Connor Williams

Notice Bob said going against 3-techs of NFL. That's my point....going against the best NFL has to offer every Sunday. Some seem to think we're bashing the kid and simply not the case, not with me at least. I see this kid no different than any other rookie needing a little time before he's ready to start and meet standards required by NFL at his position. To be honest, I'm more worry about him having a Green/Falcon type game that impacts his confidence.

I haven't seen the statistical breakdown of Connor's performance week 2 but in terms of week 1 he played pretty well. I don't know why everyone wants to make this such a huge deal. He's had one good game and one supposed shaky game, he is a rookie remember? He'll be overmatched at times this year but he'll win more than he loses. After an offseason in an NFL weight room he'll be amongst the leagues best.

I did and think you are spouting hyperbole. He needs to anchor better but his mobility and hands are fine. Also that was Geno Atkins.
I'm actually spouting my opinion. Since this is what we do on a message board.

Were his hands fine when he let the defender run right past him on either flush Dak out of the pocket or make 2 tackles for losses on running plays?

Small sample size but so far my opinion is that he isnt ready to be a plug and play starter.

There are various opinions of his week 1 performance. One is that he gave up a sack in a quarter of play. He was pushed into the backfield also.
Here is another.

The biggest story coming out of this game is PFF All-Pro guard Zack Martingoing down with a knee injury. Like many teams in the NFL, Dallas has some serious depth issues along the offensive line and that was evident tonight. In the starting rotation, rookie Connor Williams struggled for the second straight week as he adjusts to guard at the pro level as Andrew Billings really gave him trouble and he struggled in space on pull-lead plays.

Connor had 1 pressure in 33 snaps. If that's not a good game I don't know what is.

He doesn't look strong enough to play in the NFL right now, that can be fixed by putting inn some work. Not super comforable with him playing this season he's gonna need time, if he's our best option this year we have a problem. Try Looney at LG once Fredricks gets back, he looked decent at C

You are right. You don't know what is......sorry couldnt resist.

Its not as simple as saying.....he didnt give up a sack....

Someone took the time to break down every play and they rated him as awful on about 7-8 plays out of his 33.....Awful as in he got beaten bad. Just because the play was a sweep to the other side of the field doesnt mean it doesnt matter that he got pushed on his face right off the snap.

Stats can be used to present pieces of a story someone wants to present.

The reality is that his play so far has not been good enough to deserve a start when we all know Dak needs a comfortable pocket and Zeke needs to be our focal point.

Geno Atkins was destroying him.

What will Fletcher Cox do?

Allen/Payne in Washington?

You don't get to play 3rd stringers in the regular season much.

He needs an offseason of weights.

Watching the replay on NFLN (right now) and he's actually doing a nice job of run blocking, including pulling plays.

Pass protection is where work is needed, and he's getting the work.
Agree. Just watching replay on nfl and he made several nice plays on td drive. Run blocking, pass protection, and even pulling on a sweep.

I hate saying this but Connor Williams gets beat on so many plays. Last week was bad and people just assumed it was jitters....then tonight he was beaten by his man on way too many plays in the passing and running game.

I think it’s becoming a concern.
We all know he looks small for a guard. I’m not sure if he is playing out of position or if maybe he just isn’t very good at this point and may be a liability this season.

We may have assumed since we hit on so many OL in recent years that we would hit on this one as well.

Thoughts?
He's got quick feet but lacks strength and he really needs to get in the weight room add an out 15 pound of muscle unfortunately it maybe next offseason.

I'm not so worried about getting pushed back into QB, but whiffing and DT has free run at your QB. One 1st quarter play he whiffs, looks back, "gee whiz" .. who was that I asked? ... 52. .. Looked like he was outright beat, and Dak had to scramble.

In camp he was regularly smashed by Jihad Ward, and I hoped it was Jihad Ward-good not Connor Williams-bad. I remember a vaunted scout during draft interviewed - Williams not strong enough, would not draft him. Scout spoke on condition of anonymity, not our scout another teams' ..

Williams seems smart and dedicated dude though - hope he can overcome.

I get it. You are biasing out anything positive about him and making hyperbolic claims about where he is to describe him for yourself.

I watched every play of his about 3 times and did not come away with the same idea. He needs better lower leg strength but I hardly see the trainwreck you claim. And he made more blocks in space then he missed.

If rookies aren’t all pros day 1 everyone thinks they’re busts. OL take time to learn how to play and it’s rrally hard when you can’t actually practice your actual craft in the offseason due to lack of contact

He was blown up or beaten 1 on 1 in at least 8 plays. You can’t get beat that often in less than a half and have been anything but a train wreck.
This doesn’t mean he didn’t make a few good blocks. He did. But getting beat that often means you are not playing good enough to be one of our top 5.

He may have good feet...he may try hard and never give up on a play. I like the kid and really really hope for the best. But the truth is he didn’t perform well. You don’t have to agree with my opinion or the opinion of PFF or anyone else. I won’t criticize your opinion or try to label it as anything else. This is why we come here. Not to preach or belittle others opinions...but to discuss ours.

I haven’t seen him called a bust.
Show me these claims.
It’s not gold or trash. He may end up in the HOF...but today he isn’t playing well enough to deserve to start at this level.
How did we get to where we are now where if anyone questions the play of a player we assume we need to take sides or mount a defense.

It's not as simple as beat or not beat but you go ahead and act like it is.

I think Williams will eventually be just fine. Sure he’s a bit raw,and has things to learn and work on,but will be a solid addition on the line the more time he gets under his belt. It’s the Chaz Green type band-aid picks I take issue with when addressing the O-line needs, and he’s anything but that.

I think he will be fine also. He just needs better technique and use his quickness and strength more. Sure he can use more strength. But he seems to play too high and allow the dlinemen to get up on his chest. He needs to be able to plant his feet and get better on the center of gravity.

Gaining weight right now is not an option for him. But once he gets his technique down asap, he'll be just fine.

Then what is this thread all about? He has gotten beaten by two great DTs in preseason? Heck, even stats posted about the hurries he gave up aren't anything bad.

He's a rookie. Not everyone comes in playing like Martin and Frederick. How was this board Smith's first year at RT? He didn't grade out fantastically early on.
