Since Griffin's first season injury, he has proven nothing. *If* the Cowboys sign him, I imagine it would be to a cut-friendly contract and I would go into it assuming he will be cut after training camp unless he proves he still has some potential.

They may believe Romo has years left, but the body of an NFL player can age rapidly after injuries. Look at Peyton Manning for example. If Romo can avoid injuries, it's quite possible he plays another 3-4 years with at least 1-2 at a high level the Cowboys need. However, Romo's 2015 season reminded a lot of people that he's not a 20-something player any more and that the Cowboys need a replacement (not backup, but replacement) if Romo goes down for an extended period of time. The Cowboys have to know that relying on Romo to be healthy all season is a foolish strategy. They need to look at every season Romo has left in him as a bonus, not a given.

Agreed and I am all for having a quality backup QB but as you said what has RG3 or JM done in the NFL...nothing recently except prove neither are adequate starters in the NFL. Other than Steve Young when has a highly touted young QB failed with his drafted team and moved on to become one of the games elite....this franchise needs more than a quality backup it needs the next elite QB who is going to be the face of this franchise for the next ten plus years unless of course you want to go the route this team did between Aikman and Romo.

If and when we bring him in talk to me later. I Believe in a new setting he can be a good backup to Romo. People that think he is washed up have no clue. I have been watching football for 45 years and have seen athletes that were washed up on one team and were rejuvenated on a new team.

Reclamation projects that have been successful in new surroundings do not come with nearly the same technical baggage Griffin does.

You bring him onboard, you have to modify your offense to compensate for his handicaps. Placing him into this system will require him to do what Romo does to and that is quite simply over his head.

Jim Plunkett he's not.

If RG3 becomes a Cowboy, my 46 years of fandom will come under question. It is a sickening thought to think he is in the same uniform as Troy and a Roger.
.

so do you want manziel or do you NOT want RGIII?

i wish both would retire for personal reasons and form a religious commune in tahiti and quit threatening my team with their presence but i have to go with the "jones needs a name" crowd here. whoever kept him from manziel in the draft i can only hope they'll keep him from these 2 shiney objects of uselessness.

Speaking for myself, I do not want either.

I want a QB at the top of this draft that can serve as the backup and be groomed to be Romo's successor.

A Goff/Wentz along with Moore to compete is what I would like to see in camp, not a reckless twerp in Manziel or a high maintenance diva like Griffin.

Tough to name one that became "elite" other than Steve Young but to play devil's advocate, Jim Plunket won 2 Super Bowls with the Raiders and was drafted No.1 overall by the Pats. Trent Dilfer went 6th overall and made a Pro Bowl plus won a Super Bowl after failing with the team that took him initially. Doug Williams went 17th overall and won a Super Bowl after failing in Tampa.

None were "elite" but the SB wins are something all of us would take I assume...

there are strange days ahead when we agree. i either need to hide for a week or buy a lottery ticket.

in any event, i don't think we'd have the luxury of moore and a rookie qb to backup romo *and* have that vet presence we'd have hugged dez's monkey for last season. they're in it to compete and for some unfathomable reason of loserdome they think either of these 2 can hold up any better than the crap we've fed through here recently at backup.

i'm holding out for a kitna. i'm holding out for a kitna until the season starts.

we need someone like that back there. not a "pity me i need a 2nd chance reject" headcase.

Cam Newton and Peyton Manning say hello also (both drafted top 5)...............be sure to watch them in Superbowl 50

There was also a heck of a lot more buzz about both of them during their last college seasons than there is about any of these 3. Neither Cam nor Peyton were post-season draft-board risers.

I originally thought that they should sign a quality back-up and draft a QB high , but now I am all in on a rookie behind Tony with no vet in his way.

Let the rookie get offseason reps, take Wednesdays during the season while Tony is resting and put them in the game if Romo goes down. Last season showed that this offense can't work with inferior QB talent and that's exactly what RGIII and these other guys are.

