Latest Cowboys headlines: Why the Colts, Buccaneers, Raiders and Cardinals could all make a move for Murray; Why Bill Parcells compared the Cowboys to Elvis; Why having a good lawyer is always a plus.

Where does DeMarco Murray rank among the NFL’s top running backs? | Jon Machota, DMN
Better question: How would you feel if you just broke Emmitt Smith's franchise record for rushing yards, led the league in rushing yards (with almost 500 yards more than the next best guy), and somebody told you you were only the fifth best running back in the league?

No doubt about this one. DeMarco Murray had an unbelievable season with a league-high 1,845 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns with the Dallas Cowboys. It will be interesting to see what Jerry Jones does because star wide receiver Dez Bryant is set to become a free agent as well. Murray is a bruising running back with good speed, and he's a great teammate to have. The only flaw with Murray is he sometimes fumbles the ball. The Cowboys may choose to franchise tag Murray, thus keeping him another year.

I doubt he goes. We resign him and then either draft someone early or sign another backup. Randle is too iffy w his arrests. Dunbar is a free agent too

I think it is about 75/25 that he stays...you don't go out publicly with two of the most important faces of the team (Red and Tony) if you are not thinking of staying...his agent would go nuts...that would make it harder to "sell" him to other teams

I think Murray is a Cowboy next year

Henry Melton $8,499,500 cap savings if cut with only a $750,750 cap hit? Draft someone to replace him.

Can't say (for me) that it is a savings, more like "didn't want to use it on"...they couldn't not have had any thought of sticking to that deal unless he turned into an all pro in his first year...I wouldn't mind seeing him on a more cost-effective deal

I still think Murray stays. Not sure why I think so, other than the fact he seems to have a great relationship with his teammates.

That was an option in case he dominated. He either redoes a new deal or is released.

On the blog. I don't get why some still bring up franchising Murray. The franchise tag is 9 million, that is too large a hit. It would cripple them from adding defensive help.

Yes, I think most our own FA's stay, or a good part of them that contribute more than the role player types. then they bring in a few FA's to fill some gaps, then draft BPA.
Since most of the high dollar older FA's are gone now. This can be doable. Other than Carr's high cost, I am not sure if any are left that aren't major contributor's.
Carr was playing better toward the end of the year, but would like to see him take a cut. But won't complain if he stays as is. Nor complain if he is released either.

Murray's good, but he's not special. Let somebody else overpay him and use the money on defense.

Please explain to me what is not special about 1800 yards. And before youy tell me this was the liner, keep in mind what Zach Martin said about green grass and making contact.

The idea he is not special just makes my head want to explode.

Special backs would be Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Jim Brown, even Marshall Faulk and others. I wouldn't put Murray in that class.

I agree that Murray's not special. He's good at everything though. The bigger issue is his number of carries from last season. He won't be the same good player next season.

Exactly. People keep pointing backwards instead of gazing forward.

I wish they'd stop.

Very important Cowboys offseason.

We're not going to be able to win a bidding war with Murray (hopefully we don't even participate). If we want Murray to stay, JJ has to stress the relationship with the team, the chance of SB runs in the next 3 years, what it can mean to be part of the triplets and potential SB wins from an endorsement standpoint and for future business opportunities after his football cater is over.

And those of us who see his value wish you guys would stop with the "he can't be good another season". He did what no one has done in a very long time.
He did it with out taking huge amounts of huge hits. The is no reason he can't be a very productive back again. Other than RBs before him fell off.
If we have the best O line in the NFL, than Murray should have another great season.
I just can't wait for the issue to go away a this point.

They can't. He's been solid behind bad Olines to. If our line is so special than Murray should follow this season with another great one.
The just keep pointing to other backs not named Murray.

I define special as a playmaker. Michael Irvin was slow compared to other WR. Emmitt use to kid him about not being able to get to the endzone. But he brought a will to win that infused the team.

The teammates of Murray talk\ about his leadership and skill. They believe he is special. I side with them. Your assertion about power and speed is interesting. The pile moves the direction he is running most times. He gets the dirty yards. And speed is relative. I'd rather have a guy that can move the sticks and play tough than a guy that can wiggle and gets stuffed.

Long runs are beautiful. Moving the sticks on third and short is what wins.
