NFL scouts comments from Bob McGinn:

5. TYLER SMITH, Tulsa (6-4 ½, 327, 5.04, 1-2): Another third-year sophomore. Started two of four games as a true freshman before redshirting. “Natural left tackle,” said one scout. ”This guy can pull and trap. Great technician. He can bend his knees and move his feet and slide. He was 21 on April 3. At the second level he was totally amazing. About as tough a guy as I saw. I don’t know how Tulsa got him. Only thing I didn’t like: he wants to hurt people. Sometimes when they do that, they get holding penalties (12 in 2021). He just smashes guys down and officials call a hold.” His high school in Fort Worth was small and fielded losing teams, reducing his exposure and college offers. “When you have the toughness he plays with and his makeup, there’s not an offensive line coach that would not want to work with him,” said a second scout. “He might have more upside than all these guys. You’re getting a really good athlete that can play guard or tackle. He’s long (34 arms). He’s a violent player. It’s hard for those guys to fail, but he has to clean up a lot of stuff from a fundamental standpoint. If you moved him to defense you’d be talking about a high-end nose tackle.” Made 21 starts at LT. Wonderlic of 30. “He’s a left tackle but I thought he was a long, long ways away,” said a third scout. “He’s just so out of control and so raw. Just sloppy. The big guy tries but the technique’s way off. He lunges, he’s top-heavy. I don’t see the top athletic ability that some others may see.”
The scout "in bold at the bottom of the post" said it best and correctly!

Trash pick regardless of his size. Not excited about a penalty ridden OT project from the AAC.

Oh the pick is risky but making stuff up to criticize him is silly. He’s not too tall to play OG.

Frankly that’s where they should stick him and not worry about him ever playing LT.

This team wasn’t going to take LB in round 1. Linderbaum and Johnson are definitely players that I would have considered before Smith. But they got they guy they wanted. He was 1 of the 30 player visits had a private workout so they really liked the player. This pick should not be a surprise. He’s been linked to this team for a while.
Great insight

They wanted to fix their run game, Tyler does that. Tge added bonus is with development he could potentially replace Tyron at LT. There weren’t any other later Guards who have his potential nor the ability to legitimately play left tackle in the future.
How does he fix the run game? First and 20 sucks as much as 2nd and 9.

I have read nothing anywhere that projects him to G. But feel free to make stuff up.

Jerry said one of the teams that wanted to trade up with them, they found out later that Smith would have been the pick.
They declined 3 trades as they did not want to lose out on Smith.
I have a friend who married a real ugly girl. He said he had to rush to meet her before other guys. Everyone was thinking to themselves that he was the only fool in line.

Jurgens could be a day one starter.

Doubt we’d take him. He’s likely to go in the 2nd or 3rd.

Don't think they feel as bad about Biadasz as some fans do. I think that's one reason Linderbaum was not a consideration. He's strictly a center and the team doesn't think we need one.

At least he may be coachable. Had a 30 on the Wonderlic. Not super excited about the pick, but good size and long arms. Slide him inside at LG and coach him up. Could be good. Maybe grasping at straws, but we have four months to make him into a LG.
