That 2007 defense was pretty solid. Championship-capable (I'm trying to move away from the descriptor "championship caliber" since it's far too subjective).
All we can hope is that the continued investment of resources in the defensive front pays off. We have some guys who can contribute, and hopefully make it to the point where Romo is only throwing the ball on 3rd and long in the 4th quarter of games with a lead in order to move the chains. I would love to see Murray get 30 carries a game with 16 of them coming in the 4th quarter.
I don't know. You know I'm an optimist by nature, but I think fixing our DL this offseason is a really tall order. Even getting the WDE we need in the draft--and we're not in a great position in the first round to do that at value--we're still going to be a few players shy of a full complement on defense.
I think we can probably get to 'middling.' Meaning, we'll see more comfortable wins against bad or injured teams, and perhaps win 1-2 of the close games against other competitive-but-not-great teams. But I don't see how we're going to get good enough to beat a real contender (beyond the usual puncher's-chance) in the coming season. That's ok...10-6 and a playoff berth and decent showing would be ok if we're moving forward, generally. But I'd be happier if I could see a path to getting a lot better and really being competitive for 2014.