Bring him in. Don't get why some are so dense they wouldn't want him here just because he was with the Commanders. How can adding him HURT?! If it doesn't work out fine, he's gone. If it works out we might have a young QB who can lead this team to the playoffs and the superbowl for the next 5-10 years, and we got this #1 overall pick talent for NOTHING. Grow up, keep your personal stuff out of this, it's business. The moment he throws a TD or wins a game for us you'll be all up on his bandwagon and order your RG3 jersey the very next day.

I cannot understand anyone's objection to kicking the tires on RGIII.
No one will sign him without a physical and a workout/interview.
No one in Dallas will be involved in a bidding war for a QB who didn't play last year.

If signed, he's signed as a possible upgrade at backup to Moore. He then provides at least a slim chance of getting his game back together behind a better OL with a star receiver.

That move doesn't stop us from drafting a QB at 4 if our guy is there, but that's far from a sure thing. If no QB we want is there at 4, a veteran backup allows us to take a developmental QB in another round or waiting for next year, depending on how the draft unfolds. It also doesn't prevent us from cutting RGIII loose if he stinks in camp to go with another backup.

Unlike Johnny Football, who is clearly off his rails right now, bringing RGIII in on a prove-it, incentive laden contract to compete is a no-brainer. If he's offered something better elsewhere, so be it.

I agree with this. I don't think he's the future but it won't hurt at all to bring him in. He's never had a line like ours so you never know.

I want a capable backup that can win games IF he is forced to play. Not sure any of this year's crop of QB's, including Goff, Wentz and Lynch, are capable day one guys or even No. 2's that can win games for Dallas this season. The more this discussion is had, the more I see myself leaning toward Colt McCoy as the backup QB, should he do the unlikely and leave Washington. But if I had to choose between Griffin and Manziel, I go Griffin every time and twice on Sunday. Not sold on Kalen Moore as the backup though.

That said, I am fine with grabbing a backup QB AND drafting Goff, Wentz or Lynch, if their evaluations have them as top 5 picks and capable of being a franchise QB. I do not think that Dallas should surpass one of them just because they sign Griffin or Manziel or McCoy. Especially if the scouts label any of them or all of them top 5 caliber players and franchise QB material.

Don't necessarily want them to be No. 2 this coming season though Alexander.

Who is objecting solely on the grounds because he was with the Commanders?

How can adding him HURT?!

It hurts for one simple reason. His presence will have Jerry Jones believing he is the future at the position and that fact would preclude us from doing the right and smart thing, which is drafting our potential franchise QB for at least the next few years.

Instead, we will be fooling around with a developmental progress stopper diva QB that simply can't play for several seasons because we will have invested the time and money into him.[/quote]

The way our offense is structured, I do not think any veteran that is brought in will be any better than Weeden or Cassel. If we insist on crossing our fingers with Romo, the best bet is to kill two birds with one stone. Get the future at the position first and in the event he has to play, so be it.

Getting a veteran, especially one like Griffin who will need reps to begin with will make that impossible. The rookie would never get enough reps to even begin to develop.

likely cause it would jack up his knee again...

but like you - i don't understand things. mostly here the fascination of retreads w/a former shiny name.

Can't run anymore, can't read defenses from the pocket, averages about one fumble per game for career.

But I'd take him in a heartbeat over Manziel.

Griffin won't sign here without first knowing what the plans are for the Cowboys and the draft, at least in terms of drafting a QB @ #4. It would make zero sense for him to sign with a team that basically is guaranteeing they're going in a different direction for the starting QB position, which is what drafting Wentz would be doing...especially when there are enough other teams out there that would give Griffin a realistic chance to start again.

If RG3 signs here, no way the Cowboys draft a QB in the top 5.

I agree here. Makes perfect sense.

I don't know why we can't do both. Sign a backup in FA....draft a QB if one is there we like.
