Free's base salary is 7M. Why would you want to keep him?

One reason to keep him, is that if we don't "need" that $7 million dollars, you give him a year to see if he figures out what went wrong last year to go from a pretty decent OT a few years ago, to a train wreck. Granted, "figuring it out" isn't likely, but far from impossible. A second reason, is that even if he doesn't figure it out, if you can afford to keep him for one more season, and you cut him next year, and made him a June 1st cut next year, you would decrease how much dead money you have on your books for him.

As I said, I am sure that keeping Free and his $7M base salary is far from their top choice. But depending on who we get in the draft, it is conceivable that we could afford to bite the bullet and keep him for one more year as a swing tackle, and cut him sometimes next year. Either right away, where you would have that saving then to spend at the start of FA, instead of after June 1st. Or cut him June 1st, to cut down on how much dead money you have to eat.....

Doug Free is not worth keeping around for 7 mil or anything more than a mil, but I want him gone, replaced with some one who can actually block, not get run over like a paper bag.

I definitely don't want to have to rely on Doug Free, but what if, and yes this is a big IF. We are able to draft in the first 3 rounds a OG, OT, and a DT. And still be able to sign a Brandon Moore to be the 2nd guard. And could do that without cutting Free this year. What makes more financial sense, to cut him this year anyway. Or bit the bullet even though you know you are over paying this year, and cut him next year.

I would argue, that it is only smart to keep him around as long as we can afford to keep him, because it gives us more flexibility on when to cut him to free up the most amount of money next year.

I hope so, I would be very exited to see Tony play behind a competent line. A few more rushing TDs would be nice too.

Ever notice how every now and then a tidbit you come across sticks with you, and it kind of informs every assumption you make about what the team's doing for a few weeks after that? That happens with me, anyway. One of the guys on Talking Cowboys last week mentioned that JG privately indicated that addressing OL this season was going to be priority one.

Now, take anything said by anyone in the organization in April with a grain of salt, but for whatever reason, I believe JG knows the obvious that the OL is the single biggest opportunity for improving the OL on this team. And his team has been pretty aggressive at addressing needs once they decide they need to be addressed. Clearly, we're not going to stay put given how last season ended. I'm betting we do a lot to shore things up here in the next four weeks, one way or another.

I really hope so. Surely Garrett recognizes how much better his offense runs when it is balanced between run and pass. Investing in the OL would really do wonders for this offense.

i don't see how anyone can say winston is a better player. he may fit the scheme better, he may be younger. but he is not near as good of a player. clabo is gonna likely be too expensive. but he could set the market for winston and make signing him easier. clabo will get more money than winston because every nfl gm knows clabo is a better player. there is a reason he is getting reach outs after one day and winston is not

I don't see how you think Clabo is better. And if a player is a better fit then he is the better player for your team, that's what you want. I want the better player for the team and that is Winston.

You think Clabo is better, I think Winston is better.

Winston was better 3-4 years ago . The last couple years I don't think there's any debating Clabo has been the better player .

I don't understand the logic. People want to give up on Free (who only had one bad year) for guys who might not be any better. I know Free is expensive and that cutting him will free up some cap space, but then wouldn't signing someone (who might not be any better) counteract the cap space we make up for cutting Free?

Free didn't even look like he belonged in the NFL. He looked awful in every single game last year. It royally sucks that we so overpayed for him, but we've got to let him go. When we do I think he ends up playing Arena or CFL or being completely out of football.

Clabo was a pro bowl player in 2010.

A old player that was once a probowler, sounds like a player the Commanders would sign

Flozell adams went to several pro bowls, let's just bring him back then

Well there goes any credibility you might have had touting Winston over Clabo.

It was sarcasm about Adams.

I'm just saying, just because a guy went to a probowl two years ago doesn't mean anything now

The point he was making, and it's true, is when you resort to hyperbole in defense of a point you run the risk of losing credibility in the argument. For instance maybe if Flozell actually made a pro bowl 2 years ago you would have something there but in reality not so much. It doesn't matter if your point is spot on...when you resort to tactics like that you can lose people.

Winstons a solid player, but I still find it troubling that he is looking for his 3rd team.
