Could somebody explain to me why this team drafted a TE in the 2nd round?

why this team drafted a tight end in the second round. That ruined the whole draft for me. Could have gotten a linebacker or an offensive lineman, positions of need. I just didn't get it. Please let me know your opinion on this.
It's not wrong to get a TE in the 2nd, or a DT in the 1st....IF they are they best players on the board.

But we don't have a GM...we have someone no more qualified to organize a draft than the people in here.

I mean....Jerruh wanted a DT last year, so his round 1 pick came up, and he just started scrolling down the Best Player Available list 20, 40, 50 names until he finally saw a DT, and just said "cool, I'll take him"

We're doomed under Jerry, because he simply isn't on par as the teams that have REAL gm's running the show, on teams that are run like Fortune500 companies, vs ours which is run like a mom and pop (or rather Pop and Idiot Son) used car dealership

remember we don't draft for need, it was obvious that DT and TE were of need

It's even worse than that. We are absolutely terrible at determining BPA.

This BPA vs need argument about drafting is just stupid. Agenda drivel. There's just so much more to it. Analyzing a player's skillset and how it transfers to the NFL is the big one, and we fail at that consistently.

JJ had already made up his mind that he was taking a TE in that slot come hell or high water.

Because contrary to what so many claim, this front office doesn't draft that well. Way too many misses in the premium rounds to really build a winning roster. How many wasted drafts does Will McClay have in the past decade? 2017 and 2023 come to my mind right away. Two entire years of absolutely nothing. 2017 being the Taco over TJ Watt draft. Throw in 2018, drafting an injury prone LVE and then Eagles pulled the chair out from under them by getting Dallas Goedert one pick ahead of them and we had zero backup plan.

No idea why Will McClay is heralded as some draft guru.

It's like, we got lucky a few times and suddenly the lemmings started proclaiming the greatness of McClay.

Know why we took Martin? Because the guy we wanted was gone. Know why we took Fredsy? Because Romo refused to renegotiate his contract unless Jerry took a Center in the first round. Why'd we take Tyron? Because our OLT position was in such horrific shape due to previous bad drafting that we were forced to take an OLT w/ a high first.

Got Parsons because two teams jumped ahead to take the CBs we wanted. Lamb? Draft slide due to his skinny build.

Yeah, we've been better at drafting since McClay, but only because it was so horrific before that. 2nd rounders are a major part of the core of your team, and we waste them year after year after year.

You can sign one of 15 blocking TEs every offseason for $3 mil a year.
And that’s high end. A perfect spot to go get a FA since they’re allergic to spending big on outside players.

I’ll stick with my analogy…

The team spent $90,000 to buy a Honda Accord. Nothing wrong with an Accord but they didn’t need to pay premium retail for it.

Of course, with his recent surgery, we can now say we paid $90K for an Accord and found out it had a broken axel within the first 6 months of ownership.

To answer the question, probably because it was so much worse when Jerry and his buddies were running it.

Passing on players because “they don’t fit the scheme” is beyond maddening, especially since they change schemes constantly.

2018 and 2020 were actually good drafts, and provided a deep enough core which allowed this past run under McCarthy.

The 2021 draft is what killed them. They had five premium picks and got only Micah.

Too many guys like Ball, Walezko, Wright give nothing at all, and most others like Osi and Golston, very little.

It’ll begin to show on the field before long. It’s not even bashing them as much as pointing out that drafting low several years in a row is going to catch up to you. So prepare to either break it down or use free agency to keep it going.

Don’t try telling them they aren’t outsmarting everyone else. Billionaire narcissists determine what’s best, then surround themselves with people who validate it…and here we are.

Ok, but why pick him at all in the 2nd if he was that far from being ready to do anything but block?
The draft is for the future now right now.
I agree, as I've said before we were in the hunt for a BLOCKING TE, could have easily got one later as you said, or picked one up in FA. This pick could have been better thought out, but there was a run on TE and they wanted to get one
Wrong. That isn't why they took Schoon. Besides, he isn't just a blocking TE.

You trying to tell us the Cowboys didn't think things thru before making that pick? Really? That they just picked a name out of a hat?

And how did that work out helping our run game?

Pretty sure O'Cyrus would have helped our run game and Martin never would have held out or we could have easily traded him.

The Martin scenario was almost like blackmail. Him and his agent timed it perfectly.
