And he is the best available. Dallas can't afford him.

Smith has always had weight issues though. He was 360 for a long while and got into better shape at 340 and had a quality contract year. Do you really want to invest in someone like that? His quickness is questionable even at 340. I like him if he's cheap.

I would be surprised if he is. The good thing for us is with the number of tackles out there right now, we have negotiating power. If Smith being the youngest and most talented signs with a team, the others will fall like dominoes.

The Cowboys voluntary offseason program starts in two weeks. I hope they make their moves by then.

So your comparing Winston and clabo by using the entire KC line stats

Pro football focus shows Clabo giving up 5 sacks to Winston only allowing 3. This also with Winston having terrible QB play and bad WRs. Atlanta has Matt Ryan who can get the ball out fast to two very good WRs and TE

No-you mentioned the Falcons line in your previous post. You do also know that the Falcons threw 140 more passes than the Chiefs last year....basically the equivalent of four full games worth of pass protection. I think their performances were a wash overall and both are infintely better than Doug Free.
Again, I don't hate the idea of Winston, but one huge alarm bell is that Winston is looking for his third team in three years.

I don't believe that Winston looking for another team is an indication that he is a bad player, or a red flag type of player.

I remember when he was vocal about the Chiefs cheering when Cassel went down.

Respectable and honorable line man that would take pride in keeping D-lines off of Romo's back.

Ryan has a 12 mill cap hit - a deal identical to Romo's would produce the same cap hit.

They don't need to free space to sign him long term

They may not need the space but odds are they have him in the plans for a lot longer than Dallas has Romo in the plans.

If Dallas only really has a 4 year deal in mind for Romo (I don't BTW), Ryan is probably in the 8-9 year plan for Atlanta.

If you look at how his rookie contract was written, it looks as though the Falcons prefer a steady cap hit for him. Last 4 years has been just about the same after the first 2 seasons which were likely lower just to see if he's the guy who's worth what he's been making.

In that sense, they might need space because they would rather have him count a more balanced number from year to year instead of getting that low discount up front and then being stuck with a high cap number down the road.

Doesn't really look like they saved much so who knows.

I definitely don't want to have to rely on Doug Free, but what if, and yes this is a big IF. We are able to draft in the first 3 rounds a OG, OT, and a DT. And still be able to sign a Brandon Moore to be the 2nd guard. And could do that without cutting Free this year. What makes more financial sense, to cut him this year anyway. Or bit the bullet even though you know you are over paying this year, and cut him next year.

I would argue, that it is only smart to keep him around as long as we can afford to keep him, because it gives us more flexibility on when to cut him to free up the most amount of money next year.

What makes the most sense is to get rid of guys who aren't in the plans as soon as you can and not let their base salaries eat up cap room.

There's really no reason to keep Free unless he decides to give back a lot of money. He basically counts the same against the cap, on or off the team, unless Dallas splits the hit. Then he costs like half as much.

Having him play this year not only eats $10M in space but it only reduces the dead money by $3M so next year, Dallas is in a position to have nearly just as much as they do now.

The real difference is, Jerry actually has to pay this guy $7M in weekly checks.

He's far too smart of a business guy to fork that out.

FWIW, Doug Free had more penalties called on him in 2012 than Clabo has had called on him in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons combined.

Clabo is head and shoulders above Winston as well.

I see Atlanta trying to draft Armstead by releasing Clabo.

Pretty sure that Clabo's release is due to Matt Ryan's incoming loaded extension. Clabo is a victim of that, no indication to his play though. If they could keep him, im sure they would.

This is interesting.

Clabo, because of his relatively high level of play and position flexibility, makes too much sense for us not to look at him if we can get a deal done. It upgrades one of those right side positions and lets us still fill either of the others in the draft.

Even if we sign Clabo and draft Cooper/Warmack, we still have holes in the interior. It looks like we're letting Livings go, so we'll be relying on Bernadeau for G and Costa for C.

3 good starters better than one good starter. A vast improvement, and you can't fix them all. 3>1

Whoever we have at center should be okay, whether it be Costa or Berny or whomever else there is to compete. So we would likely get two good starters and one solid contributor out of the either the guard or center as they will now get solid assistance from the new additions. Making one "hole" on the line. Which is more than we could ask for in one off season, more importantly It's probably more in line of what a good offensive line looks like, since everybody can't be all-pro.

There is also the prospect of Cooper being able to play center which should spread the goodness along the front. There is also a possibility of drafting a center in the draft, Schwenke in the third or Holmes in the 4/5th who I think could also start as I think he possesses the skills to do so. Either way it has yet to be seen and we could just hold our judgement until there something to be judged here.
