1. Grier had been up and down to that point when the trade was made.
2. They know how they graded Trey for the draft compared to what they think Grier's ceiling is.
3. I'm sure Mike had say in whether he wanted to keep Rush or Grier. They announced that move later, so clearly Grier was the 3rd QB.
4. If Grier would have seen the field this year for any significant amount of time that means your season is over. Better to play the guy with a higher ceiling.
5. Mike wants to be in the business of developing QBs. If you aren't replacing your starter than that means spot 2 and 3 are a revolving door. Philosophically there was agreement before the move happened.
6. As I said before, Jerry pointed out needing to make the deal before the SF people got off the phone and talked to someone else. That's how deals get made, so the idea that there was time to go talk to everybody isn't real life.
That draft grade was from 2 years ago. Guaranteed, Mike McCarthy didn't feel the same way about Lance 2+ years later, especially after seeming so surprised and caught off guard pre-game this past Saturday night.

I hate Jerry as much as the next guy, but honestly who cares, Jerry traded for a top five draft pick QB to replace Grier. Grier was never starting here. Neither Lance or Grier were playing this year.

Since when do GMs need to address the entire team before they make moves?

“Hey Dak is okay we trade for a QB? If you say no, we won’t do it out of respect for the zero Super Bowls we’ve gone to since 2016.”
This is a great post and spot on. Good job.

I dont care what a media flunky scared to lose access to the team nor a whipped emasculated head coach has to say. The head coach shouldn't find out on Twitter.
Yep,
Im sure the other 31 NFL GMs usually trade for QBs just like this.

The no big deal of Jerry being Jerry acceptance by the fanbase is telling.
LOL

Dak first fanatics are clearly butt-hurt and scared by the Lance trade.

It’s sad……yet comical to watch!

What’s the drama? I mean I’m no fan of Jerry but I don’t see the wrong here. Jerry made an investment for the future of the franchise at a low risk.

I feel fans are blowing this out of proportion. Basically Jerry bought a lottery ticket may or may not hit the jackpot and we won’t know for a season or two. If it blows we are in good shape, if it doesn’t then try another lottery ticket. Why would McCarthy be mad Jerry is trying to upgrade the roster?

The fans that are taking this as a threat to Dak try and keep some perspective here. Dak is entering his 8th season. Most QBs don’t play 15-20 years like Brady and Rodgers. We’re looking at maybe 4-6 good seasons if we’re lucky. And that’s being generous. Whether you love Dak or hate him this is the time to start pondering a plan for the future. Dak might only play a couple more seasons, maybe less. Dak’s body can fail him, he could up and retire like Luck did, he could have another horrible injury. So right now Dak is our best chance to win but I’m really happy and relieved that for the time in a long time our FO is getting aggressive with premeditated plans of life after Dak. We didn’t do that with Aikman and it was bad. We did it with Romo and it worked out well. Now we’re doing at again and it’s the best thing to do.

It’s because we have nothing better to do.

How pathetic is it that our own HC is barely involved in any team operations? He’s basically a teenage girl team manager on a high school team.

Whatever. Every year it’s some other crazy spiel. You don’t hear this kind of stuff happening to other teams besides the bottom of the barrel teams like the Commanders
You haven’t been paying attention. This happens everywhere. We are not special snowflakes

No, as I said, the Jerry interview, if I remember correctly, he stated it explicitly that he didn’t consult MM or Dak. But he did state they looked at him in the draft and liked and basically wanted him. If Mike is being honest about evaluating him and Jerry, if my recollection of the interview is correct, is as well, that’s the only logical possibility. Otherwise, one of them is lying.
You’re recollection may be faulty

There are a lot of feelings going around here to replace QB3. The likelihood of Grier or Lance doing anything in this league is low, but it is hard to argue that Lance doesn't have a higher ceiling than Grier. People need to stop living in the past. Very few coaches get to run the whole show and fewer are successful at it. Jimmy had a good run, but he wasn't able to replicate that in Miami.

My complaint about Jerry is that he is still trying to win a super bowl by getting the most talented rather than deepest roster, and doing so with high risk reward players. For all the moves Jerry makes Lance is a low risk high reward player. If he made more of these moves we might have gotten to the NFCC by now instead of falling apart because our backups are trash.

He was involved in the evaluation, which means the draft evaluation 2 seasons ago. I still don't have an issue with it. They have gone on record as saying they should be in the business of developing QBs -- Mike has said that, not just Jerry -- and Jerry clearly said he didn't want to give SF a chance to get off the phone without a deal being made.

Jerry is correct on this -- if you want the deal, get it done before they have a chance to talk to anyone else. No time to talk to everybody beforehand, and as implied before they haven't talked about wanting QB talent philosophically for a while and they knew Mike's opinion of Trey from his draft eval.

People always seem to want to make things into some kind keeping up with Kardashians drama, but it's pretty straightforward. You get an unexpected call from someone wanting to trade a 1st round QB for a 4th round pick -- you get the deal done right then and there.
So your saying they didnt go back in all this and have MM reevaluate or look again and give his opinion??

I doubt that.

Mike knew nothing about it , but so to not look bad he will now say he was involved.
There is no way he could say the truth.

I agree with every point you are making...

But after watching Trey Lance's recent 2 preseason game performances, after 2 years of being in the NFL, I honestly believe he was highly overrated and drastically overpicked. You see such supposed talent, but where is it? I don't see it. Neither did the ex-NFL QB who does QB video breakdowns for a living, and neither did Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers, hence why they were forced to swallow their pride, admit they made a big mistake, drop Lance to 3rd string and eventually trade him away. They wanted no more of him. This coming from one of the top 3-4 teams in the NFL in recent years. That's my concern. It would be great if Trey Lance could be coached up these next few years into a serviceable starter quality type of QB, but after 2 years of being in the NFL, he makes rookie Dak Prescott of 2016 look like a Hall Of Famer.
