Cowboys rumored to not inform Mike McCarthy before making the trade for Trey Lance

The trade seemed to go down pretty quickly.

Jerry Jones said he didn't want San Fran to hang up the phone, he wanted to agree to the trade right away. The team had been looking to add a developmental QB the last two drafts and it had just never lined up.

Mike McCarthy know has his developmental quarterback.

In other words, Mike McCarthy had no idea Jerry would seek a trade at the umpteenth late hour which caught McCarthy unexpectedly and now having to make roster changes to create a spot for a forced player who needs years of grooming.

So basically he said yes I think Lance would be a benefit to the team and Jerry and Stephen went and did the trade negotiations.

How is that not standard business practice? Or do we all think coaches sit back and negotiate trades?
It’s only an issue here in our forum and, to a lesser degree, anyone else looking for clickbait

The problem with the timing is there isn't much time to develop your 3rd string QB during the regular season. He'll be running the scout team.

But he's under contract for two years and there's a fifth year option available. He just isn't going to do much this year, unless it's an emergency.

He was involved in the evaluation. Why would he be evaluating a player randomly? What Mike was saying was that the business end of the deal was not something he had anything to do with.

Read the words from the coach and stop swallowing the narrative of the headline.

Privately McCarthy is probably giddy about the chance to work with a QB with a lot of potential, and hopes to be around to see what happens.

Let's pray there's no emergency. I'm happy with the trade but if Trey sees the field in any meaningful way then the season has gone off the rails. Looking forward to seeing him in next year's preseason or hopefully the last game of the year when we have playoffs locked up.

Mike McCarthy didn't sound so giddy right before Saturday's game against the Raiders. He was totally caught off guard.

Jerry saw an opportunity and took it. Lance trade was a lottery ticket and a way to upgrade the quarterback room with raw talent. MM not being told about the trade should not be a big deal.
He was told. He was consulted. Once it was “GM time”, Jerry did what he did.

I doubt Shanahan was consulted at that stage either.

People just want to catastrophize

I dont care what a media flunky scared to lose access to the team nor a whipped emasculated head coach has to say. The head coach shouldn't find out on Twitter.
Give me a break Risen. Were you in the room?

Why are you always stirring up mess? For likes?

That's what I'm thinking. Why would he be mad about this? Jerry is handing him a guy that has a very high ceiling and is very raw. McCarthy can become a legend if he develops this guy and wins super bowls with him. If it doesn't work out then everyone will blame Jerry, as usual, and McCarthy will be smiling with his Krispie Kremes.

You know McCarthy would love to develop a guy and win super bowls with him and shove it in Aaron Rodgers face.

I hate Jerry as much as the next guy, but honestly who cares, Jerry traded for a top five draft pick QB to replace Grier. Grier was never starting here. Neither Lance or Grier were playing this year.

Since when do GMs need to address the entire team before they make moves?

“Hey Dak is okay we trade for a QB? If you say no, we won’t do it out of respect for the zero Super Bowls we’ve gone to since 2016.”
