Embarrassing in what sense? To Jerry and Wade? Or to the media? I didn't watch.
For all concerned. It was really brutal.

I'm normally fairly neutral when it comes to the media, but man some of the questions were off the chart.

Like some question implying he was going to be fired at the end of this season. Should he have gotten a contract extension.

Quoting something that Wade then got a bit hostile saying "Now hold up, you're quoting something that was misquoted"

Why do you guys still claim to be "America's Team" even tho you haven't won a playoff game since the 90s?

---------------

And even if the questions were fairly standard, the tone behind the questions was very combative and agressive.

To both.

Jerry and Wade came off like babbling idiots.

and Dale Hansen, Calvin watkins, Newy Scruggs, Steve Dennis all came off like complete jerks, the tone of their voices were seemingly upset and mean sprited.

It makes alot of sense though. All those clowns work for or have worked for Espn 1033 in Dallas and that is their M.O.

It was pretty lousy all around.

Defensive guru is downright defensive

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Wade Phillips is one of the sharpest defensive minds of our time and a mighty fine football coach, but he sure has thin skin.

Phillips was awfully defensive when the subject of the Cowboys' late-season fade came up this evening. He informed the media masses that this is a new season, but he was kind enough to remind us that the Cowboys only lost three games last regular season. You know, just in case anybody forgot that they were 13-3 after hearing him say it a few dozen times while defending his team's lackluster December.

Right before the Cowboys got beat at home in the playoffs.

"We lost by four points in the playoff game. Yes, that's what happened," he said, confirming a fact that wasn't really in question. "The Giants certainly deserved to win it, and we proved it. That was last year, and we're going to go forward from there. I think all of us learned from that."

He then pointed out how young the Cowboys were last season. Perhaps inexperience was one of the primary reasons the Cowboys' heads got too big, as a few players pointed out during the off-season. But Wade didn't like being asked about that, either.

"Lot of reasons," he said, interrupting the question. "Everybody can come up with reasons."

It's his job to come up with solutions, so he doesn't have to answer similar questions this winter.

Jerry and Wade won't make predictions

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Another publication made a big deal about Wade Phillips' saying, "Get your ring finger ready," at a clinic for youth and middle school coaches earlier this week.

Not sure that Wade was misquoted, as he claimed today. My understanding is that he was simply being a good-natured guy, repeated what some Red Bull-and-Kool-Aid chugging fella in the audience chanted while Wade talked to the group.

Whatever.

But predictions certainly weren't spewing from the Cowboys brass' mouth this afternoon in beautiful Oxnard. Jerry and Wade acknowledged the Super Bowl expectations, but they weren't about to make any bold claims.

Jerry joked that he'd lost credibility in the predictions department. Wade really went out on a limb when he declared that the Cowboys would "try to win as many games as we can."

Of course, Jerry couldn't go a whole welcome-to-training camp press conference without saying something wild.

"You guys know that I'm prone to hyperbole," Jerry said with a grin, "but I don't think it's a stretch at all to say that the next 12 months will be the most exciting and intriguing really in the history of the franchise."

Jerry was referring to the opening of JerryWorld following a Texas Stadium farewell season that has a chance to be pretty special.

I guess the problem with the Dallas media is that they don't care about being journalists as much as they care about being personalities in their own right. They think they're a part of the show, but really they're just a medium through which we get information.

There are alot of good guys here. Laufenberg, doocy, archer.

But the gang that was out there today were and are a group of buffoons.

That is why all their shows on espn1033 get cancelled. They are all a part of that randy galloway click. For some reason they all puff up their chest and do nothing but talk negatively and act like they know something you dont know.

Its sad. Its like they were all accepted into the cool kids group or so they thought with galloway. They all act just like him.

I have come to expect poor work from dennis, hansen, watkins and scruggs but today was something different. I am actually embarrassed.

I have to disagree, theebs. All those guys -- Dennis (who is usually fine, IMO), Newy, Hansen, Archer -- are TV and newspaper guys first and foremost. They only do some radio on the side. If 103.3 went off the air tomorrow, they wouldn't act any differently.

Look at McMahon. He's doing the same thing, and he's just a DMN blogger.

And speaking of Timmy's blog, he said Wade was defensive. Yes, he was. That's how most people react when they're being attacked.

I don't think anyone in this town cares about the football side of it. Football is just a backdrop for the soap opera all these guys want to create.

I dont include Archer in that group with scruggs, hansen and watkins.

and mcmahons blog is not very good. He is just a tabloid guy like scruggs and dennis and hansen.

Steve Dennis kills me because I always watch cbs11 and he is force fed to me with laufenberg. It drives me crazy.

All of them are galloways little buddies and have taken on his personality. Nearly every person that has come into contact with Galloway now reports like him. Negative, negative negative. There is always something to gripe about and when there isnt just make it up.

Opening Press Conference
Posted by CBS11
Jerry and Wade's opening press conference began at 6:32pm CDT with Media Relations man Rich Dalrymple laying down the media laws.

Jerry's opening statement came at 6:34pm CDT with Dalrymple calling a ceasefire at precisely 7:20pm CDT. So, total running time for the big show was 48 minutes.

Jerry started by thanking the good folks of "Oxnerd" and sounded elated that Oxnerd has not prospered much lately. (The planned development that would have precluded the Cowboys from having camp at the practice fields never took off).

Jerry calls the next 12 months the most exciting and intriguing times in Cowboys history.

He and Stephen Jones say an announcement will come tomorrow on Terry Glenn.

Wade interrupted a query from our Steve Dennis, saying he was misquoted about his expectations for the team on Monday ("Get your ring finger ready"). Steve and Wade seemed to reach an accord when Steve re-phrased the question to say that Wade said he wanted to win the Super Bowl.

Jerry says the team has more talent than ever before in the secondary.

As is his habit, Wade was quick to point out he's rarely been with a losing team--only 4 times in the last 19 years.

We also heard a stunning revelation, "This isn't last year's team. This is this year's team."

You don't get stunning stuff like that anywhere else!

For more on the "number one watched team in sports" tune in to CBS-11 and TXA-21. We're "Live in Oxnerd" throughout camp. First practice is Friday afternoon.

Camp Update
Posted by CBS11
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that he has spoken with Terry Glenn's agent and expects to have an announcement about the future of the disgruntled receiver soon.

Glenn did not travel with the team to Oxnard, CA and his unhappy about his playing status and how he expected to be financially compensated this season.

First round pick Felix Jones and second round pick Mike Jenkins are the only two draft picks that have not yet signed. Stephen Jones said during this evening's opening day press conference that he does not expect there to be an extended hold out by either of the top two picks.

The Cowboys did sign three draft picks today. Second round pick Martellus Bennett, fourth round pick Tashard Choice and sixth round pick Erik Walden.

No Predictions
Posted by CBS11
Jerry Jones and Wade Phillips refused to make any predictions about the upcoming Cowboys season during their opening day press conference at Cowboys Training Camp in Oxnard, California.

Jones did say, "We have high expectations," and added that the Cowboys could be a better team than last years 13 and 3 squad. Phillips added that he "expects a lot" and feels good about the "all-stars" on the Cowboys coaching staff and among the players.

Seriously, are we commenting on someone's pronunciation? From the future let's just say, Jerry said, "I *smack* want to uhhh *SMACK* thank the good folks of *smack* uhhh Oxnerd."

Looks like some members of the media, and to a much smaller extent, Wade, had some big sticks up their butt.
