Cowboys fliers in 4th round not looking good

I’m not draft guru, but I put in a lot more time getting to know the prospects this year than in years past. I was pretty excited about the players that were on the board and available to us in the 4th. Then I watched our picks in the 4th round and was very disappointed in the Shelton and Overton picks.

I know it’s early, but the early returns don’t really bode that well for either one of these guys. I don’t know why Dallas doesn’t stick a little bit closer to the concensus rather than reaching for guys who really aren’t that inspiring. These picks really didn’t make a lot of sense from day one.

I’m hoping that the team ends up being vindicated with these picks, but as of right now the Cowboys seem to have missed on these picks.

However their 3rd round picks the last 2 years look like 1st rounders.

Overton has not looked bad the little we have seen of him.

Moore looked horrible on that deep ball never turned around . Shelton was giving up pressure after pressure on his QB’s the bright spot Overton had a sack . But Toia had several nice plays a sack a pass batted down so if it came down to Overton or Toia I would think Overton is PS Toia actual immediate DL depth .

Shelton looks positively awful. I didn't watch much the other night, but he's a turnstile, looks slow and weak.

He’s definitely not ready for the NFL game.

I wouldn’t have him on the 53-man roster and would ‘risk’ cutting him to put him on the practice squad to possibly develop.

Yeah, I don’t think they’ll likely risk it this year given that he’s a 4th rounder. I think there’s a better chance he gets IR’ed with some mystery injury and effectively red-shirted.

They could go that route as well.

But I’d have no problem with cutting him and trying to put him on the practice squad.

Overton had one bad play in the first preseason game. It's always been a curiosity to me why people continuously judge players on one play. Other than that, he's showing what we thought he was, a big nasty run stopper. Great pick.

Shelton? Just people not paying attention. Dude was a 4th for a reason, because he's raw. Shoulder injury kept him from the needed weight training, so he's got a ways to go.

Overton was a 5 star recruit back in the day. Not hard to get lost a bit at Alabama given all the monsters that play there. A year ago that guy had a first round grade on him. Had a mediocre last season and is a bit undersized at DT but considering the pedigree he was a steal in the 4th. I like what I have seen from him.

I always take this position - if you have at least a pick in every round for the class to be a "success" you have to hit on your 1st rounder, either the 2nd or 3rd rounder has to be a full time contributor, and you need to find at least two depth pieces (not even good players) from the 4-7 rounds.

You do that, and you've done OK IMO. People will focus on round 4 and talk about busts, but IMO, there isn't a whole heck of a lot of difference between a 4th round and a 5th rounder at that point. When you look at the percentages of success rate of picks, there is a clear line between 3rd and 4th round and then the differences between 4th and 7th aren't all that great.

The draft was just 4 months ago! It's FAR too early for this.

You see why Dallas has not sniffed a NFC Conference game in 30+ years. Their draft has been average --at best. The Conference finals teams draft good and the evidence is......playing in the conference finals. Dallas is a desert.
