The Cowboys had major representation in the form of defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, VP of player personnel Will McClay, and Mitch LaPoint, their director of college scouting. The Cardinals also sent their VP of layer personnel Quentin Harris.

As expected, the star of the show was Will McDonald IV. His 40 times came in at 4.62 to 4.65 seconds. McDonald ran the 40 wearing a short sleeve hoody. NFL personnel people joked he would’ve run under 4.60 seconds without the extra draft.

His three-cone times were as fast as 6.60 seconds, and his short shuttle was 4.21 seconds. He looked terrific in drills, and there were many compliments about McDonald’s agility and ability to bend. The only criticism I heard was McDonald looked off balance because he’s “Too fast for his body.”

He participated in both defensive line and linebacker drills. Teams project McDonald as a one-gap defensive end in a 4-3 alignment or a 3-4 outside linebacker.

Defensive lineman MJ Anderson, who’s been struggling with a bad hamstring since January, saw the injury flare up again during his first running of the 40 but gutted out the entire workout. His 40 times ranged between 4.85 to 4.95 seconds, and he clocked as fast as 7.78 seconds in the three-cone and 4.75 in the short shuttle. Anderson posted a vertical jump of 33″ at the Combine.

Cowboys DC Quinn ran the drills, and Anderson did defensive end and a few linebacker drills. Teams were impressed he chose to workout through the injury rather than call it a day. Anderson is being talked about as either a 3-tech or a 5-tech at the next level.

Besides meeting with the Rams, Packers, Cowboys, and Steelers the past two days, Anderson had dinner with the Washington Commanders on Monday.

Tiffin cornerback Tyler Richardson, graded as a late-round draft pick entering the season, took part in Tulane’s Pro Day Monday to display his skills in front of almost 20 teams.

Richardson measured 5’10” and 193 pounds and timed in the high 4.4-second range in the 40-yard dash. He’s a long defensive back projected to be a priority free agent. Richardson met with the Raiders, Cowboys, and Commanders.

Durrell Johnson, one of the most underrated linebackers/edge rushers in the upcoming draft, was impressive. He measured 6’5″ and 251 pounds — almost 20 heavier than scouts expected. On a sore hamstring, he timed 4.68 seconds in the 40 with a 1.44 10-yard split. Prior to the hammy issue, Johnson had been timing 4.55 seconds in training. He jumped 38.5″ in the vertical and 10’4″ in the broad.

Johnson, who totaled 27.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks last year, looked solid in position drills as well. The drills were run by the Titans and Dallas Cowboys. The fact Johnson came in over 250 pounds and ran as well as he did was a relief to scouts. Many perceived him to be 235 pounds, a bit light for a 3-4 OLB. Moving forward, teams feel he has the size and athleticism to be used at the line of scrimmage on a consistent basis.

Xavier Gipson, quite possibly to most underrated wide receiver/return specialist in this year’s draft, also had a good day. He measured slightly over 5’9″ and tipped the scale at 189 pounds, 12 heavier than scouts expected. Gipson then timed as fast as 4.38 seconds in the 40. He looked terrific in receiver and return drills.

Gipson’s college stats are pretty astounding — he averaged 18.1 yards per catch on 146 receptions the past three seasons, with 22 TDs. He’s also averaged 20.2 yards on 17 punt returns the past two seasons, with 3 TDs. The Dallas Cowboys are expected to invite Gipson to their local pro day, and he’s drawing a lot of interest from the Chicago Bears.

More than 40 scouts were on hand for SJSU’s Pro Day, quite likely a record for the Mountain West program. And most were on hand to see defensive lineman Viliami Fehoko, who did not disappoint. Fehoko tipped the scales at 282 pounds, six more than his weight at the Combine.

He ran in the low 4.7s (4.72 seconds on many watches) and looked outstanding in position drills. He was relentless during defensive line drills, which were run by the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys and Atlanta Falcons had DL coaches on-site as well.

Fehoko measures a shade under 6’4″ and comes with arms that are 33″. He’s one of the most intense defenders you’ll find in this year’s draft class and offers the versatility to be used at a number of spots up front. He projects as a middle-round pick, and Fehoko could sneak into the third round.
