Cowboys give Glenn an ultimatum

By MAC ENGEL
tengel@star-telegram.com

The Dallas Cowboys want receiver Terry Glenn on their team.

But an NFL source said the Cowboys have told Glenn to either sign the $500,000 injury waiver for his surgically-repaired right knee or prepare to play elsewhere. And that time is growing short for Glenn’s decision.

Glenn is due $1.74 million this season. By signing an injury waiver, if he injures his right knee at any time, that $1.74 million would be nullified and he would be paid a pro-rated $500,000. If he was to suffer any other injury other than to his right knee, he would be paid the full $1.7 million.

Glenn is coming off two surgeries last season that limited him to appearing in the regular-season finale at Washington and the divisional playoff game against the New York Giants. He did not catch a pass against the Commanders.

He had two receptions for 30 yards against the Giants.

The Cowboys are not allowing him to participate in their organized team activities or any other practice until he signs the waiver.

I completely agree with Jerry here on this issue.

What's the vet minimum? $850k or so? That's all he's making anywhere else.

Which means they're setting his % chance of playing at about 30%.

30% of $1.7 million = $.510
70% of $0.5 million = $.350

Total of $860k.

So, if Glenn thinks his chance of playing all 16 games is better than 30% he should take the deal.

oh well, sucks that Crayton becomes our #2, hopefully Stanback raises his game, and steps up, and challenges Crayton.

If he doesn't, in my mind he exposes what I thought all along. That he was trying to collect another year of NFL salary - whether he could play or not.

I'll always appreciate what he did while he was here, but I think it's time to move on.

Cut him and use the money more wisely on players who are healthy enough to play.

This story, if true, isn't a major revelation. I think some of you are jumping the gun a bit. I still think Glenn eventually signs.

He knows he has a great shot at a Super Bowl with the Cowboys, so he won't want to play elsewhere. There's not even a guarantee he gets an offer elsewhere. Check out Shaun Alexander.

And if he was only playing for the money, he wouldn't have been nearly as devastated as he was after our playoff loss to NYG.

Players don't give any money back when they get injured like Glenn did last year, so they shouldn't be surprised when the team looks to cover it's bases.

Fullly realize the odds are against Glenn staying healthy long enough to make the kind of contribution we'd all love to see him make. Kinda feel sad that Glenn's career with the Cowboys could end this way. As for the comment that the money he due to make could be used elsewhere for players who able to contribute; none of those players can provide anywhere near what Glenn could give us if he were somehow able to stay healthy and perform at his old level for 1 final year -- hopefully a SB win/ring for us and for him.

I suppose Miami might sign him for the vet minimum but really believe Glenn wants a SB win with the Cowboys & can imagine that his teammates want the same thing. Only Terry really knows just how good his knee feels but participating in the June minicamp will give him and us a much better picture. Since I doubt we have a chance of adding another player who can give us what a healthy Glenn can, I hope he signs the injury settlement & remains a Cowboy--the SB dream remains alive.

Jerry, since when do you care about saving a few bucks? What are your plans if he calls your bluff? Are you really ready to roll the dice with TO, Crayton, and a bunch of maybes? What if TO jacks up his ankle or finger again? Aren't we a little closer to a championship with Glenn on the roster, even at less than full strength? This is an odd time to get "penny wise."

...he will be offered an unguaranteed vet min with no signing bonus.

I'm not the sharpest cookie, but I wouldn't put guaranteed money on that knee.

He's not to bright then. His best chance to play and get a ring is right where he is now. Its also his best chance at getting the 1.7 million because I highly doubt the Dolphins give him anything over the minimum. (and thats if they even want him)

The writing is on the wall here - medically we don't think he can play out the year.

I think it is better just to release Glenn rather than hope he can play out the year. At the very least it will get some of the younger WRs more time on the field to develop.

There may be a vet we can bring in later if needed to be the #3 WR if none of the kids steps up. I don't want another season of Hurd out there.

I know it's been mentioned, but what is the cap hit of cutting Glenn if he doesn't agree to this deal vs keeping him for his current salary?
