Cowboys notes: Jones says Dez is ready; Garrett more cautious
By Clarence E. Hill Jr.

IRVING
While owner Jerry Jones continues to target Sunday’s game against the New York Giants for the possible return of wide receiver Dez Bryant, coach Jason Garrett remains beholden to a deliberate rehab process.

Garrett is hopeful that Bryant’s fractured foot will be ready for the Giants game, but he makes no guarantees about the game or even practice this week.

According to Garrett, Bryant needs to be able to do something in practice in order to play Sunday.

“We don’t put these things down like the Magna Carta and say, ‘These are all the different standards that we have for Dez. This is what his standard is for this day and for this day and for this day’,” Garrett said. “We have an objective. We want to get him back on the football field as quickly as we can. We have different processes we’ll go through to help get him there.”...

Cowboys WR Dez Bryant won't play unless he can practice

Jason Garrett reiterated Tuesday that Dallas Cowboys premier wide receiver Dez Bryant (foot) would not play against the New York Giants on Sunday unless he was able to practice during the week. "We want players who are able to practice," Garrett said Tuesday afternoon. "We don't have any hard and fast rules. But for a guy who hasn't played as long as he's been out, we think it's important for him to get back out there."

Bryant was able to do some conditioning work last week, but has yet to take part in a practice since undergoing foot surgery. It's a long shot that the receiver will be in uniform in Week 7, but if he's able to practice over the next couple of days, the odds might shift in his favor.

Garrett has said Bryant is "day to day" and "making progress," but the team, even though it is on a three-game losing streak, will not rush him back.

The Cowboys have two more practices before flying to New Jersey on Friday, and will visit the Sept. 11 memorial that night. They will hold a walkthrough Saturday at a local high school.

...On the flip side of the spectrum, Bryant was the only player on the Cowboys’ roster who didn’t participate in practice. Other injury concerns like Brice Butler and Randy Gregory were on hand and working through the early portion of practice.

The Cowboys’ two new practice squad signees, linebacker Darius Eubanks and defensive tackle Casey Walker, were also on hand.

Bryant’s absence is understandably the story of the week, but it was a rare occasion for Dallas to have 62 of its 63 available players on hand upon return from the bye week. Bryant’s participation Thursday will be a telling indicator of his prospects for the weekend.

If Jerry says that it means bone scan revealed completely healed bone. There is still 20% chance of re-break but this is huge game and I can't see Dez sitting if its just matter of discomfort. Its worth pointing out that Julio Jones rebroke his foot 2 years apart. So there really is no reason to delay getting Dez back into games if scan shows bone is completely healed.

If Jerry wants Dez to play, and Dez wants to play, Garrett has no say.

So......Jerry says Dez is ready. Forces coaches to use a qb it doesn't want (Cassel)....And refuses to play QB coaches want in (Moore). Sounds like old meddling Jerry is alive and well. People who don't think there is a disconnect between the coaching staff and the front office need to start reading between the lines. Funny how there is nothing but years of stories of Jerry tampering...yet fans don't want to accept that it's happening now.

Pretty sure Garrett wants Cassell over a guy who has never started 1 regular season game.

This is Jerry's quote:

“It totally depends on how he’s doing,” Jones said on his radio show on KRLD/105.3 FM. “He had a good end of the week last week. He got in some really good work; didn’t have much negative response from that work. It was strenuous work, the kind that if he can step out here and have a couple really good days of practice, you could see him on go.”

So, he's basically saying what Garrett is saying, but in his own Jerry way.

Garrett has a lot of say, this notion he is some puppet is beyond ridicules. Jerry talked up McFadden is McFadden starting? NO Garrett runs the team if Dez is not ready he is not playing

Not a matter of ignoring. Jones says a lot of things and a lot never happen. Jones is not as stupid as many here think and does understand the role of a HC.

Funny thing last year all the talk was how Jerry was not involved 1st bump in the road with injuries and now it is back to putting BS on Jones.

What he says behind closed doors is all that matters.

I wonder how often Jason rolls his eyes after hearing what the old man said.

"Jerry said that?"
