I think it is a mistake to look at stats without investigating them. Let's bring up some keep factors into these numbers.

I think we're really different defenses working with really different situations despite very similar schedules.

I think we've focused more on not giving up the big play, which happens a lot more when you commit to getting pressure. They've given up 7 more passing touchdowns than we have and they've intercepted the ball fewer times than we have.

They've feasted on bad qb play. They have allowed 7.7 yards per attempt, even though their completion rate has only been 57.2 percent... That means their yards per catch has to be pretty bad... It's 12.2 yards per catch compared to our 11.12 (which isn't great either), but goes to the point that when they play better quarterbacks they haven't been as successful.

Any time they have played a qb who has been halfway decent (I'm not including Manning, so you can discount this if you want).

Andrew Luck - 3 touchdowns, 1 interception, no sacks.
Carson Palmer - 2 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, no sacks.
Aaron Rodgers - 3 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, 1 sack.

They beat the Colts by 3.

They also lost to San Fran. As they bottled up Philly's running game and forced Nick Foles to try and beat them. He couldn't. They lost this game despite returning a punt return for a touchdown, and despite having a pick six, and having a blocked punt taken back for a touchdown.

We need to run on this team and force them to try to beat us straight up. If we play smart and we're careful on special teams, we should beat this team. We're better than they are despite what many in the media say.

They aren't a terribly explosive passing offense. They're 13th in the NFL in yards per attempt. They're 17th in the NFL in rushing yards per attempt...

The key to this game isn't even necessarily to get a ton of pressure on Sanchez as much as it is to bottle up their running game with as few rushers as possible and make sure their receivers don't beat us.

We're going to need to be better against the run here and more consistent.

Philly thinks they can stop our running game, but we've gone up against many of the best rush defenses in the nfl... better than philly by average. No one has kept Murray below 4 yards per carry.

The key to the defense will be the play of the corners.

I'm not expecting a "sack-fest". Philly's Oline is decent and the Cowboys are at least one DE away from having a good pass rush.

But the corners can play better than they have over the past month.

It's gonna bite us in the *** eventually I do believe.

Yep. Even if we went on a run and won this division you can't shake the feeling it's the lack of pressure on defense that will ultimately end our season and the what if game can start about the Ware release.

If the pass rushing front is that poor, then what area of the defense is compensating?

So far our defense has been competent overall (and an improvement over last year). So if the pass rush is THAT bad, someone else on the D must be picking up the slack?

Or is it the coaching? The scheme?

I'm just trying to understand how this is the worst pass rush we've had in 20+ years, yet it's clearly not the worst defense we've fielded during that time.

I think the pass rush this year is improved over last year. At least we have actual NFL players on the DL this year.

How many sacks has our O-line allowed, and how many sacks has the Eagles offensive line allowed?

Cowboys have allowed 21 sacks on 356 dropbacks.

Eagles have allowed 17 sacks on 475 dropbacks.

By percentage, the Eagles pass protect better.

Eagles have run 800 plays from scrimmage, while the Cowboys have run 696.

Yep. The Eagles do not give up many sacks.

The key to the defense will be the play of the corners.

So, against a team that likes to run, the "key to the defense" will be the play of the corners?

A worse defense held the Eagles in check in Philadelphia last year mainly by stopping the run and harassing Foles.

I must have missed the secret way the corners won that game for the Cowboys.

It's a question of tempo, and how they run their offenses. The Eagles play much faster, and get more plays in. They also face many more plays from the opposition (they have faced 763 plays, the Cowboy defense has played 665 snaps). The Cowboys are far more deliberate, and run an offense where the pass routes tend to be deeper. It leads to the opportunity for more sacks.

The Eagles do not have the running game this season that they did last season.

It might be a good idea to watch one of their games this season.

The Cowboys defense has gotten worse over the last month, even though the amount of pressure they've been applying has increased. Also the run defense has been generally good over the past month.

The one area the defense has fallen off is in coverage.

7 of those were in the first two games when Romo was kind of laying down to avoid the big hit. They're also fifth in the league in fewest QB hits, so they're not letting TR get hit often.

Absolutely agree - you can just tell we're regressing on defense, second worst in the Red Zone, 5.9 yards per play (Giants game), 3rd down efficiency are all starting to fade compared to the beginning of the year. It's been a great year to build on but our season will end, whenever it ends, on defensive liabilities.

But the next two years - watch out.

Well, I think they have a lot to do on defense before it's fixed and I have no idea how long Romo will hold up physically and play this way.

Then you have the RB situation. Should Murray walk, everyone outside of Dallas will claim the Cowboys won't be the same.

Before I reply, I'll wait for your post where you support your premise with something more than hyperbole.

That's going to be a long long wait.

The bottom line is that the Cowboys are 8-3. The defense has to be doing OK to get that record.
