You have to chose your battles and I like the fiscal path Jerry & Co. have chosen.

Free has missed a big part of training camp with a foot/ankle problem related to the 2 surgeries that he's had in the past 18 months. He was always a marginal player and now he is gimpy.

The premise of this thread is built on the bolded and underlined part. But that is opinion based and not based on fact. Bernadeau is closer to marginal than Free. So your assessment of Parnell excludes the coaching staff watched both of these players and made a decision. Frankly they could have signed Parnell at some point the previous off-season and ditched Free is this were the case. And found a bargain basement player.

I agree with your theory about the poor boy system and making decisions based on pocketbook.

But this is not the position on the team where they chose to not pay a player who produced. They had a top flight player they allowed to walk over money that was far and away more important to the team and Romo.

So your point hit the target, but missed the bull's eye by a great deal.

Why would you spend time reviewing a Jags-Lions preseason game?

This definitely proves you are related to Parnell.

Either a relative, stalker, or lover/ex lover.

Take your pick. If it's one of the latter two, I feel bad for Parnell.

Meanwhile, I just reviewed the Jags-Lions game from last night and Parnell was terrific. He was easily their best OL in that game. He played the 1st half and into the 3rd quarter. His pass protection was excellent and he was bullying people in the running game.

Weems has not been as bad as many people claim, but he needs a lot of work to be ready to protect Romo if Free's foot/ankle gives out on him or his play just declines below acceptable levels.

The Cowboys for some reason gave Free 5M per year on a new contract.

Jax gave Parnell 6.4M per year (Yes, more was guaranteed, but if he plays out the contract it's the annual average that counts against the cap, not the guarantee).

Parnell is 3 years younger than Free and Parnell is healthy.

Now Romo's health could be in danger and the Cowboys saved a whopping 1.4M per year against the cap.

Still valuing contracts and ignoring guaranteed money. smh

@xwalker Yeah, it could happen like you say. Parnell could be deja vu all over again just like WR Laurent Robinson (?). Remember that WR JAX signed? Many rued the day he left.

It could also happen because we didn't sign Dwayne Harris or RB Murray. Parnell eventually became a good backup swing tackle here. The Cowboys molded and shaped him into something decent and Parnell grew into a good backup swing tackle. He was never anything more than that here. He couldn't crack the starting line-up. He got offered big money to go elsewhere. Good for him. There was no guarantee he would be better than Free. And for all we know, Weems could become a better backup swing tackle than Parnell ever was.

Patriots fans were quite upset when the team ditched Mankins to save money. How'd that turn out? The Eagles are having a fire sale this year and dumping players to save money. All teams have made financial decisions concerning certain players. We could play the what-if game all day.

The Jaguars ran 27 times for 68 yards last night - a whopping 2.5 yards per carry. Their long carry was a 12 yard scramble by Blake Bortles.

And your takeaway was that Parnell bullied guys in the run game? Agenda much?

I'm worried more about our Running backs picking up the blitz than the Lineman. Murray was good at it. Oh, I forgot, can't mention his name anymore.....

This season may not go as planned or as we hope it does. It's unlikely though it's because of not resigning Jeremy Parnell.

We are rueing Parnell now? Wasn't he expendable last season when we got Martin, even Collins?

If Dallas misses the playoffs, it will not be because of Jeremy.

I would like to see Dallas get a shinny new RB , new and better swing tackle, and a Mallet QB

And by being under the cap and/or having financial maneuverability, they can replace any key injury loss.

Still plenty of time to massage the roster

I thought this was going to be a post about lack of a high level TB.

Then I saw it was about Parnell.

LOL.

If not related he has a super sized man crush on him... Does not seem healthy.

While I liked Parnell a lot I don't think it was about saving money. I think it was that this coaching staff always liked Free better.

Your salary numbers are skewed to try and prove your point. According to Over the cap, Parnell will count 8 million against the cap this year and Free is at 3 million. I do not think that Parnell is worth this much.

For accuracy's sake, Doug Free is actually counting $6.98M against the Dallas Cowboys salary cap this season.

The $3M you cited is for Free's active base salary ($1.5M) and $1.5M in signing bonus proration.

There is also $3.98M in dead money this season from Free's last contract that voided during the off-season.

I would have preferred to see Jermey Parnell get an extension during last season, but the team opted not to go that route.

Instead, a new OT was drafted in the third round, Chaz Green.

I don't know if Green will do anything this season or never come off PUP.

The other drafted OT, Laurence Gibson, has been making strides lately and could be one to watch next year in training camp.

We'll see how Free fares this season, I will admit concern regarding his 16 game availability.

It will be a year to year deal after this season.
