Jaguars Sign Glenn; Release Reyes

09/03/07

The Jacksonville Jaguars today signed 14-year veteran cornerback Aaron Glenn and released guard Tutan Reyes. Glenn spent the last two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before being released in final cuts on September 1.

Glenn, 35, played in all 16 games for the Cowboys last season with one start and started their postseason contest against Seattle. The 5-9, 183-pound cornerback recorded 20 tackles and one interception along with three kickoff returns for 24 yards. His interception extended his streak of 12 consecutive seasons with an interception which is tied for the NFL’s longest active stretch along with Ty Law.

The 14th-year veteran has started 171 of his 196 career games after being drafted by the New York Jets with the 12th overall selection in the 1994 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M. He has tallied 635 career tackles, 40 interceptions and five interceptions returned for touchdowns. The Humble, Texas native also has 115 career kickoff returns for 2,622 yards (22.8 avg.) and one touchdown. He will wear jersey No. 23.

There goes the theory that he will be back.

Which is why I'm SHOCKED 99% of Zoners here are going bananas over Glenn's cut.
I don't agree at all. Parcells loved zones and didn't want to blitz any more than absolutely necessary. Parcells is the guy who wanted the bigger (like at every position) corners who could tackle well. Wade wants to blitz and when you do that, you necessarily have fewer guys to cover. The only way to compensate is to play more man-to-man.

Problem is, good man cover corners are rarer than hen's teeth. You just can't find them this time of year.

Glenn was only 5'9, FWIW.

Prepare thyselves, fellow Zoners. After the recent announcement of Glenn's signing in Jacksonville, Eduncan will be arriving momentarily with a few "I'm happy as a clam" and a couple of videos to boot. Brace thyselves, I say. Brace!!!

i don't understand the logic here. Wasn't AG one of the two corners that "stepped up" in the MIN game? If Newman doesn't play on Sunday night, that means Reeves starts at CB and Nate Jones plays the slot. If I were the Giants, I would just use 3 and 4 WR formations and attack the Steve Smith/Nate Jones matchup. Uh it feels like 2004 all over again..

the thing that has always cracked me up about the media and the fans when it comes to parcells style of defense is that everyone missed maybe his most important reasoning.

All the writers and talk show hosts said over and over you dont know where the 4th guy is coming from. Yeah but the reason he played it and said it many times and no one ever followed him up on it was the ability to drop 8 players back, that was more important to him than hiding the 4th rusher.

And doing that with the 8 called for a lot of zone. I dont ever remember him having an obsession with size with corners though, I think they just needed to be smart, use good technique and not get caught out of position. I think it is pretty tough to go and find a group of corners with a specified size.

That fact doesn't refute CL's (correct) contention that Bill was after big corners who could handle big receivers. He mentioned when he signed AH that he was concerned about the Giants Buress in particular. And the aborted attempt to ressurrect Marcus Coleman's career was done in that vein.

Bill was also initailly super high on Pete Hunter - crowing he could make him into another Coleman (in his prime was a perect partner for the smaller Glenn ). Zim wisely demuured.

Glenn represented another tact - an attempt to get some vet savvy in the secondary, perhaps to mentor, and get back a bit of what was lost with Woody's field management. Plus Bill knew what he was getting with AG overall, having coached him before.

To me the failing of Tuna secondary wise was the lack of development of guys like Brooks and Reeves - with a first round pick at one corner and one in the saftey position, you expect the economics to be balanced out by home grown talent from the lower rounds. That didn't happen successfully enough - and in Cajun's thread I think this is what he's getting at with the 'every year same old thing' complaint.
