Could Witten be on the trading block?

I was as shocked as anyone else on this board when it came out that Jerry had Witten on the trading block to get Peterson.

When exactly did this "come out"??

Someone might have mentioned it as blind speculation (like this thread) but I'd bet anything no one ever confirmed it.

I think the facts are mixed up here.

I seem to recall Dallas mentioned regarding Calvin Johnson and a deal with Detroit.

I think Witten's name was mentioned by the Lions and that was the end of the discussion.

You are right Stash. It was Calvin Johnson, not Peterson, my mistake.

Disclaimer: This is not a rumor or confirmation, just purely for discussion purposes.

During last year’s draft, Jerry was willing to trade TE Jason Witten in a package deal to move up and draft Adrian Peterson. It is not out of the realm of imagination that he may be persuaded to dangle Witten in front of another GM’s eye again.

Examine the possibilities: Detroit doesn’t need anymore WR’s, but they sure could use a TE of Witten’s caliber to work the middle of the field and free up the WR’s. Jerry could do an even swap for Roy Williams and wouldn’t have to give up any draft picks.

Cincinnati could definitely use a Jason Witten if disgruntled Chad Johnson wants out. It would add a new dimension to the Bengals offense and give Palmer another weapon and safety net to pass to.

In both Detroit and Cincinnati’s case, they would still get a probowl caliber player and another dangerous option in the passing game. Dallas certainly has the capability of making this happen. Fasano is no Witen but he is good enough to start and get the job done with Curtis as the #2 TE. The Cowboys also have TE Martellus Bennett of Texas A&M schedule for a visit to Valley Ranch. He is currently projected as a first day pick.

In another scenario, I could envision Jerry trading up with either Miami or Oakland with a package deal including Witten, a first round pick, and maybe another pick from next years draft to move up and Draft McFadden. Parcells would LOVE Witten in Miami and Oakland can use all the help they can get.

I don’t think either one trade will happen, but I do think Jerry would pull the trigger if he gets the opportunity.

Witten being dangled to move up last year? When did that get invented? I'd think that if that had ANY credence at all, it would have been a bit of a story.

Wow, just don't know where to start. Not realistic at all.

I just can't write any more without unfairly ripping into the OP.

Don't recall Witten ever being part of any deal last year. I don't even know if Jerry was trying to move up to get Adrian Peterson. The only discussions I recall was regarding the #2 spot for Calvin Johnson and even then I think they wanted Ware in return.

WG - you are correct....even Mickey verified that they wanted Ware, not Witten - thus Witten has never been on the trading block...

neither has Ware, for that matter, as Jerry said they would absolutely not consider it....

And as for the original topic of the post - any trading of elite, young, inexpensive, high character, inspirational players is absolutely preposterous...

Now this I remember. Jerry laughed at the idea. I've heard nothing about ever shopping Witten, acquiring Adrian P., and I pay attention.

I not only pay attention, I pay attention to you paying attention, and I have no memory of this as well.

It wasn't Witten, Jerry was trying to shop Jason Whitten. He got no takers.

I honestly cannot see what is so unrealistic about it. If we really are going to get a player like Roy Williams or Calvin Johnson, those teams are not going to accept a bag of peanuts for either one of those players. A few people are suggesting Carpenter, Spears, and even our Roy Williams but that would be dumb on the other teams part. I would say trading Witten for either one is more likely to be accepted, even though I already said that I don't think it would. Thanks for not ripping into me for bringing up something to talk about though.

I'm not ripping you but it's not happening and that thread was nothing more than mere speculation on the part of a Zoner.

I read the thread. It wasn't total speculation by a Zoner. It was speculation by Norm on the ticket and it was reported by trickblue, who's a mod.

So after reading the thread, I believe there was a potential trade on the table. And it was hosed, because the Lions wanted too much. Spags later said they wanted Ware.

That sounds about what I recall.

That idea is absurd. Where would the Cowboys get all of their free Golden Pickle Juice from?

I read it , and appreciate the leg work you took to get it and post it, but it says nothing about Adrian Peterson. My bad actually, because that's what I was responding to, the original post. Thanks.
