Had Barr declared early in 2012, he probably would’ve gone third over Dion Jordan to Miami in what many thought was a weak draft. But this draft isn’t quite that way. Barr’s athleticism is attractive, but Buffalo’s Khalil Mack has athleticism and nasty and a full complement of “wrecking shop” skills.

South Carolina edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney is freakish and he DID get doubled/chipped most of the season. With three top QBs, a couple of solid prospects at tackle and the aforementioned edge rushing freaks, Barr should fall behind them due to the problems outlined above. If it’s been a little shocking to see Barr’s name take a hit lately, now you know -- if you didn’t already, of course.

There is no point comparing Barr to Mack or Clowney because Barr is the only one that has any chance to be available outside of the top10.

I can't tell if that was meant to be serious or not...

If you are nose to nose with the OT then you could be responsible for the 3 and 5 gap as well as the 7 gap. That's not a common assignment for one player but it does occur.

Never have I saw, nor even heard of that being done. You have 8 gaps to cover on defense(9 if you consider an E gap wide of the TE side) and 11 players on defense, all of which have run responsibilities. Asking one player to cover nearly half of those is a pretty impressive assignment. Typically gaps are as follows
A - two gaps between center and guards
B - Two gaps between guards and tackles
C - Two gaps outside of tackle
D - Two wide areas outside the tackle box

In order to have a three gap assignment a DE lined up over the weak side tackle would have to take responsibility for anything outside of the guards outside shoulder, or nearly half the field. In a 4-3 weakside typically what you will see is the nose tackle/1 technique taking the A gap, The end playing either the B or C gap with the weakside backer taking either the B or C, whichever the End doesn't take. Corner takes the wide D. The free safety pending the scheme will often not have a gap assigned to them, but are expected to make a read and play the whole field.

Strong side your middle backer takes the A, 3 technique tackle takes the B, and the C or D is taken by either the End or Strong backer, pending where you have your players aligned. Corner plays the wide run, and once again the safety makes a read and gets to the ball.

Of course pending lineup/ play call these responsibilities change, but in no way can I see covering three gaps with one player. Not only would a player be expected to cover a large area of the field, but he would most likely be double teamed as well.

Not what I'm talking about. Basically an end playing a two gap with containment on the near outside.

Two gaps with contain? I can buy that. I think that's a little different than having a gap, but I may be nitpicking a bit as well.

sometimes I think scouts and coaches get caught up too much on exactly where they think a guy should be playing. Instead of just looking at the player and figuring out if he can REALLY PLAY no matter what the position.
