Cowboys Jerry Jones leaves door open for coaching change

Sean Payton is under contract through the end of 2020. Why is he being brought up right now as a potential head coach suitor?

I’m pretty sure a disinterested third party pundit isn’t going to make something up just because it concerns the Cowboys and people will read it. I think this means there must be something to this, guys.

The Saints aren’t for sale.
Sean Payton is under contract.
Drew Brees isn’t retiring.
Payton is happy in New Orleans and the Saints should be a contender for the foreseeable future.
This is manufactured buzz to hype the conference championship games this weekend.

Cowboy fans are so arrogant. We think that everyone is dying to come coach here. Why would Sean leave the saints? He's got a good thing there while we are a mess because of Jerry. What we saw this year is as good as it gets with Jerry and Jason. Watch next year, Dak or Zeke gets hurt and we get 6 wins. You know our cycle.

Jason is not going anywhere! We have watched Jerrys love for Jason over the years and he treats him like a son. Jerry doesnt want to go outside his comfort level to try and win a SB by hiring a real head coach.

Tom Benson passed away, so I'd say that's already happened.

And I believe there was some lawsuit involved between heirs regarding the team, which could trigger that clause if Payton so desires.

That's how I understood it too. I doubt Payton leaves unless Brees is done.

I'd probably think the same. But I wouldn't rule anything out.

Something else that makes me think, Sean Payton's kids still live in Texas. If his drive to be closer to them and see them more is strong enough, that could play a big role too. Family is more important than anything else. For instance, former Steelers O-line coach Mike Munchack - one of the best - left the organization to take the same role with the Broncos, the reason, to be closer to his family.

It got me to thinking that Payton could feel the same way. Just a thought.

I'm as big a Garrett critic as anyone here but I think he's earned another year and if you throw in Jerry's unnatural admiration for him, I've just accepted he isn't leaving. Although, I'm hopeful that we slow down on the extension talk.

I think the team has a real chance to make a move at OC. Linehan will be the fall guy and deservedly so. All of the guys I would have liked to see us hire have gotten recent promotions... Kliff Kingsbury (Cardinals HC), LaFleur (Packers HC), Zack Taylor (Bengals HC), Kendel Briles (Florida State OC), Adam Gase (Jets HC).

The one guy I'd love to see Jerry throw some money at is Mike McDaniel and to give him full control of the offense. I really feel he could turn this offense around.

I believe anyone on this forum could earn another year in Dallas just standing on the sideline clapping while everybody else did the work and coaching!

The guys does nothing but he has earned another year!?!

Is there gonna be a change in ownership?

Saints owner Tom Benson died in March of last year, but there has to be a limit to the time in which Payton can invoke this provision, plus, as long as the ownership is still in the family that may not trigger that provision anyway.

Jerry was stating it simply. If he views that an upgrade to a coaching position is available and willing to sign a deal, he'll do it, otherwise he'll stand pat. I think that's what any GM and owner would do.
I just think that he overvalues what he has sometimes.
All the time..

Correction.

...Would be nice....but I think!..."No dice!...
