Not sure why we are ruing not signing a mediocre RT.

Then again, most were thrilled with the mediocre performance of our LT this year, too.

Maybe because a mediocre RT is a massive upgrade than what is available on the team.

It was Tyron's first year at LT, cut the kid a break. He played solid in that position. Especially in comparison to the rest of the line.

I think people are giving Tyron too much of a pass for last season. He wasn't outright bad, but he could have played better. I know I was expecting more from him, anyway.

He played like I thought he would. Like 21 yr old 2nd yr palyer that had never played lt before. I think some expected way to much from him considering he never played the lt spot.

Top ten pick, with full year under his belt to adjust to the NFL speed, after his second training camp.

There are lots of reasons to give him a pass, if you want them. I do expect it was a bit of a sophomore slump, and he'll get better. But similar excuses can be made at the other OL positions. He still tailed off a bit after a good freshman campaign.

I think people underestimate the swith from rt to lt. He didn't have a full year under his belt at lt. There is a reason why lt make more than rt.

you do remember he had NEVER played LT before, right?

So unlike Free who got pracitce at LT while he played RT Tyron never did anything with LT until Camp last year.

Would be nice if we at least pretended to try to fill some of our needs before the draft instead of having to scramble for the FA leftovers after fail to do so in the draft as well

We already filled the major holes that absolutely had to be filled LB, and safety. And depending on who we draft in the first 3 rounds we might bring in a FA OL. But, lets actually wait and see how the draft plays out if the first two rounds go something like:
#18: Warmack/Cooper
#47: Menelik Watson/Armstead

or

#18: Lane Johnson/Fluker
#47: Warford/Fredrick

Then there is no need to bring in a OG or OT in FA.

I much prefer a situation where we fill what holes we can in FA then go BPA in the draft, if the BPA happens to be something that's not a need then let them compete for a starting spot and who ever is better makes us better.

If say someone is sitting at 18 who is by far the best player on our board but it's say a WR or something else we don't really need we wouldn't have the luxury of picking him because we have needs else where that we'll have to settle of a lesser player at, so less value for our picks. Not to mention that some of the FA targets we have now as backup plans might not be there after the draft

Will Allen is hardly addressing a need, that's just replacing one bad safety with another

Sure, in an ideal world, you could sign Moore and Clabo/Winston before the draft, and still draft an OT and OG in the draft. But the NFL is NEVER an ideal world. There is the salary cap, and roster limits. How do you fit Parnell, Winston, Moore, Smith, Livings, Cook, Bernadeau, Costa, Leary, plus 2 rookies on the roster. And the money that it takes to sign Moore and Winston is money that you can't use next year, unless you get them on a 1 year deal.

We simply do not have the money that we can afford to tie up $3 or $4 million dollars next year in who we hope is our backup OT. That is $3 or $4 million dollars that we would really like to have next free agency, for a guy that with a little luck would be the 4th best OT on the team.

And while it certainly is possible that some of these guys will not be available after the draft, history has shown time and again that most all, if not all of the guys available right now absolutely WILL be available after the draft. Every year, when you get 2 or 3 weeks till the draft the free agent signing all but stop, while teams focus on the draft.

As for Will Allen, while he is far from a great player, S was an absolute NEED after we cut Sensabaugh. We couldn't go into the season with just Matt Johnson as our FS.

Why would you even want to fit all of them on the roster? I'm not sure i am following the we can't sign anyone cause Bernadaeu might lose his roster spot logic here.

You ready to eat more dead money to cut Bernadaeu?

Plain flat and simple, we cut Livings or Bernadaeu, we have to eat more dead money, how much dead money do you want to eat. No, Livings or Bernadaeu didn't live up to there contracts, but they are not horrible players that don't belong in the league.

Neither OT played to expectations. Like I said, I expect him to get better, too.

He's still a very high pick, who hasn't overdelivered.

I wouldn't say "thrilled". I think the general expectation is Smith is more likely to rebound after his first season at a new position.

We signed a starting safety? This is news to me.

And there's no way a guy like Watson will fall to #47. The rest of the potential RT's in this draft are huge question marks who you most likely can't pencil in as a day 1 starter. We need to fill at least 1 hole in free agency on the o line. I'm not panicking yet though with Moore, Clabo, and Winston still available and the market not exactly heating up for them.

Those guys are going to chill until after the draft. There are going to be OL hungry teams calling them, eventually. Moore still makes the most sense if we can find the right OL pick in college to complement him.

We signed Will Allen, who started 7 games last year, and was very solid in those 7 starts for the Steelers. He wasn't signed to be the starter, they hope that Matt Johnson can stay healthy and for him to be the starter, but they signed someone who is very capable of starting if need be.

I think we're going to end up with a three way competition for that other S spot after the draft. We're shaping up to have pretty good competition all over the place, actually. We should have starting positions open at RG, RT, S, and maybe SLB and C. Snaps up for grabs all along the DL. Competition for reps at WR3-4-5 at CB3-4. Should be a fun training camp to see how it all shakes out.

I think Leary is gonna make some noise at one of those OG spots. He's big, strong, mobile, and now he has a year of the system under his belt. He's gonna open some eyes!
