Constructing an arbitrary team under the following stipulation

Let's play a little game.

Let's say you're given some NFL team. Now, let's say the team will be constructed but you must decide:

Of the 22 starters, 4 of them must be elite (All-Pro caliber) players and 4 of them must be awful (no business starting on an NFL team).

Which positions would be your 4 elite players and which would be your 4 awful players?

Let's assume the other 14 starters are decent players and not liabilities.

Assuming that we're running a 4-3...

My elite would be a QB, LT, CB, and DE.

If I'm running a 2TE set, I'd designate a TE as awful. An OLB. Probably a guard. And maybe my second WR.

I'll take All Pro QB and RB. Awful 2nd WR and FB or 2nd TE depending which type offense I run.

All Pro DT and DE (4/3) I'm going strong in the trenches. Awful WLB and one bad CB ( I'm hoping pressure and one of the S will help cover weak CB.)

you can hide a bad DT with a Great DT, and hide a bad RB, WR, and TE with a decent line, QB, and AP WR

I'll go a different way, based on a couple things:
1. There's research suggesting that offense is much more consistent than defense year-to-year, such that the best way to build a team is to build an elite offense and compete on the defense's up years. So I'll live with "decent, not a liability" players across the board on defense. And hire a great DC.
2. I want lousy players at the easiest positions to find adequate replacements. I may not win this year, but next year I will roll!

Elite: QB, LT, C, RT
Awful: LG, RG, RB, WR2

On a side note, having truly lousy starters is a good thing, because they're easy to identify and replace.
