Cowboys - D.J. Swearinger Backup Safety option **Claimed by Tampa Bay**

He is a locker-room cancer and is a bad influence on some of the other players. I listen to Houston sports radio a lot and he is always doing something......on or off the field.

He pimped out his truck a few months ago and skipped the tab among many other things.

No thanks! His "talent" isn't there to take a risk on....

Called it back in his draft year. Personal foul machine and dirty player. Defenseless Receiver rule was going to put him out of the NFL if he couldn't control himself. Looks like he can't. Didn't want him then and that was with no knowledge of his personal behavior.

He had like problems at SC and they seem magnified now. He doesn't have the talent to stay on a team with that kind of nonsense.

Are they willing to play special teams, because this kid refuses to...

I would absolutely take a flyer if he would play ST.

Yes he would need to play ST. I don't know the details about what happened with that in Houston but that isn't gonna fly anywhere so hes gonna have to change his mind about that.

I wouldn't trade for him but I'd put in a waiver claim for him.

At the initial interview the expectations would be laid out for him and he'd be told that we have a very short leash for players who don't buy into doing things our way.

Reviewed the 2013 leaked board:

JJ Wilcox had a 3rd round grade #50th overall, 4th safety
Cowboys had DJ Swearinger with a 3rd round grade #65 overall, 5th safety
New Cowboy Keelan Johnson had a 5th round grade #92 overall, 7th safety
Former Cowboy Jakar Hamilton had a 5th round grade #102 overall, 8th safety

Good post.

It's always difficult to know about a player that just didn't get along with another coaching staff. It would be a free look if he got him on waivers.

He was better in coverage in college than is being reported. He was a better coverage Safety in college than Church.
and ryan leaf was much better in college as a QB.

No thank you. He isn't even that much of an upgrade over guys like Heath... and Heath would run through a burning house to tackle a punt returner in a pre-season game.

Did you think about this statement before posting? Thousands of college players were better in college than in the NFL. How is that relevant?

Have you watched his game footage?

I wanted DJ in the draft, if he was there later.

But for the most part, the only type of players with issue that Garrett allows on the team are normally ones don't hurt the locker room. I still don't think some quite get this.

The only possible exception on the current roster is Ro McClain; if he for some reason loses his love the game again. That'd be damaging internally.

Guys like Dez, Hardy and Gregory have a huge passion for the game and are great teammates.

So if he thinks DJ can be a good teammate, give full effort, and not whine about playing time....and also if McClay and Marinelli like his skills--then, and only then would they make a stab at him.

Not since he was in the draft. I watched some of his work before that draft. Only so-so then.

I haven't watched any of him at Houston.

Look... Dallas has brought in Hardy and they've brought in Gregory. Both of those guys have some issues but neither one of them has ever been blamed for not doing everything the coaches ask of them, or for not listening to the coaches. Their problems aren't in football or with coaches. Both of them love the game and play it the right way. Neither of them would walk out on a meeting, IMO, and both will have no problem with special teams. Hardy was even a gunner at 290 for Carolina when he was just coming in the league.

Both Gregory and Hardy play football the way Garrett wants it played and neither will have a problem with their position coaches, IMO.

Garrett will work with guys like Hardy and Gregory who are super talented and who's problems are off the field. I don't think Garrett will want to work with a guy who is an average talent, doesn't want to play special teams and walks out on meetings. I just don't see it happening.

It is difficult enough to blend 53 personalities into one team when you don't have schmucks who over rate their own abilities on the team. He doesn't bring one thing to the team that they don't already have... except for a hate for special teams.

Just my $0.02

It's relevant to the discussion because you keep saying, "he was a better coverage safety in college than Church." I think his intention was to highlight how irrelevant his college experience is to this discussion. Kind of like your response.

I'm just curious if anyone has reviewed his Houston game footage. I can't really judge him without reviewing it. I don't put much stock into media reports. He probably does have some character issues but I would check into myself if I were the Cowboys and not just go on the rumors. Houston has a new HC and they like to make statements by finding a relatively high profile player to cut. He'll be a free agent by the time that HC has made a dent on that team.

Swearinger came to Houston in 2013 when Wade Phillips was the DC and interim Head Coach. We know from experience that Wade can't handle a locker-room and even average players will go off the reservation with Wade running the show.

If one of you guys have studied his NFL game footage, then lets see a detailed analysis of it; otherwise, some one-liners are meaningless fodder.

Mincey had those questions and he came in and became a team leader in his first year. Some guys could be just poor fits with their coaching staff. I'm not sure but is that Texan's staff the same one that drafted him?

True about Wade...

If he had played well at Houston, I don't think they would have cut him, IMO. And, if he had played well and they still cut him... then his locker room issues were likely even bigger than we are hearing.

Either way, I don't want him within a stones throw of Valley Ranch.

Maybe if Hardy and Gregory weren't already brought in, they'd take a look at him. With those two already being added... they're not going to add another character question without him having talent that is worth the trouble. That, I'm pretty sure Swearinger doesn't have, even without watching film of him at Houston.

I understand why you say can't hurt to take a look... I just don't think they're going to do it and I don't blame them.
