6. Cleveland Browns: I’m selecting Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert. Conventional wisdom says TE is not a position you take in the top ten. Two tight ends have been taken in the top ten in this decade, both at number six: Kellen Winslow in 2004, and Vernon Davis in 2006. I have written extensively about the increased value of the “Joker” TE in today’s NFL, and have talked to many defensive coordinators who have told me that matching up to “12” personnel (one back, two tight ends, and two wide receivers) is a real problem. Eifert is the most athletic TE in this draft class. I saw him split outside the numbers many times, and beat corners on vertical routes. Two things to keep in mind: Rob Chudzinski was the OC in Cleveland in 2007 when Winslow had 82 catches for 1,106 yards (the Browns won the AFC North that season), and new OC Norv Turner is a master at utilizing the TE, most recently Antonio Gates, but you can go all the way back to Jay Novacek with the Cowboys in the early 1990s.

This from Greg Cosell pretty much sums up the thought process on running a base 2 TE set in todays NFL. It puts your offense in the best position to succeed because it is the hardest to defend. Before you bring up Hanna, he blocks more like a WR than a TE.

Ya it is silly when the center snaps the ball, and rushers are suddenly in Romo's face with no time to thinik. Sure is silly. But we have 5 more picks !!!! And solid free agent possibilities (like the solid free agent possibilities we signed last year for the OL) !!!!!! Your right, Romo will be eating the field silly, pretty often.

One more piece of sugar and you will be throwing the shirt over your head and screaming for TP.

Ha, yup, my point went completely over your head.

And right into the dumpster where your point can find equal intelligence.

Ha, perhaps you should improve your grammar before discussing intelligence.

This would be a classic Cowboys move: Clear holes in offensive line, at safety and defensive line. One of the best Tight Ends in the league on the team (admittedly in the back end of his career), a late round pick in Hanna starting to develop into a number two...and BLAM Jerry picks a tight end because he's shiny, fun to watch and will score us TDs when we're getting blown out after getting manhandled in the trenches and gutted up the middle defensively.

Actually seeing as we have only drafted 1 TE in the first round in 20+ years since he has owned the Dallas Cowboys it would NOT be a classic cowboys move.

But keep going.:D

Come on, guys.

We're weakest in the middle, both O & D, and we don't have the luxury of ignoring that while we go for the best offensive weapon available (BOWA).

It's just not our year for that.

You have to understand that what WE might want has no bearing of what the Cowboys are thinking about doing.

I am ashamed to admit it, but I am currently throwing regular season results to the wind and hoping they draft Vaccaro just for the comedy that will ensue here. :D

Yes, but that is the kind of scenario we seem to be staring in the face. The choice may come down to Eifert and Vaccaro and there is a big difference between the best TE in the class and the next best while at safety I'm not sure you can make that claim.

Good post.
