More an indictment of the rest of the DL than anything else. A direct result of the Russian roulette this FO had played with our DL

It's not like they haven't tried.

They've traded up.

They've taken the talented guy that fell.

They've signed a guy who's been dominate at the position.

Yep. We did it with Tyrone Crawford. He flashed a little potential and we wanted to lock him up to a long-term deal before he became a free agent and would demand mega money. Buy low. Problem is, his stock never got very high and we ended up overpaying him. Guys you do pay are guys who are able to become elite players while on their rookie contracts. Pretty much guys like Dak, Zeke, Beard, Tyron and Zack. You pay those guys. The Demarcus Lawrence's of the world though, you only give them a second contract if it's cheap (like what we did with Claiborne). I hope we don't try to do the same thing with Irving. He's flashing potential but he still needs to prove he's worth the money.
Agreed, and luckily with Irving, we didn't draft him and he was an UFA coming out before we signed him from KC's PS. With 2 more years of (relatively) cheap player control before actually having to extend him, I'd hope that if we do pay him he will have earned it by more than just a couple of flashes.

People want to say that overpaying Crawford is 'no biggie' and that the Cowboys 'can do whatever they want in free agency', and meanwhile we'll watch Ron Leary walk out the door...
You are assuming that Leary wants to remain a Cowboy. Everything I've read and heard is that he doesn't.

So he may walk out the door but there isn't anything the Cowboys can do about it unless they want to tag him.

Don't screw up with Iving, I get that we have him for 1 more year...don't let him leave. One of my favorites has been Leary the last few years, I'm still bracing myself for that news..

We have Irving for 2 more years. He is an ERFA (exclusive rights free agent) this year and an RFA next offseason. No reason to sign him long term this year. He will have to play out on his tender, sit, or be traded. See how he progresses this season. If he pans out, tender him next offseason and try to sign him long term.

Mainly because adding a handful of sacks, four or so is not going to make a better defense.

Arizona led the league in sacks. I didn't see that making a real difference.

We need better pass rushers. We need better players. It is not as simple as to bean count sacks and think that means beating a quality playoff QB like Rodgers.

Honestly, I think we would be better served if Marinelli just went away.

He is so used to getting his own job security by denying talent, it is sad.

All of his defenses not in Tampa Bay have been talent poor in two key areas.

The DL and at safety.

Eventually, people will understand he is not a genius. He needs elite talent in both of those areas.

Otherwise, he is playing games everywhere else.

I am very very ready for him to retire.

Here's to hoping they get a little more talented this offseason.

Irving still has two years of RFA after this next one. There is no reason to give him a lucrative deal. ***** about Crawford if you must but he signed his deal after 4 years of service time.

We need to add people that can consistently beat 1v1. You need a few to mount a meaningful pass rush. I don't think we have any.

In many cases, you need one.

A pass rush by committee doesn't work. There has to be an alpha.

It affects a lot of things.

Our problem is we have a lot of the same little try hard orphans.

Just like an OL needs a leader, who is our's on the DL?

Tyrone Crawford?

LOL

I think every Cowboy FA needs to sit down away from the team, and ask if its worth the money. Than any FA coming here, ask themselves the question. I think we have sown and proven ot he league we are not serious contenders, if our own FO wont accept that, than I think the players need to take a page from Ware, if you want to win, if you want to contend, leave Dallas now.

I'd have to see that information. Nothing I've read says that he's determined to leave. More like resigned to leaving.

So he may walk out the door but there isn't anything the Cowboys can do about it unless they want to tag him.

They could pay him what other teams would. But they won't. In part because they can't afford to.

Thanks, I didn't know that. Learning all the time. He's just turning into something special, IMO.

It'd be great if the staff could hit the jackpot on another player at DE like they did at QB last year. Considering the fact that we'll be drafting from the 28th spot, it's highly questionable if we'll be in line for an elite DE prospect that late in the 1st round without moving up. Acquiring an elite pass rusher from vet via FA might offer some hope for help, if our FO were willing to consider doing so. Evidently, they're not. :(

Leary knows that he may have a limited time line and also knows that he has earned a cash in. The Cowboys don't have a thing to do with the over riding picture of his own future years.

Us fans love what he adds to an offensive picture...but his agent probably is telling him a completely different story line. Wonder how many players not to the top cash flows, show loyalty to team if cash flow is a real potential?

See any disgruntled pass rushers on the market place for this off season? He had better duplicate what Jerry brought in via San Francisco, once upon a day...

That'd be a shot in the arm, that's for sure! If we were so fortunate as to find a Haley clone, there'd be dancing in the streets, no doubt. I would imagine some sort of a trade might be the quickest way to resolve our pass rush expeditiously. Perhaps a Romo deal might possibly be struck to tend to that? Pardon me while I dare dream of such things . . .
