Cowboys DT Stephen Paea Will Retire at Age 29***Merged***

I haven’t seen this mentioned since Wednesday so here it is... delete if already posted.

Cowboys DT Stephen Paea Will Retire at Age 29

Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Stephen Paea is retiring after seven seasons in the NFL at the age of 29.

On Thursday, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett told reporters Paea is retiring due to a knee injury that is "preventing him from playing at the level he wants." Paea missed Week 5 due to the injury.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Paea informed the Cowboys on Wednesday of the decision.

He's made about 15 million in his career. If he had decent financial advice, and if his spending habits are low key, then he should be in good shape.

Can't get on a guy with an injury history wanting to get out while he's still relatively healthy.

Kudos to him.

The core of this team won 13 games last year. They have done it before ergo they can do it again. The talent has not fallen off in less than one year.

I know you're frustrated-- but take a deep breath and do what Parcells does: wait until Thanksgiving and see who this team is then before passing judgment.

"Last year" - Keep hanging onto that.

And apparently the talent has dropped off. It clearly has.

The offensive line was the engine that drove the team's success winning 13 games last year. They were far and away the best OL in the NFL and possibly the best single OL the league has seen in the past 5-6 years.

This year that OL has dropped in performance to being just an average OL....

As long as the OL continues top perform average, it is not reasonable to expect this team will achieve anything near a 13-3 record.

The experience dropped off but the talent is probably better.

These players will be better than the the ones they replaced but they need a little more experience.
Lewis
Awuzie
La'el
Woods (Replaced Wilcox as the 3rd Safety).

DT McClain was good early but faded.

Leary is missed but Cooper looked really good in the Packers game and has a lot of physical ability.

Unfortunately, "the core" of this team isn't here anymore. And every piece they've put in to replace that lost "core" has been lesser than the player they've replaced. Every one has been worse, not better, save for maybe Collins over Free.

Really-- so to you the core of this team was Claiborne, Carr, wilcox, Church, McClain, and Leary?

Not Dak, zeke, dez, frederick, Tyron, Witten, Lee, D Law, both Collins?

Just want to make sure that's your final answer here.

Not sure if you are aware of this or not-- but good NFL teams lose games. The mighty NE Patriots stand one whole game ahead of us in the standings right now.

There are plenty of reasons why we lost the 3 games we lost this year-- but "the whole roster is junk" is not one of them.

It's clear we have reached diminishing returns here in this discussion... go in peace

Yeah, they were a significant part of the "core" responsible for 13-3 last year.

I know some people would like to minimize their contributions in an effort to feel better, but that's not the truth.

I will give credit to everyone who contributed to that cprecord and not try to cherry-pick the names who just happen to still be here.

Think about it.

How good do Carr and Claiborne look right now compared to the failure of Nolan Carroll? Cut after less than two games, with $4 million wasted?

Who wouldn't take Barry Church over what Jeff Heath is doing right now?

Who wouldn't pay Terell McClain what Washington paid him over the misses of Thornton and Paea?

The sad fact is that every one of the players the Cowboys felt they could easily replace is missed. Across the board. Every player brought in was worse, not better.

Such a downgrade that three of them, for various reasons, aren't even here at all anymore.

This same "core" that you want to point at has already lost as many games out of 5 as they did all of last year with the guys you now want to try to minimize. All results showing otherwise.

But I do remember quite clearly you saying how much better the D would be with all the new faces. Fess up or no?

I remember a lot of people, me included, saying eventually the defense would be better, but there would be growing pains with so much change. We have the growing pains, now let's see if they get better.

I didn't think he'd be great by any stretch, but I did say Heath would be an adequate replacement, and I was 100% wrong. 100%.

Yes, and the Patriots have had a clear drop off. Their D isn't looking great, nice comparison. Even though it's always funny when people go straight to the Patriots - all we need now is a future HOF coach and GOAT QB. Great comparison, that won't be a failure...

And I have asked you a few times, name me these improved players on our team. I will wait.

Two rookies (one who can't stay healthy, the other gave up a game winning TD), Collins hasn't been all that good, and Woods has done little with his limited snaps.

Are you arguing Carroll is better than Carr or Claiborne? Heath better than Church? How are the players that were playing at a high level last year, how are they playing this season? Show me a position that is an improvement. The only position that seems to be better is DE, and that's due to Lawrence. Outside of that, nearly across the board, we have downgraded or play has slipped.

This team is a joke and could spiral out of control fast.

I said more talent, less experience.

That translates to worse now, better later.

FYI, that TD was on Heath not the CB. Based on that coverage, Heath should have doubled the WR that caught the TD.

They were not going to get better by staying the same. Keeping players like Carr and Church would just delay the process of replacing them with better players.

Even last years defense would have struggled without Lee and Hitchens.

You are changing the goal posts to try and rope me into an argument.

You said the roster is junk from top to bottom-- I disagreed, and still do-- but I don't need to defend my belief in this roster as I tend to wait for awhile before passing judgment.

Ask me what I think after Thanksgiving. For right now-- they get the benefit of the doubt from me since they won 13 games last year and very easily could be 4-1 right now.

Keeping those guys after they broke down vs GB would have been keeping the status quo. They all reached their ceiling and were soaking up needed cap space.

The FO went with youth and it will take 2-3 years for the players to mature to know what we have there.

At that point-- we can start to make some comparisons.
