Could somebody explain to me why this team drafted a TE in the 2nd round?

They obviously didn’t believe in Jake Ferguson. I did. And for the record Mike was in love with LaPorta. But he got picked…..They then forced the pick……

Schultz, Dak's security blanket for several seasons, was leaving and they didn't know what they had in Ferguson, so they reached with predictable consequences.
And there's the answer. The team liked what it saw from Ferguson and Hendershot as rookies, but didn't know if either could even be as good as Schultz. I would have waited and added competition at the position later in the draft because of the potential Ferguson and Hendershot had shown.

Whoa slow down. He wasn't expected to come in and start catching the ball right away. He was a late 2nd round pick that needed to learn the pro passing game. That isn't new news. We knew that after he was picked.

The bottom line is most thought he would be another Kelce and the truth is that the expectation of him was far far lower and was a completely unrealistic goal. Additionally, he wasn't ever going to be a big factor in the passing game for the simple fact he is way down the target list to cath many balls.
Jake Ferguson was a 4th round pick in 2022 and wasn’t expected to do much of anything especially with Shultz as the starter but he caught 19 passes for 174 and a couple of TDs. He showed flashes that got everyone excited. Even Hendershot who was an undrafted rookie caught 11 passes for 103 yards and 2 TDs. Both players had better rookie seasons than Schoonmaker. John Stephens an undrafted rookie had a better camp than Schoonmaker. I haven’t heard anyone think Schoonmaker will be another Kelce. Don’t know where you got that from. The fans hated the pick and even the draft experts were scratching their heads when the Cowboys made the pick. Kiper said Schoonmaker wasn’t much of a receiver. The Cowboys reached because the two TEs they liked better Laporta and Kincaid were off the board and had terrific rookie seasons.

They can’t properly evaluate college prospects or their own players.

It was definite back to back 1st & 2nd round extreme fails on McClays scouting of those 2 positions.

The college tape and production of both was very poor.

Add in the logic, or lack there of that the TE had a long injury history and already old just further supports the Cowboy 2nd round throwaway pick of so many years now. A title they have earned.

When they draft the acl (injured in November) RB Brooks in the 2nd rd this year, that 2nd round Cowboys reputation of risky character or injury concerns will further continue their legacy in this regard.

They're 1 for 4 with their Michigan draftees so far. And that's if you count Jourdan Lewis as a hit. Whomever is in charge of Wolverine scouting might need a reprimand at the least.

Fasano, Benett, Escobar, Schoonmaker..... every few years they do this with predicable results. When they don't, they waste a pick on an often-injured player with potential that never works out.

I liked what we saw from Stephens as a pass-catching tight end before his injury. I wonder if he'll be able to build on that.

It’s going to be tough coming off an ACL. Missing his entire rookie season and having to rehab is going to set him back. We’ll see how it goes for him this summer. He certainly showed some potential. Hopefully he can return to form.

It is strange that we draft tight ends in the second who don't really have those injury problems but also don't seem to turn out to be more than backups. Of course, Fasano and Bennett both did better when they went to other teams and weren't stuck behind Witten, who wasn't coming off the field unless they dragged him off.

why this team drafted a tight end in the second round. That ruined the whole draft for me. Could have gotten a linebacker or an offensive lineman, positions of need. I just didn't get it. Please let me know your opinion on this.
Panic move because there was a run on TEs...and they were hell bent on selecting one....Thinking the original plan was for Shoe in the 3rd...but they got scared he wasn't going to make it to them....so they reached.

It definitely will depend on how well he's able to come back from the tear. It seems like most players aren't back to normal until their second year, which doesn't bode well for a UDFA who is just trying to make the team.

They didn’t trust Ferguson and panic with a bunch going off the board beforehand

Is he the wrong one? Who was the right one after Schoonmaker?
A 4-6 rounder w/ good blocking skills. Tucker Kraft played very well for GB, 3rd round. Will Mallory in the 5th looks as if he may be a player. Davis Allen, 5th.

Could’ve had a walk-in monster OG and moved Tyler to LT but we keep drafting Michigan busts

Because we wanted to replace Schultz and had no idea who Ferguson was. Same reason we brought back Witten, when we had Schultz.

We apparently can't evaluate TE's properly, even though we have had a lot of great TE's.

They seem to just fall in our lap and we have no idea until they are forced to play them.

Most likely the same reason Schoonmaker will be an all pro TE most likely on another team, while we think he is a bust.

Improve blocking was the primary reason. Add an additional receiving threat at TE was the secondary reason.
I guess because they thought that was the missing piece to our run game. Then they did not even draft the best blocking TE.
