Cowboys DT Stephen Paea Will Retire at Age 29***Merged***

Could have tried to re-sign Terrell McClain with the money that went to these scrubs. But when you build the team like this, you have to eventually pay all your 1st rounders so we have to be very cheap in other areas.

Wonder if this is coming from a defense meeting? Or maybe the defensive players just saw the writing on the wall...

I'll be honest, I am somewhat surprised they haven't hit the scrap heap for some LB depth. I guess they are just banking on Hitchens being fine and Wilson and Smith can add situational stuff.

From Schefter on twitter right now:

Cowboys’ DT Stephen Paea told Dallas coaches today that he is retiring, per source.

Crazy, I know ...
Dude was like... "Its Marinelli or me.." Aight.. Peace out.

I hope this season shows the staff it’s time to get serious about defense. No more low end signings. Draft and spend money on defense for once!!

I mean I hear what you're saying, but they devoted significant draft assets to the D over the last few years.

Lewis Neal.

Good on Paea for retiring on his own terms. Anyone that is upset or bothered by a man choosing his health over playing longer should re-evaluate being a human being.

I don't think many are upset at Paea. The ire seems to be directed at the front office and how their offseason FA plan seems to be melting away in only 5 weeks of the NFL season.

Richard Ash-DT on the practice squad.

Joey Ivie available too.

Along those lines............ did anything come out about what they plan to do with Jarron Jones when they signed him? Leave him at OT or move him back to DT? He's listed as an OT on the Cowboys site so I guess that's their initial plan.

McClain played one full season for the Cowboys... Injured during the others and played little.

I'm not sure why folks are busting on the organization about this (Paea).

Busting on them for Carroll I get.

But on this? A guy retiring because he has a chronic knee problem?

Seems excessive to me.

The guy was at best an average player. An average player with a bad knee.

Makes the release of Cedric Thornton an even more suspect move. The Cowboy front office had a very bad offseason in terms of roster building.

I can only describe this organization's offseason as arrogant.

From Mike Fisher on Twitter:

ALERT: Nolan Carroll officially out. LB Justin March-Lillard is in. Retiring Paea? Source tells me, 'His knee just didn't let him be him'
