I'm totally on board with Jerry's thoughts. How high is high enough? What happens if they raise it 25 feet and someone hits it then? They may need to raise it a bit to reduce the possibility but they'll still need rules to determine how to handle things when it does get hit. There's just no way to guarentee it won't be hit ... no matter how high they raise it.

I don't understand who many of you are over reacting to this. To listen to some of you we should just level the new stadium just because a punter hit the scoreboard. It's not an embarrassment. It's not a travesity. I think it's actually cool. Heck, maybe this is all Jerry's master plan to bring more attention to the Cowboys after TO left :) .

One more thing. If there's any blame for this it should be directed towards the NFL office. They are the one's ultimately responsible and they signed off on it.

I have to admit I agree a little with the poster who raised the homefield comparisons of the "Green Monster" and the Astros' outfield.

There's a little romance to the idea of having a homefield advantage that is uniquely Cowboys Stadiumish. A giant video board that can smack down punts certainly falls in that category, especially when it doesn't seem to affect our own punter.

But I also fear the egg-on-face nature of it all. Even if Jerry complied with league rules, fans/media will look at the video board's height as a failure on our part.
I love how he mentioned that he can't understand why anyone punts down the middle of the field as opposed to either side to pin the ball deep. He makes perfect sense.

That monstrosity is definitely an attention grabber in more ways than one. It was the topic of conversation during our pre-game meetings last night. We probably should have been talking about our opponent but it didn't really matter. We spanked em 59-0. :D

I think the height is our responsibility, not the leagues as I'm sure the league was relying on us for information as to how high we wanted it and how high was enough. I think thy would trust that Jerry has been doing this stuff long enough that he wouldn't need to be baby sat on it.

That said, i like it just where it is as a stadium quirk. I think it's pretty darn cool. It's not like it's just on one side of the stadium, both teams deal with it.

I dofind it somewhat humorous that people have been saying, is it too low? Are you sure? Only for his to happen.

It blows my mind that they can hit that thing. I couldn't kick a ball filled with helium that high. Amazing.

I think the Titans punter was trying to hit it and in a real game no one would. You punt downfield for distance not straight up.

Oh no question. There is no reason to kick a ball straight up like that unless that is what you're trying to do. The only time you would do anything close to that is if you were just out of field goal range and trying to pin them behind the twenty. Even then, there is no point as it doesn't reach the end zones.

It stretches from the 20 to the 20 so if you were at mid field and trying to loft one up to pin your opponent inside the 20 you could hit it regularly. I agree with those that like it where it's at. If you don't like it, directional kick that sucker. :D

The issue at hand is that jerry didnt just build this "stadium" for football. He built it for multi use purposes . Honestly he should have given it more thought . The league gave him a min amount of feet and he goes right up to it barley exceeding it? I hate that logic really do. (Plenty of situations with annoying neighbors for another time ..lol )

Between the way to may tiers and the distance from the field of seats to the field and that to low video screen im dissapointed . I know it's not done yet . But if pshyching out the other teams punter is what we were shooting for for homefield advantage then we nailed it ..

I just dont think the scoreboard is as important for football as is it for basketball or concerts ..etc.. For those occassions that a football game is being played(again no. 1 priority in buliding this place again right?) that thing needs to be moved end of discussion. Seriously that's what it was built for who f'ing cares about a U2 concert in october? Its suppossed to be a football stadium first

. It's embarrsing IMO And you cant compare it to baseball because it's not the same. Fields dont have to be regulation size and the quirkyness is part of the game that most fans love. If you want to compare it something in baseball then compare it to the ridiculous catwalks at the trop in tampa bay . where they have to post the rules on how they play before every game which is what they will have to do now before every one of our games.. Which is a black eye for us.

I say fight to keep it right where its at until McBrair says he has a problem with it. The league okayed it because it meets their minimum standard. Let it be in the head of every punter that comes to town. If they want to hit it for their own selfish egos by all means go ahead. If they are sucessful, it's merely a do-over. If they don't hit it, it means a shorter punt coming our way. I also like the fact that we may get the occassion shank if a punter has his mind on the board instead of punting or thinks he has to punt a little different because of the board.

I'd leave it right where its at for as long as I could. I'd even go get an injunction against the league if I had to.

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen (we got the head's up from Darren Rovell's Twitter page), the cost of moving the monstrous, four-sided drive-in movie screen out of the path of punted footballs will be "at least $2 million."

But that doesn't mean Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will agree to tinker with one of his favorite features of the new venue.

Per Mort, it's Jones' position that the video board was constructed in accordance with "league specifications," and Jones has "no intentions of raising it to a higher level."

That said, Mort reports that a "preliminary discussion" already has occurred regarding an adjustment.

The next question becomes the responsibility for the costs of moving the thing up. Our guess is that Jones will insist that the league cover the expenses.

And it's hard to argue with that, if as it appears the league approved the current configuration.

ITs called home field advantage. Our punter never touched it

How? The league gave him specs, he followed them, the league approved. There is nothing embarrassing about it. He actually has it higher than what they league said it had to be, it's not like they told him "80 feet" and he hung 81 feet.

And our ProBowl punter had no problem not hitting it. Who's even said if he does hit it, it would be his fault with a bad kick, and not the board being too low.

I think they should keep it that way too

use it as home-field advantage, McBrier knows how to boom them w/o hitting it, so I see no problem if it's in every punter's head that comes to town

Great post, DallasEast. Love the epic fail of Trapasso on the one with the "explosion" graphic haha!

One of the other punts Trapasso sent the ball higher than the bottom of the board, but outside of it. It was #11 in the graphic above, when the Cowboy returner had it go through his hands, and another Cowboy jumped on it. The ball clearly sailed between my line of sight on the Cowboys side of the field and the video screen. Apparently Joe Buck made a comment about that as well on the broadcast.

There were several muffed punt returns, on both sides. I think our returners need to get some practice out there and get used to catching punts in the new stadium, and THAT is going to be a huge home field advantage if other teams regularly drop punts. There's no simulating that in practice at most teams' facilities and could be a huge bonus for the Boys. Of course, this would lead to all manner of whining and crying from around the league :laugh2:

That's completely understandable if the punter's attempting to hit it.

thats right Hostile; the punter was aiming for the video board to hit it, did you see the smile on his face?

so it goes back to the NFL because they approved the video board being set where it was;

you also realize that jerry jones is a business man and he isnt going to pay for something that he was given the ok on if he can help it

now on the tv that night they did say after october when some utube concert was suppose to be through, they the cowboys planned to raise the board up some about 25 feet higher.

so take that for what its worth; but that what they said, kristi somebody on the cowboys coverage with mickey, brad sham etc

you got that right dallaseast, that could be a good benefit for us, if opposing teams fumble punts due to the video board blocking out the flight of the ball somewhat with the punt returners not aware of it;

you can bet when that does happen and it will that opposing teams will object and jerry jones or the NFL will have to pay to raise the video board up about 25 feet higher

but they may give us a fumbled punt recovered by our team after our punt returners get used to the field
