For reference...

Zeitler signed this year for 5 years and $60 mil w. a little over 50% guaranteed ($12mil SB + first two years' base and $3.5 mil of base in year 3). This is the top Guard contract in the league.
y1'17 $6mil + $2.4mil SB
y2'18 $10mil + $2.4mil SB
y3'19 $10mil + $2.4mil SB
y4'20 $10mil + $2.4mil SB
y5'21 $10mil + $2.4mil SB

Surprisingly straightforward but Cleveland has a ton of room and not much talent to keep.

Our recents...
  • Frederick signed for 6 years and $56 mil w. 50% guaranteed.
  • TSmith signed for 8 years and $97.6 mil w. 23% guaranteed.
A 6 year deal would take him to age 32-33 (Nov. bday). Surprisingly, there are only 2 Guards in the league age 33 and none older. I will bet Jones & Jones goes a million per year average more than Zeitler in exchange for a little more creative accounting and an extra year.

If you want to say he's not in the conversation for the top receiver, that's fair - especially given the past two years. But not top 10? Since 2010 (when he was drafted), the only player with more receiving touchdowns is Rob Gronkowski. And he's got one more. Dez has 8 more TDs than the second best WR. He's in the top 10 in receiving yards. Production matters more than anything in this league. He's a top 10 guy based on his production.

Fans have recency bias and don't really look into the stats of his peers at WR, just see the highlights on Sportscenter of Odell/Julio/Brown.

Regular Season
2014: 8 TDs on 16 redzone targets (8/16)
(Other notables: R. Cobb 10/27, Antonio Brown 9/33, J. Graham 9/23, Gronk 9/18, Odell 8/27, Demaryius Thomas 6/40, AJ Green 3/15, Julio 2/13)

2016: 5 TDs on 14 redzone targets, missed 3 games
(Others: Jordy 11/35, Mike Evans 7/19, Odell 5/26, Julio 2/11, AJ Green 2/10, Brown 5/18)

Dez scores redzone TDs on a low volume of targets. Thats why he is paid what he is paid. He has a role and he does it as well as anyone at the position. Dak will definitely be working on that back shoulder fade this summer, and you'll see Dez back in double digit TDs.

It's not revisionist history if the people saying it were also saying it at the time the contract was signed, and there were many people on that train at the time. This isn't just about stats. They had to hire a full time baby sitter to hold his dick for him 24/7. You don't pay a guy top 5 money AND have to baby sit him. It isn't a sound decision. Add his lack of precise route running, his inability to get separation and the mental toughness of a 5 year old girl and it is a poor decision.

If there was no cap, I couldn't care less how much they pay Dez, but there is a cap, and I and many others, do care about it.

We are tight against the cap year after year because of ****ty contracts mostly due to over paying for past production. Witten, Dez, et. al. It really sucks to see guys like Leary walking out the door and guys like Witten sucking up all the cap dollars they do.
Man shut up

Well, we can definitely agree he's underperformed that deal so far.

He basically got a deal that guaranteed him top-3 WR money at signing. He was probably a top 5-6 player at that point. Then he missed time.

Not a good deal for us, I agree. But there's no way Jerry doesn't make that deal for Dez. I don't like the market premium, but I can live with it because I didn't think it was that out of line. What I didn't like was his history of back problems and the possibility that would catch up with him sooner rather than later.

I understand why some people had him as a top 5 receiver at the time the new contract was signed. That's a reasonable argument but reasonable minds can view the same facts differently.

If you base it just off of touchdowns and certain other statistics then yeah someone could say that. I see Dez as a valuable player, just not top 10. Certain intangibles knock him out of the conversation for me.

I really think he feasts on bad defenses and struggles against a top corner. If you are paying a guy too 5 money he should NEVER be shut down if he is facing single coverage. Dez doesn't fall into that class from my point of view.

The team didn't miss a beat with him out of the game last year.
