Homegrown = players on an active roster in the NFL based on what team they originally were signed/drafted by

They were probably #1 in this category when they won Super Bowls in the Nineties.

The core of the 92 team would have been on their rookie contract with the modern era free agency rules.
Aikman, Emmitt, Erik Williams, Stepnoski, Moose, Arvin Harper, Tony Tolbert, Russell Maryland, Woodson, Kevin Smith, Larry Brown, Jimmie Jones.
Mike Irvin would have been on the 5th year option.

Charles Haley is the only one that would have been a mega contract type player.

Ken Norton was in his 5th season which means he would have been a 2nd contract player.
- However, prior to 92 & the Super Bowl he was not likely to have received a mega contract.

Funny the Rams are third and everyone thinks they go all out in FA.

That's the important difference. The Rams do go all-out for select free agents while also developing homegrown talent. And they've gone to two Super Bowls in the last few years because of it (well, that and good coaching).

What the Joneses fail to understand is that it takes all of those things being used well. Of course, Jerry said a long time ago before his split with Jimmy that 500 coaches could have won the Super Bowl with the 1990s teams, so it was clear back then he didn't understand the importance of all aspects of building a team ... and nothing has really changed in that regard (expect maybe now he understands that it's not as easy as he thought).

It's easy to keep all of your picks. Unless you're actually winning something that's all it really says.

Fans will never understand this but Haley came to Dallas in 1992 and was added to an all-time great time.
Dallas is not the Rams. They are not the top of the league and going for it.

While I can understand fans wanting to do this the false equivalencies are hilariously bad examples.

Dallas has done nothing of note in a very, very long time. But you must walk before you run.

The difference between the Cowboys and the Rams and Ravens are just who that non homegrown talent is. For the Rams and Ravens they will go out and spend some money on a big FA to fill out the holes in the roster (most of the Rams best players and many of the Ravens are NOT homegrown) but they will have their depth be homegrown talent. The Cowboys will have their depth be from other teams and only have their core be homegrown.

As I said in another thread, we do draft well… but we overpay players we draft when resigning them.
Then we can’t afford the impact players that become available via free agency or a trade.

So after years of horrible drafting they hit gold with McClay!

What's your point? Or just sharing an information? ;)

Don't have a problem with, actually I like it. It's not the talent we're lacking, but the culture. The problem I do have is they not changing that.

I like the philosophy of drafting well, keeping and developing your own guys, but its clear the Cowboys take it to the next level which may almost be to a fault. The Rams are heavily home grown, but don't hesitate to add an OBJ, Von Miller, etc. to make a playoff run. The Cowboys sit back, trust the process too much, and make first round exits.

This proves the stupidity of this front office! This is a ridiculous stat. And sad that they think they can’t possibly improve from the pool of available players around the NFL.
