That’s the word from Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, who said today that Rush’s ability to call audibles is “very similar” to Prescott’s, and the Cowboys haven’t had to change a whole lot since turning to Rush.

Not only that, they’ve been less ‘aggressive’, not trying to attack downfield.

We haven’t changed our approach,” McCarthy said, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “I would put us on the high side of being aggressive at the line of scrimmage, whether it’s with Dak or with Cooper.”

You don't change offenses just because a backup is playing, you change the play calling. The plays have to suit the QB that's running them. But with Rush being in our system so long, the only thing they probably changed was the option routes. No one wants a QB with limited playing time to be out their trying to read option routes. So the offensive play calling has gone from a Air Coryell style to a West Coast style. But it's still all one playbook, with the same terminology. Play calling might have changed but the offense hasn't.

Aggression at the line of scrimmage is not the same as aggression down field. That just means Rush can make all the audibles if needed. Wether it be sliding protection to one side or keeping a guy in. Changing from a pass to a run or vise versa is still allowed with Rush. If he sees one on one coverage with a single high look, he can call an audible and have a WR run the go route. So, aggression at the line of scrimmage, just tells me that Rush has the same amount of freedoms that Dak had.

With the emergence of the "new" Smith and Peters working in to the team, our identity can get back to run first and we'll be a handful for anyone.

I liked the Zeke and Pollard split against NY, keep that up.

A 2016 type O with a seasoned Dak - I will take that.

What does Mike know? He admitted he doesn’t even know the offense.

What’s the run pass ratio been the last 3 games? Seems more balanced than in the past and I like that better.

Game 1 - 18 runs 42 passes (46 if you include 4 sacks)
Game 2 - 27 runs 31 passes
Game 3 - 30 runs 31 passes

It has been night and day in terms of balance. I don't know if you credit Moore or Rush but the difference is obvious. If this team wants to continue winning, it needs to continue running the ball. Either Dak or Moore is getting impatient too quickly and leaping straight to Mountain West football. This crap has to stop. To me if Moore is calling too many pass plays then it's on Dak and McCarthy to reign him in. If Dak is audibling to too many pass plays then it's up to Moore and McCarthy to reign HIM in. I don't know who it is .. and I don't really care.. but it absolutely has to stop. This defense is too good to be wasted by an offense that wants to have quick drives because they can't stop themselves from passing every down.

Think about this.. Neither the Rams nor the Bengals made it to 4 ypc in the Super Bowl.. yet both ran it more than 20 times.. The Rams ran it 23 times for 43 yards. Less than TWO YARDS PER CARRY!!! Every day people here post that "you can't get keep banging your head against a brick wall..." yet two teams in the Super Bowl were out there doing just that.

In the previous Super Bowl the Bucs ran it 33 times to 27 passes.. And I hear they had a decent passer QB.

The year before that the Chiefs ran it 29 times to only 20 for the 49ers.. who passed it 31 times despite averaging SEVEN YARDS PER CARRY on the ground. If they just keep running it and not let Garrapolo throw two picks they would have run KC off the field.

The bottom line is that good teams know they have to be balanced.. and smart OCs and QBs make sure they are.. If Dak and Moore don't figure this out I want them both gone..

All true and I actually thinks this staff sees it now too. You simply have to run the ball. No matter the outcome.

Very very very very well said!!!!

I could not agree more. We argue and argue and argue about who's calling all the passes, but it comes down to the fact that it needs to be controlled, period.

Some of yall are dense. No one suggested we scrapped the offense. It's being called differently.

We are running 12 personnel and max protection as well as running the damn ball.

It's fascinating the amount of energy we waste on who to assign the blame to. Like it matters.. All I want is for this team to win.. If we were throwing up 12-13 wins every season being a 65-70% pass team I would shut the hell up.. But we aint.. so it needs to be fixed. What I will say is that we didn't become that 65-70% pass offense until Moore took over play calling. Up to that point Dak was perfectly content to throw it for 250 yards and win the game. I know people will claim it was the contract but that ignores the fact that 2021 was the first season he played on the new contract and this change was already underway since 2019.

And who here doesn't remember how we got to 5-1 before the calf injury last season.. 4 straight damn near 200 yard rushing games.. and then one game where the run was mostly bottled up and Dak went for 450.. That's the luxury this team has.. It can chew the opposition up for 200 on the ground and if they overcommit to the run it can strafe them for 400 through the air. What it can't do is win consistently trying to throw it 50 times against 7 and 8 man drops while simultaneously tipping off that they are passing every down. Yes they can clobber chumps.. but that crap don't work against playoff teams.. which I have on good authority is what you're going to see in the playoffs.

There is no excuse this year. Unlike the last few years, not every big run is (seemingly) being called back due to a penalty.

It amazes me how quick we abandoned the run Game 1 this year, because out side that failed reverse/double reverse on the 1st drive, virtually every run play was good.

Who's fault is it? I don't know. But like you said, MM, KM and Dak needs to figure it out.

Running the ball and Play Action should be the main focus of this offense. And I couldn't care less who the QB is. It could be Brady, Herbert, Burrows, Aikman, Staubach, Romo, Marino, Brees, ect ...

RUN THE DANG ROCK AND RUN A GOOD NUMBER OF PLAY ACTION PASSES!!!!!

The easiest type of O to defend against is the long passing game. The rushers have to worry very little about contain, they can just pin back their ears and go. And they get extra time to get there. And then, the OL grows weary from having to hold their blocks for long periods of time every play.

JG was also bad about going passpasspass, and did so until we sorta fell into Murray rushing for 1,800.

That doesn’t mean they have changed anything. That could just mean Rush doesn’t audible to a pass as much as Dak does.
