Defensive guru is downright defensive

Wade Phillips is one of the sharpest defensive minds of our time and a mighty fine football coach, but he sure has thin skin.
Phillips was awfully defensive when the subject of the Cowboys' late-season fade came up this evening. He informed the media masses that this is a new season, but he was kind enough to remind us that the Cowboys only lost three games last regular season. You know, just in case anybody forgot that they were 13-3 after hearing him say it a few dozen times while defending his team's lackluster December.
Right before the Cowboys got beat at home in the playoffs.
"We lost by four points in the playoff game. Yes, that's what happened," he said, confirming a fact that wasn't really in question. "The Giants certainly deserved to win it, and we proved it. That was last year, and we're going to go forward from there. I think all of us learned from that."
He then pointed out how young the Cowboys were last season. Perhaps inexperience was one of the primary reasons the Cowboys' heads got too big, as a few players pointed out during the off-season. But Wade didn't like being asked about that, either.
"Lot of reasons," he said, interrupting the question. "Everybody can come up with reasons."
It's his job to come up with solutions, so he doesn't have to answer similar questions this winter.

Jerry and Wade won't make predictions

Another publication made a big deal about Wade Phillips' saying, "Get your ring finger ready," at a clinic for youth and middle school coaches earlier this week.
Not sure that Wade was misquoted, as he claimed today. My understanding is that he was simply being a good-natured guy, repeated what some Red Bull-and-Kool-Aid chugging fella in the audience chanted while Wade talked to the group.
Whatever.
But predictions certainly weren't spewing from the Cowboys brass' mouth this afternoon in beautiful Oxnard. Jerry and Wade acknowledged the Super Bowl expectations, but they weren't about to make any bold claims.
Jerry joked that he'd lost credibility in the predictions department. Wade really went out on a limb when he declared that the Cowboys would "try to win as many games as we can."
Of course, Jerry couldn't go a whole welcome-to-training camp press conference without saying something wild.
"You guys know that I'm prone to hyperbole," Jerry said with a grin, "but I don't think it's a stretch at all to say that the next 12 months will be the most exciting and intriguing really in the history of the franchise."
Jerry was referring to the opening of JerryWorld following a Texas Stadium farewell season that has a chance to be pretty special.
