teams. We are not so blessed unfortunately.

Thank you, you get it too. I'm not sure why so many chose to be ignorant of these points. When Romo becomes involved in a discussion around here things tend to get emotional. Fact is, they will not being paying all of these players, they're going to keep reloading in the draft just like Belicheck and Harbaugh do.
