Heading into the summer, that leaves just one big question in the form of a possible contract extension for Zack Martin. Speaking on 105.3 FM The Fan on Sunday morning, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the Cowboys are already considering those numbers.

“Yeah, we’re kind of looking at them,” he said. “We usually work on these things, a lot of times, in training camp. That’s when the player is up for it.”

"At some point here we’ll direct our attention to Zack and see kind of how he’d like to proceed,” Jones said. “But yeah we’ve been playing with these numbers, and when you’re dealing with top players like Zack, usually these things aren’t that difficult if everybody’s got some form of reasonability.”

The Browns made Kevin Zeitler the highest-paid guard in the league during free agency, signing him to a five-year, $60 million contract with $31.5 million in guarantees. It’s a good bet that Martin will challenge for that distinction.
Good bet? He will shatter it.

Sounds more like we are showing him the door

We don't value guards...we let 65 walk...time to let 70 walk

What are you talking about? They signed both Smith and Frederick to extensions during camp. Romo's cap savings don't hit until June 2nd so that's the delay in the deal getting done. The only door he's being shown is the one to his new mansion.

This is Stephen Jones acknowledging that Martin is going to set the market and that the team understands that.

They did Fred and Smith in camp. This will not be a contentious negotiation. Martin will get a long-term deal and he'll become the highest paid guard in football.
It will be very large total value, with annual guarantees built-in, and structured in a way to be restructured. He and Tyron Smith will have made well over 100 million by the time they retire. Insane.

Martin isnt going anywhere lol you guys make me laugh

I WANT Martin to be resigned. He is an elite player at his position, arguably number one at his position. His ability to play at a high level should get him a top 5 contract at his position. He will likely be paid as the top guard, which would not be out of line.

This is much different than the Dez situation who was paid top 5 money even though he is not a top 5 player at his position. Martin deserves the pay day far more than Dez did.

Having said that, there is a salary cap in football. There is market value for the best player at his position, and there is what is a reasonable cap number for a player of his stature at his position.

Those two numbers must line up. There is a number that is fair for both parties. Arguably Martin's market value may exceed what is reasonable to pay under the cap to any player. Hopefully Martin will be well paid, but it will not unreasonably cripple our cap.

As much as we want and need to resign Martin, there is a number that would be better to turn it down rather than resign him. We have him for one more year under his original contract and we can franchise him for one, or two more years if we chose to do so. So ultimately we control him for three more seasons if we want to do so. During that time Martin bears all the risk of loss due to injury, which is significant to a football player.

We could also tender Martine and hope he gets signed out from under us for a first or a first and a third round pick. We could probably obtain a reasonable substitute for Martin (albeit probably a lesser talent) for a lot less money with a single first round pick. That also be figured into the equation when deciding how much to offer him.

Leading up to Dez's extension what exactly had Dez done to not deserve the contract he was given?

He had arguably one of the best starts to a WR's career of all time.

You sound ridiculous and undermine your credibility when you say things like this.

Sounds to me like Stephen is warning Martin's agent thru the media that he'll get paid but don't push it.
