The Cowboys are changing Byron Jones‘ position this year and it looks like they hope to have him at cornerback for at least the next two seasons. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Cowboys are expected to exercise their option on Jones’ contract for the 2019 season. Teams must decide on the fifth-year [more]

Don't worry, our new secondary coach will teach him how to hold wr just like Sherman.

Excellent move by the Boys. I wanted Dallas to draft Byron prior to his selection and have been ecstatic with his level of play. I see him taking the next step in his career and making the pro-bowl. I love his ability to match-up with TEs or WRs and his ability to play FS.

Congrats to Byron.

Lol what makes you think he is going to take the next step? Is it the two career interceptions he has? Is it his unwillingness to tackle?

Why are you happy with his level of play? Clearly it wasn’t very good or else we would have never moved him back to corner.

He can run fast and that’s about it.

That's a fair 1 year price. Let's see how he does this year. Just because we pick it up now doesn't make it guaranteed i don't think....

That's about it.

The Cowboys are in a "Damned if they do, damned if they don't" position.

No issues with it.

His lack of physicality/tackling ability was inexcussable at safety but passable at corner.

I think he'll find most success at outside using the sideline as an extra defender. He still has utility on this team covering TEs that line up wide. Im eager to see how he reciever coaching from Richard.

Excellent move by the front office. They lock him in at a reduced rate (5th year for a corner is 9.1M but is being paid as a safety). Like has been stated, it’s only guaranteed for injury so the option can easily be retracted before next season at no cost Barron significant injury. It gives them a year to evaluate him as a corner under Kris Richard’s tutelage with the option to keep him at a reduced rate for the position if he succeeds. Very pragmatic move.

He sucks that’s why. Marquez White and BW Webb would be better.
LOL...OK...ranked a top 10 safety by several sports outlets (PFF and Fox are just a couple) and he sucks. He is going back to his natural position so you have no idea how that is going to work out. Less than $7 million for a decent corner is cheap in this league. White or Webb...LOL...Reach much?

Nothing against Byron, but we just spent the money we saved cutting Dez.
Or the money we could have spent filling in the giant hole at MLB with former pro bowler Navarro Bowman.

I’m not sure if Byron will see the field at CB much.
Does anyone know if we expect him to start or are we paying $6m to a guy who hasn’t played CB in several seasons.

I don't know, I like Byron. He does lack the flashy stats, but so did everybody else in our backfield.

I actually didn't. Seemed like they would just let him go....but I'm glad it happened. They've screwed him out of his natural position....he deserves a shot to play corner.

He played a lot of safety his first 2 years in college, and had to know there was a chance he could play it as a pro. He didn’t get screwed, he just helped out where his employer asked him to.

A lot of times these fifth year options are ridiculous but 6 million? That’s not bad at all. At that number, I’m glad we pulled the trigger.

Just imagine if he did have a breakout year moving back to CB under a new position coach and we didn’t pick up the option. People would erupt on this board when we have to turn around and franchise tag him, resign him or let him walk. This option not only lets us evaluate him another season at a competitive rate compared to the money we would pay trying to replace him on the open market but it protects us in case he does take another step in his fourth year.
And if he sucks it's still less than Crawford

I figure those details will be more concrete once Practices start.

Personally I’d rather BJ play for the spot like any other player and may the best man start.

I was hoping Byron would have been more of a play maker being he was a first round draft pick with freak athleticism, but oh well. I think this is a smart move by the Cowboys. $6 million isn't bad for Jones. He's still a solid player, just not a play maker. But, he won't be getting play maker money either.
