I'm not sure why folks are busting on the organization about this (Paea).

Busting on them for Carroll I get.

But on this? A guy retiring because he has a chronic knee problem?

Seems excessive to me.

Paea's knee issues are not something new. He's had them for a few seasons now.

Paea was essentially the solution to the 1 tech issue they had when they released Thornton and didn't bring back an oft injured McClain.

So if your plan to address the 1 tech is just hit the scrap pile again and bring in a guy with bad knees and amazingly, he can't play anymore because of his knees, I think that warrants some criticism of the front office.

At a macro level, it once again highlights that this notion any Joe Blow can play 1 tech in this system needs some re-evaluation.

My problem with them keeping Paea is that they KNEW his knee was iffy at the time.

Marrinelli has no excuses; after 4 years virtually every single Defensive player was someone he wanted or signed off on.

All coaches have blind spots; Marrineeli's refusal to think that having a really good 1 Tech could make a difference is a big one.

The trouble with Thornton is that he wasn't very good within this system.

Regardless if they had kept him or not, he still would not have been very good in this system.

Like, every other Cowboy fan, I'm anxious to see how they handle that spot #1 DT.

I agree with that. Thornton was likely a better 3-4 DE than DT.

But the fact is, they knew they had a 1 tech problem and their solution was a garbage heap signing of a guy who was probably out there and cheap because of his knees. When that doesn't work out, I think it's perfectly fair to question the front office.

It's not like what've they had out there so far at the #1 DT spot has set the world on fire so far this season.

Could very well be the answer won't be found until the offseason.

Where's my 'like'?

Plus, can't build a defense in ONLY 7 years
Right?
On to the next off season

I read a lot of NFL stuff... I didn't see a thing in the offseason in relation to Paea's knee condition.

That's certainly not ideal.

They've long botched the 1 Tech because Marinelli seems to believe that any old joe schmoe can play there.

I don't agree. He's certainly had to do with players less than he'd like. I don't think we are that bad off. Crawford and Price can play in a traditional 4 man DL. But we are in 3 down linemen and pass rush rotation much more often. Irving and Crawford can play that package. You have Collins as well that can play a traditional 4-3 along with Crawford as well as Irving. All three can play 3, 4 pass rotation and 4 traditional. You've got enough rotational players to give you the packages you need. My guess is Ash is a good fit as well as Neal. I'm thinking one will get brought up. Not enough numbers for both but that's possible.

Saves us around 1.5m at least on the cap

Expected more but at least it was a cheap sign .......right guys?......not wasting picks and money on a Sheldon Richardson

Is Ash healthy?

The guy was at best an average player. An average player with a bad knee.

Makes the release of Cedric Thornton an even more suspect move. The Cowboy front office had a very bad offseason in terms of roster building.
Well.

Roster building using Martindale's defensive schemes is risky.

Nobody but him knows how to run it.

What happens when he leaves after this season?

Who is gonna step up and fix the defense?

If your point is we have "bodies" to play the 1 tech, sure. We have guys.

But we certainly don't have any real quality right now at the 1 tech. Price is a JAG. A backup type that's going to be forced to play more than he probably should. Crawford isn't a 1 tech, he's a 3 tech and frankly the reason he plays as much DE as he does is because I think the team realized he couldn't take the beating at the 3 tech with his shoulder issues. Ash and Neal are fringe guys. Expecting them to be good would seem to be a bit optimistic at this point.
