RELEASED Cowboys release Joe Milton; added to PS

Howell was much better than Milton during camp practice according to all reporters' accounts.

And if you use a discerning eye, Howell was better than Milton in the games, albeit slightly.

Howell is the only choice here if you're looking at this through the eyes of a true backup if Dak has to miss a few games.

This season is about now.

Plus, Milton is older than Howell, so it's not like he has years to develop and take over when he's 25. He's already 26.
This is key, because it was with starters at times, using starting concepts.

It seems Joe doesn’t get it between the ears still.

Jerry throws draft picks around like they're nothing.
I mean I get it. I know people get upset about it but I personally don't mind it. Kick the tires. Chances are the picks will be busts anyway. You got Milton for a 5th and you got back a 6th. That's nothing. Its the 2nd rounders they waste that is upsetting.

i got to tell you, this one is a big head scratcher...i get the inconsistency in the last game but his touch looked so much better and he had come so far, why release him? There had to be other guys that would have been better to release right?
Makes little sense

It's the Jones family way. They are kids at the grown up's table in this league regarding front offices. The Eagles front office has ran circles around them starting at the turn of the century. Heck, even the Giants front office put together a real good team for about a decade stretch.

And that's only listing our own division teams.
Jerry didn't cut him. Shotty, Adams, and McClay did.

His inconsistency got him in the end. If he had put together a good performance against New Orleans he’d have won the job. But he didn’t. Talented player but Howell is more reliable.
Exactly. The short pass that sailed 10 yards above the WRs head sealed his fate, along with Sam looking good in that game.

THis team has no intent on drafting a QB next year unless its late. And at that point is he really anything more than Howell or MIlton or Rush or any of these other guys? Sure there's a chance he's Dak pt. 2...but he's more than likely Stephen McGee or Mike White pt 2.
Drafting a quarterback next offseason is too early to tell. If the gambling kid is there at our pick I bet the Cowboys would consider him.

Per ESPN

"According to a source, the Cowboys did have some trade conversations regarding Milton prior to the cut down to the 53-man roster on Sunday. If Milton clears waivers, he could be brought back to the practice squad, but it's not clear if the Cowboys will bring him back."

"If the Cowboys released Howell, they would still be on the hook for his $2 million base salary, and if he would have been brought back to the practice squad, that money would have counted in addition to his guaranteed money.

One edge for Howell was experience. He has 18 career starts (all with Washington in 2022 and '23). Milton has played in five games in two years with no starts."

Thing is. Howell rushed for more yards in preseason than Joe did.

Apparently Joe’s athleticism doesn’t show up when the lights come on.
He used his athleticism on the few plays he wasn't delivering the ball downfield. Also getting first downs & TD's with the keepers.

Criticize all ya want but lets not pretend he wasn't the best athlete at the position by a significant margin.

By all accounts howell dinked and dunked the entire training camp. He finally started 'airing it out' with the 3rd stringers in the final preseason game.

This is called swinging for the infield.

The release is best for his career tbh. He was not going to leap Dak anytime soon. This gives him the chance to compete for a starting job elsewhere. Wish him the best.

Broaddus says we went late at running back to make sure we had a third quarterback and a six wide receiver-, now he says what the hell is going on!
105.3 the FAN now !
Also on the Audacy app

I'd be shocked if they didn't try to trade him for something, anything

no takers, then there might be a team willing to take a flyer on him, but if not, PS is good

The potential is there. No need to rush it.

Jerry didn't cut him. Shotty, Adams, and McClay did.
This... I'm hoping we are in a culture shift where coaches are trusted more and given more freedom to make personnel decisions.

we'll see how it goes.

Caelon Carson - terrible nothing more than a camp body.
