Cowboys' Free Agent Strategy Starting To Take Shape With Pursuit Of Rolando McClain And Morris Claiborne

http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2016...-take-shape-with-pursuit-of-mcclain-claiborne

While many NFL teams have already reached agreement with some of their own free agents, the Dallas Cowboys have not gotten any names on the dotted line. But according to comments from team VP Stephen Jones, who oversees the personnel department, the first two free agents they are going after are linebacker Rolando McClain and cornerback Morris Claiborne.

This is the first real indication of the overall strategy the Cowboys will take in free agency. Although it remains to be seen if the team will actually make much progress with either player, it certainly looks like they want to try and get deals with them on their terms, before the prices start to escalate with the start of free agency on March 9. It is a poorly kept secret that teams engage heavily in sub rosa discussions with agents during the NFL Combine, when team executives and agents all flock to Indianapolis. This is a time when both sides can begin feeling out how much demand there may be for various players. The Cowboys are looking to find out just how expensive it would be to go ahead and lock up one or both, and if they are prepared to pay that price now. The team obviously hopes that the demand is soft enough to not have to commit too much.

Dallas uses free agency to address needs to focus on finding the best players in the draft. McClain and Claiborne both represent clear needs for the team. While they have had some issues, notably McClain's four-game suspension in 2015 and the injury-plagued career for Claiborne to date, both were important pieces for the defense last season. It is notable that Jones did not indicate any interest in re-signing Greg Hardy, a stance that was echoed by head coach Jason Garrett during his press conference at the Combine...

I'd wouldn't be upset with retaining McClain or Claiborne.. They are both still relatively young talented football players. Both have had shaky starts to their careers.. Neither have tapped into their true potential for one reason or their other. I'd take 'em back at the right price. I'd hate to see Claiborne finally stay healthy and finally be Great on another team.
I think we're able to keep McClain, but Claiborne will chase the money and start fresh somewhere else. Make no mistake, another team will pay him. I am glad to see the Boys move on from Hardy. This is the ultimate team sport.. You can't have a polarizing guy like Hardy dividing the locker room.

The problem is if you accumulate too many players like Claiborne / McClain / even Sean Lee on defense -- all of whom have had major problems staying healthy in the first 4-5 year of your careers -- it's a gamble.

Only we would "pursue" these two

So, this denotes a partnership in the actual franchise?

Then, instead of a fly by flame...why doesn't one explain just exactly how that wouldn't fit in with an entire picture projecting into the immediate future. Alright how does the team pull all the parts together to reform an entire team...without spending the entire cap amount for a brand new team?

Ro- out of shape. Uninspired. Another failed test away from a year ban

Mo- never healthy. Not any good. And oh yeah, quit on his team when rightfully demoted.

Yep. Sign me up.

The team continues to rely on unreliable players. And that extends to the offense as well. Randle was their chosen replacement for Murray, how'd that work out? They put all of their eggs in Romo's basket, without a viable backup, how's that looking right now? And the fact that they even talk about Lance Dunbar shows that they still don't get that the guy gets seriously injured every time they use him!

The amount of status quo being employed by a 4-12 team amazes me.

I agree with you to a point, Stash. Everything you said in this post is true, the Cowboys have relied on the unreliable for far too long.

Where I disagree is that they will maintain the status quo. I honesty believe they will do everything possible (in FA and the draft) to upgrade positions of unreliability, starting with DT (Hayden), LB (Wilber) and safety. Personally, I don't think Dunbar makes this team if they upgrade RB through the draft. At least I hope.

Anytime you get a new player on the team regardless of previous experience there is going ri be a learning curve that can sometimes extend to an entire season.

The bottom line is that a player that knows the system and his team will have a distinct advantage over a player from another team even if he is considered better to a certain degree. Of course, I'm not referring to the difference between a career backup and a current Pro Bowler.

I truly hope that is the case, but I'm seeing an awful lot of the same faces for 2016 that helped us get to 4-12 in 2015. Very few coaching changes, and lots of talk of keeping the players they have.

All because you sign Rolando McClain and Claiborne does not mean we won't be looking at linebackers in the draft. If you can get McClain for cheap, sign him.

There are only about 3 solid starting CBs in this FA, and you need all 3 of them will be getting good contracts. So, we let Claiborne walk and cut Carr, you better hope you hit on a solid rookie corner and sign one of those big CB FA.

Both would be good signings for us.
