Not necessary. nyc said it, so it must be true. After all, it's on the internet. Can't be wrong if you read it on the internet. :)

Try NFL.com

They have all sorts of good stats.

Just found it

They are 27th in takeaways eekkk, wonder why the Boys are so low in this category.

We had 5 new starters on this defense, so it took a little while for the defense to gel.

I think you're seeing the real Dallas defense right now.

As an aside, take away the first two games of the season, while the defense was just finding their feet, and we're only allowing 14 points per game. :)

Points allowed is the most important stat of a defense and I agree with Hos it's followed by takeaways. If you can be near the top of the league in both of those catagories then you've got yourself a darn good defense and a darn good shot to win a whole lot of games.

I was about to post the same thing, but I thought the Cowboys were #2 in points allowed?

Agree they could be better, but it seems that they do not take as many gambles. Well disciplined. Stay in their lanes. Don't leave their assignments etc. Would love more turnovers (it is one of the most important stats in my opinion) but will take a sound defensive team like we have any day. I do not miss fullbacks gouging us for big gains over the middle or WR running free because we gambled wrong. Sorry if my original reply seemed a little terse. Thanks for looking it up. I was going to later today. Saved me the time.:)

I'm pretty sure the opposite is true. Wades defenses improve throughout the year. Not as you claimed.

Take a look at last year. Hell look really close at the Ravens game.

That's just interceptions.

Combining INTs with Fumbles Recovered we have 13 total takeaways, tied with the Commanders for dead last in the NFL.

I know most people are gauging defense by yds per game. But dont you think that this is a more important stat? We are currently #3 (16.5 ppg). The Patriots are at #2 at 16.4. We could be at #2 after tonight. I dont think Patriots will hold Saints under 16.4 points tonight but still think Patriots can win. Would you rather have a defense that give up fewest points or fewest yards?

If you're measuring defenses, you should look at defensive points allowed rather than total points allowed. Our defense ranks seventh --

1. New York Jets, 13.27 ppg
2. Pittsburgh Steelers, 13.45 ppg
3. New England Patriots, 14.3 ppg
4. Cincinnati Bengals, 14.55 ppg
5. Denver Broncos, 15.27 ppg
5. Minnesota Vikings, 15.27 ppg
7. Dallas Cowboys, 15.91 ppg
8. Washington Commanders, 16.36 ppg
9. Baltimore Ravens, 16.45 ppg
10. Indianapolis Colts, 16.73 ppg

This is the biggest reason why this December will be different. People want to point at the offense as the reason we've faded in Decembers - I heartily disagree. In past Decembers, since Romo tookover, the defense always seemed to go first - then in an attempt to overcompensate, the offense took more risks and paid the price. This year looks alot different. The defense is keeping the offense in games. That's how you win down the stretch.

well said.If our offense can score early in games then our defense is going to be more dominant as they might take some risks and force more turnovers.

i really believe that the defense is more conservative than they should because most of the games we were trailing and the defense did not want to take many chances.

The defense was in a similar position last year. We were looking strong going down the stretch but weren't able to finish.

Points allowed by far the best stat. Its hard to believe we are giving ip 16.5 per game.

That is Wade Phillips. It's a broken record with him. Like many guys (Peyton Manning, etc) some get over it. Hopefully, this will be Wade's year to get the monkey off his back. Which at the same time would get several monkey's off the Cowboys (no playoff wins since forever, folding in December, culmination of Romo's talent and leadership)

I agree with you, Adam. Points given up on offensive turnovers returned for TD's and special teams scores should not be included strictly for measuring the defense.

The fact that we move from #3 to #7 must mean that our offense and ST's aren't giving up as many points on turnovers and returns as the other teams that jump ahead of us. Is that a reasonable assumption?

Adam, would you happen to have the numbers for last year?

I've never seen this broken out like this, or at least I don't remember it. Last year I complained about all the special teams points and fumble and INT returns being counted against our defense.

Wonder why it seems the AFC holds most of the top 10 defenses, did the AFC suck for so long till after the year 2000 that they just drafted all the good players and now its showing.

Very nice info. I could get used to reading that stat updated on a weekly basis. ;)

As the Cowboys slid through last December, they had to play all four games against defenses that finished in the top 10 in this very stat, I'm sure. If not top 5.

Yes. We've allowed only one return touchdown. (The Steelers have allowed eight, and the Jets have allowed seven.)

However, we have given our opponents the ball inside our 20 several times, and that's almost as bad as a return TD.

This is so true...and obviously there have been other distractions and key injuries to mix in but everyone wants to blame Romo for bad Decembers when it is a team effort.
