Could Sam Hurd emerge?

Hurd is and likely will be a hard working journeyman. The one to watch for is Ogletree.

I know one thing: Jerry Jones and the RW teabag club are losing credibility by the week on the whole RW trade.

:laugh2: Line of the week.

Sam played an entire year at#3 in 2007. To answer the OP's question.. No.. I don't think he's capable of emerging quite like Miles. Miles is faster with better hands and better RAC capability. However I love Hurd and think he can be a great contributor..

If anything.... that "next" guy you're looking for is Kevin Ogletree. He's the guy that we have to figure how to work in.

No, Sam Hurd will not "emerge." He will not be on this team next year.

Settle down...it was one catch

Put the anointing oil away!

Yet on on a per/avg. he's out performing RW. I agree that you can't anoint Hurd after one game/catch, etc., but the fact that he's averaging more per catch than RW and is behind RW by one TD with less than half the catches is a little unnerving. Which brings me back to my (admitted) knee jerk reaction: Was the RW trade necessary?

It has been argued in this thread that RW is the more talented guy. I can't think of an argument against it. However there was counterpoint made that talent doesn't outweigh chemistry. To this point, Romo's chemistry with RW is virtually non-existent. A big indicator was the TD to Austin. Roy had his guy beat on the fade to the corner of the end zone. Romo gave it the token look and turned back the other way to complete a much tougher pass to Austin. Why? Because he TRUSTS Austin.

I don't know where the blame lies. But coach (another Zoner) pointed out that when a QB and WR misfire with eachother too often, the QB loses faith in the WR and will go elsewhere with the ball even if the other guy is covered because he trusts him to make the play. At some point the QB MAY disregard the untrusted WR altogether. I don't think Roy and Tony are at that point. But, there were a couple of throws to Williams yesterday that Romo read one way and Williams read the other. The results were incomplete passes (thankfully not INTs). That CANNOT bode well for Tony's confidence in Roy's ability to beat coverage.

Chemistry. It's all about chemistry. Roy and Tony don't have it (yet). Maybe Hurd and Romo do? Who knows.

Hurd reminds me of Crayton.

And that is not a bad thing.

We don't agree on a lot of things, zrin, but this one I agree wholeheartedly. I don't think Sam Hurd is ever going to light things up (here or anywhere else). I DO, however, think he can be a solid contributor (given the chance).

I have never noticed.

I'm, admittedly, a doom and gloomer at times. I prefer to call it realistic, but que sera sera.

I DO like what I'm seeing from the team lately, though. If that makes me a flip flopper, then so be it. I'm a show me guy. Fortunately, that lends me to "go with the flow", so to speak.

I've always seen Hurd as a possesion wideout for some reason, doesn't have the break neck speed but has decent hands from what i've seen in limited exposure

Why does everybody always think Hurd is slow? He's not slow. He wouldn't have a ton of ST tackles and be the first guy down the field half the time if he wasn't fast. Didn't he just run away from a DB to score last week? He's not the fastest guy on the team but he's at least as fast as the average starting receiver in the league.

He reminds me of Pinkston, but I think he has more potential. Why would he remind anyone of Crayton? They're not even close to being alike.

Hurd is a pretty decent 4th or 5th WR option. He knows the playbook, he has reliable hands. Apparently he can run every route for every receiving position (this has been quoted during the last two training camps), so he is a versatile backup without massive dropoff. He is cheap. He plays special teams and is usually a good tackler in kick/punt coverage (except he gets a significant number of penalties for blocking in back etc in our return game).

You can't have high priced guys at every depth spot, nor can you have high draft picks at every spot (although at WR that isn't an issue, hehe because everyone cept RW is undrafted or a 7th rounder I believe - which is amazing - and is more evidence that Romo helps WR's look good too).

Hurd is also still super young. I think he started at age 20-21, so he has a bit of upside and has already added a bunch of muscle to his frame, but could continue to build strength and his skills. If you get him at a good price he is a great 4th ot 5th WR. That being said Ogletree has really caught my attention in terms of how quick and agile he is. His burst from a standstill is really impressive and a good compliment to RW, Crayton, and Hurd who don't show the same first step. Would need to see it consistently, but intrigued by the 'Tree.

When Romo said that we've got 4 or 5 WRs that he's "very comfortable with", I believed him.

Hurd has good hands and runs good routes. I'm never surprised when he makes a big play for us in his limited opportunities.

We have pretty solid depth at the WR position and contrary to popular belief, I don't think we'll need to spend a high draft pick on a WR in 2010. Especially now that Austin has emerged like he has.

I knew Austin was good, but at the start of the season I was still a Hurd fan, and I still am. Hurd will never have the speed of Austin )though he was pretty quick getting into the endzone) but he has nice hands, nice route running, good grasp of the offense, etc. We DO NOT have to take a WR early in the draft, which means we MUST take an OL possibly with our first pick or certainly the first day. One more smart draft, and we will be well-stocked with young talent at nearly every position.

No. Hurd may have flashes but he will neve be consistent.

Heading into the season many were saying the same about Austin. Hurd like Austin is in his 4th season all he can do is make the most of the oppertunities that come his way, he did that yesterday and I'm sure he will get more oppertunities if he continues to deliver.

I agree. We should not trade any RB, WR, TE or anyone one defense because all we need to do is fill a few holes on the depth chart and we're in business. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. This is the most talented team I've seen in all my 20 years of watching the Cowboys. Whether we win the big one or not is another matter, but this team has as much talent, if not more, than any one I've ever seen assembled. JMO

Didn't they rave about Hurd and say he has the best hands on our team in training camp?

He isn't slow either though.

He is very quick when he runs his routes and can get by people.

IMO he just needs an opportunity and until Roy and Romo get on the same page i'd let Hurd cut into Roys snaps.

I didn't mean to sound off like he was a slug, but hes not one they would shift a safety to cover the deep flat over him, imo. Muhaust & Catch by the limited exposure I ment me personally

Hurd has had 4 years to work with Romo. In training camp '06, Hurd would stick around and catch loads of extra passes (on TO's advice). I don't think it was Bledsoe throwing to him. LOL.

It's obvious Romo trusts Sam. He did go to him twice against Champ Bailey.

I don't think it's time to write him off. You're correct. They've been developing chemistry for a long time and it's too soon to tell. Like someone else posted, the guy is still young and was undrafted, so typically those guys take a while to develop. And we should expect that.
