Comparing the entire Seahawk defense cap number with Romo's

You can selectively pick and choose bargains on any team. A list with Tyron Smith, Frederick, Leary, Murray, T.Williams, etc.. would look great for the Cowboys.

The top 3 defenders for Seattle have a combined cap hit of over 20M.

DE Chris Clemons $8,166,667
DE Red Bryant $7,600,000
DT Brandon Mebane $5,200,000

Total for 3 players: $20,966,667
Red Bryant makes 7.6 mil? Doesn't he only have like 3 career sacks?

Impressive drafting by the Seahawks. Efficient use of salary cap. Building a top defense through the draft and avoiding big contracts. These things are apparently possible.

If I'm Richard Sherman, I'm telling Cliff Avril to buy lunch every damn day.

You're way off on that man, he has 3.5 career sacks.

This doesn't tell me much other than the 'Hawks have done a fantastic job of finding bargains and making wise draft choices lately.
The piper will be paid shortly however, Russell Wilson won't come cheap along with the others mentioned.

Is there a point to this? You can make this same stupid comparison with every franchise QB in the league.

2013 Salaries

Joe Flacco - 20.1 million
Ben Rapistberger - 11.6 million
Drew Brees - 9.75 million
Philip Rivers - 10.2 million
Peyton Manning - 18 million
Eli - 13 million
Jay Cutler - 7.7 million

Maybe this was an attempt to bring out the Jerry GM haters, as well as Romo haters.

Yeah, you can make this 'same stupid comparison' with most franchise QBs with the exception of Brees, Peyton Manning, Rodgers, Brady, Rivers, and Alex Smith since they all got their team to the playoffs.

So, that leaves you with the rest of the franchise QBs with the exception of Ben, Flacco, and Eli who actually have something to show as in rings relatively recently.

So, that leaves you with a biting criticism on the contract as it relates to success for Romo, Cutler, Stafford, and Matt Ryan unless I missed anyone. Money for nothing.

Spare me. Romo played more than well enough to get into the playoffs this season. Only a few played better.

Some of you can't read - I stated in the OP how it demonstrates good drafts and friendly contracts can build up a good team. The whole premise for the thread came from the link I provided - which is an article that uses Manning's cap number instead of Romo's. This is a Cowboys forum though. The fact one salary can pay for a top D is notable, given the state of this defense.

If I had to choose between Romo and our D vs. Orton and Seattle's D, the latter would be my choice. The price of a franchise QB is a bubble, it's gonna come down, percentage-of-salary-cap wise.

You didn't read my post. You ommitted all of the expensive players on their defense.

Yeah, I hear you. Romo is going to kill the cap the next two or three years and he hasn't delivered jack squat the past three years.. And he might not even be able to play with his bad back. Same with Ware. Hard to compete when you have two players eating up 1/4 of the cap and they can't even stay healthy let alone play good enough to deliver a playoff appearance. Romo's performance was acceptable but nothing that warrants his huge contract last year.

Demarcus Ware
2013 Cap Hit: $8,092,443
2014: $16,003,750
2015: $17,503,750
2016: $14,032,000

This should have been the thread in the first place. How do we spend our defensive cap dollars.

I do agree that Seattle caught lightening a bottle for the short term with all of these rookie contracts.
Check back in a year or two.

Try these numbers again when those guys are off their rookie contracts.

This post makes no sense.

both seattle and sf will be different teams with the talent watered down in a year or two after they have to pay their qb's.

Wait till seattle has to pay Sherman, Thomas and Wilson.
Agreed.

Once Kaepernick and Wilson get their $15-$20M a year contracts, their depth at other positions will vanish. But until then, they will remain atop the league.

Tony Romo's performance was "acceptable"? What does that mean?

Too bad he doesn't have the Seahawk's or 49er's defense to fall back on because then he'd be a "winner" and have "it" like Wilson or Kaepernick.
