Could This Cowboy Draft Be That Epic?

I'll quibble with one part.

Some of the doom and gloom isn't just Romo but the defense as well. They still have some issues that need resolving and I don't think it's outrageous to think this defense, even with this great of an offense, could be the weak link in getting to the SB. The offense is SB worthy. The defense? Yet to be determined.

For sure. I will say, though, part of why the inattention to defense made me so grumpy is because of the colossal cost in picks we were going to have to cough up to replace the QB. If we fill that hole with a late 4th (*if*), we'll actually have ammunition to address the pass rush and to replace or extend a CB or two next year. Hitting on a QB opens up so much with the build-a-team plan.

I"m not counting those chickens yet. The reads in preseason are much easier than they are when the games count. But it's hard not to start getting excited.

Either way, though, I do wish we'd traded down from #4 and added some more defenders or picks. There's a lot we could do yet to improve the talent on that side of the ball.

Jaylon Smith would definitely have been a Top Five pick if he had been healthy. One of the announcers said in this game that if you didn't know and someone told you Dak was a Top Five pick, you would think it had been a good pick at that spot.

Not that we should count chickens, but its possible we get 3 of the 10 best players in this draft when all is said and done.

We definitely did. I'm not a big Morris fan but the guy can play. But he's not the pass blocker that Zeke ALREADY IS just entering the league. I don't like Morris as our lead back but I get excited about the thought of him either coming in for someone that gets hurt or sharing carries with another back and a young one at that.

I love Morris for us. We're not even seeing yet what the accumulation of those big backs can do to a defense over the course of a whole game. Elliott's a fairly big guy, too. With our OL and if we're running the ball a lot, nobody's going to want to play Dallas too often.

It is just preseason but its really difficult to deny that hes making all the throws, hes calm under pressure and makes excellent decisions. His tools cant be doubted. If we cant develop this kid, we cant develop anyone.

Totally agree that if Prescott hits, that saves you assets in the near future that can be used on defense.

And that's all i'm saying. I like how he looks. I don't care that his QB rating is perfect. Its how he looks. How controlled he looks. He looks like a veteran. He just looks the part and to find that in the 4th round.........

I would think the next few drafts would have to be. You have a QB, a RB....maybe you look at a receiver? But you have a offensive line. Tight ends.....you can't draft anyone else for offense lol. Not with a high pick anyway unless its a incredible receiver. Otherwise, this defense will be rebuild hopefully sooner rather than later.

Definitely a WR but I think as long as Dez is here, you don't necessarily have to take a WR really high in the draft. You can find quality in the 2nd and 3rd rounds IMO.

Unless of course someone falls to you say in the first that is just so high on your board, you have to take him.

This is something that has bothered me since we hit on Romo. Not having to use any resources to get him is invaluable, yet we have wasted it for most of his career.

Hopefully Dak can be that guy and we are in the same position. If that happens, I will say I do feel more comfortable with our FO finally taking advantage of not having to use huge resources for a QB.

It very well could be if Prescott is really this good and Smith comes back and is that Top 5 talent people thought pre-injury. Even if Collins and Tapper are just so-so, if you get studs in Elliott, Prescott and Smith............ the draft is a home run.

I'll say something blasphemous that was also mentioned by someone else in the game thread. Watching Morris out there and how great our offense already is and can be, did we need Elliott at 4?

Commence fire.

Well this really depends on how good Zeke actually is in the NFL game.

He does have alot more talent than any back we have currently and also Murray. A good back behind this line and with our offensive balance will look very good. A great back in the same situation, well, could drive this team to greatness and rings.

Could it be that in one single draft...

They got their future quarterback and runningback?

I know its only two preseason games and Im not saying he takes over this season or next.

However, hes going to get better. This guy has a high learning curve. Didnt play around in school, either. In his five years at Mississippi State, got his Master's Degree.

I saw Dez on the sidelines joking with Ezekiel Elliott. I think Dez sees it too, already has rapport with Dak.

Cant wait to see Zeke next week.

I think this is going to be an important season in Cowboy history.
The potential of this draft is still sky high. We could get some serious contributors that's for sure.

I don't agree with your sentiment, but I'll give you a like for the deadpan humor...

You won't be saying that after you see him.

He's going to be s great player. But I think Morris is probably a 1400 yard/6 TD player in this offense. How much better can Elliott be to justify that pick?

Then look at the LB and S corps and think what we could have done with that draft capital.

He has surprised a lot of people so far. I do think he has benefited from getting time with the first team while other QBs havent, but hes clearly comfortable spreading the ball around and making quick decisions with his reads. Its funny hes getting compared to Russell Wilson, but he does have a similar playing style.

Fair question. Rookie passers can look one way now and something completely different in two weeks, two months, or whatever. I wouldn't blame anyone for being encouraged with this kid's performance, but until he's faced an NFL defense that has had time to prepare and actually game-plan for him, he remains a curiosity and nothing more.

We have seen way too many preseason success stories go by the wayside once the bullets begin to fly as well as plenty of slow starters experience that light-bulb moment later on. Also, Dak's arrow relative to those other rookies points really high, but the sample size and obvious preseason conditions only tell us so much.

How our first-year QB measures up against Wentz and Goff doesn't really interest me. The bar should be functional NFL quarterback. Can they be developed into that? Early returns indicate we just might have the guy. But it's very early. Hasn't really even begun yet.
