The title of the thread confused me this early in the morning: R Williams the receiver or R Williams the safety?
Should I assume you're being facetious or just dont follow the Cowboys much.................?

Knowshon Moreno might be a decent comparasion. He had talent but never really got a chance due to injuries and competition until his 4th year in the league. Sure that was his only good season but I'll be happy to get 1,000 yards rushing and 500 yards receiving from Williams if he does win the job.

Well, even with Moreno, he started of his career playing 16 games and then 13 games before being injury plagued in 2011 and 2012. That's bad for an RB, Williams is even worse.

He has game and a strong skill set. His issue has been staying on the field. But then again he went unclaimed all year on the practice squad. Assuming he's now 100% healthy I'm expecting him to be a key contributor.

Thoughts - Opinions?

He has primarily had 1 injury (knee). He also had a shoulder issue but they used that as a reason to put him on IR because the knee was not ready.

I think you're on to something. There's a reason the Cowboys didn't get rid of him and gave him money to stay even though other teams wanted him.

I think he's going to be THE back by the end of the year.

Can you name me an RB in history that has had injury and confidence issues since his sophomore year in college finally having the light come on and becoming superman in his 5th season in the league?

There are no comparisons for Williams. There's one thing to go from team to team because teams overlooked talent, it's an entirely different thing when it's due to injury.

So if his injuries are a show stopper, why is he still with the Cowboys?

Could the fact his still with the team mean the Cowboys believe his injuries aren't career-ending?

I know. I mentioned this same thing last week. I'm hoping he will become our version of Priest Holmes. He had a rough start in three of his first four years in the league and then got behind that great Chiefs line and his career really took off. I am having trouble finding very many other running backs to compare him to. Maybe John Riggins or Justin Forsett? I I think Forsett's slow career start was lack of opportunities though.

Yes, and Matt Johnson might be 100% too. You can NOT count on somebody who has been injured for the past 4 years. The number one ability is availability.

He hasn't been injured for the past 4 years. He was injured in his first 2 seasons and then healthy in his last 2 seasons. But the Cards decided to move on in his 3rd season and then he was behind the depth chart in the 4th season with Dallas.

My issue with him is that he doesn't have a lot of top speed and his pass pro and pass catching is still suspect.

He's on the PS, hasn't even cracked his way into the lineup. And it really doesn't matter if one specific injury is career-ending or not, it's the fact that he has a number of injuries since 09 that have plagued him. And that knee injury he suffered is no joke, the fact that his other knee has also had issues is another red flag. And with this teams track record with RBs since Smith left, I'm going to say them liking Williams doesn't say much to me.

Even Murray didn't have a history like Williams.

I'm asking for an RB anywhere throughout history that has been plagued with injuries, only started 5 games in 4 seasons, and then turned things around and became productive? I have no problem with him being on the PS, doesn't matter to me, but I bring this up when I read things like "Well, we have Williams" or "Williams will be our starter" - Where is the confidence coming from with him? A guy who has a known history of injury and confidence issues, and this is a guy we think will be a starter?

I think it's a struggle to even get this guy through camp and preseason, let alone cracking into the lineup. It's entirely different with him getting to second string or even first string and thinking he can carry any kind of the load, he couldn't do it in Arizona and he had trouble with it in college as well.

He had a knee issue his final season in Arizona. Now, how bad that knee issue was is up in the air, the coaching staff at that time didn't like Williams at all (Williams vague comments point towards there being some tension), but I won't overlook the fact that there was an issue with his other knee in 2013.

He also missed much of his last year in college.
I don't think people count the last 2 years because who can't stay healthy when they aren't playing football.
Out of the last 4 years he has been actually playing in football games he has been significantly injured for 3 of those years.
Not to mention his career 2.8 ypc....although he says he played too afraid because of his injuries.

Thomas Jones? It doesn't happen often, because early injuries often end careers, but it's not unheard of.

And Williams doesn't have confidence issues. You need to look into this player a bit more realistically.

Ryan Williams is only a secret in the sense that we don't know how long he can remain healthy nor if he will eventually learn to block as need be. Those things aren't exactly very well-kept secrets. I wish him well, though. His ability as a runner isn't a secret, nor is it being questioned much after last year's TC.

Wasn't there a report that there were multiple offers to sign Williams during the season, but he declined for a shot with us?

If (and it's a big if) he can stay healthy I don't see why he couldn't be a good back still. He had all the talent in the world at Va Tech. I'm excited to see Williams this pre-season. I'm not expecting him to win the job, but it is in the realm of possibility

He looked good last preseason. He was in fact reportedly offered chances to be on a few teams active roster last year but decided to stay in Dallas instead and on the practice squad. He was paid a good amount to still be here this very off season. In my opinion someone has told Williams something about his chances to make an impact here or why else would he stay? I know all about his pass protection weaknesses, but he should be coached up on that by now times at least a hundred. His injury while serious is in the rearview mirror looking back to Arizona. Seems healthy now and like I said he looked good in the last preseason. This should be the year to unleash him or let him go. I think he could be very good in this offense. Either he or Randle starts and one or the other spells the starter with RunDmc the third down back possibly.
